Design and construction of a Cherenkov imager for charge measurement of nuclear cosmic rays
A proximity focusing Cherenkov imager called CHERCAM, has been built for the
charge measurement of nuclear cosmic rays with the CREAM instrument. It
consists of a silica aerogel radiator plane across from a detector plane
equipped with 1,600 1" diameter photomultipliers. The two planes are separated
by a ring expansion gap. The Cherenkov light yield is proportional to the
charge squared of the incident particle. The expected relative light collection
accuracy is in the few percents range. It leads to an expected single element
separation over the range of nuclear charge Z of main interest 1 < Z < 26.
CHERCAM is designed to fly with the CREAM balloon experiment. The design of the
instrument and the implemented technical solutions allowing its safe operation
in high altitude conditions (radiations, low pressure, cold) are presented.Comment: 24 pages, 19 figure
IR Thermometer with Automatic Emissivity Correction
The paper describes the design and implementation of an infrared (IR) thermometer with automatic emissivity correction. The temperature measurement is carried out by the simple digital thermopile sensor MLX90614. The emissivity correction is based on benefits of diffuse reflecting materials and it uses an IR laser diode in conjunction with a selective amplifier. Moreover, the paper includes the design of the control interface with a graphics LCD. Furthermore, this paper describes the power supply unit with a Li-ion cell controlled by basic integrated circuits
Capacitor Mismatch Calibration Technique to Improve the SFDR of 14-Bit SAR ADC
This paper presents mismatch calibration technique to improve the SFDR in a 14-bit successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for wearable electronics application. Behavioral Monte-Carlo simulations are applied to demonstrate the effect of the proposed method where no complex digital calibration algorithm or auxiliary calibration DAC needed. Simulation results show that with a mismatch error typical of modern technology, the SFDR is enhanced by more than 20 dB with the proposed technique for a 14-bit SAR ADC
