Internet of things enabled parking management system using long range wide area network for smart city
As the Internet of Things (IoT) evolves, it paves the way for vital smart city applications, with the Smart Parking Management System (SPMS) standing as a prime example. This research introduces a novel IoT-driven SPMS that leverages Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology, termed as IoT-SPMS-LoRaWAN, to surmount typical restrictions related to communication range, energy usage, and implementation cost seen in traditional systems. IoT-SPMS-LoRaWAN features intelligent sensing nodes that incorporate an Arduino UNO microcontroller and two sensorsâa triaxial magnetic sensor and a waterproof ultrasonic sensor. These components collaboratively detect vehicle occupancy and transmit this data to the server via a LoRaWAN gateway. Notably, the integration of LoRa technology enables extensive network coverage and energy efficiency. Users are provided with real-time updates on parking availability via the accessible AllThingsTalk Maker graphical user interface. Additionally, the system operates independently, sustained by a solar-powered rechargeable battery. Practical testing of IoT-SPMS-LoRaWAN under various scenarios validates its merits in terms of functionality, ease of use, reliable data transmission, and precision. Its urban implementation is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, optimize parking utilization, and elevate awareness about available parking spaces among users. Device-to-device based path selection for post disaster communication using hybrid intelligence
Public safety network communication methods are concurrence with emerging networks to provide enhanced strategies and services for catastrophe management. If the cellular network is damaged after a calamity, a new-generation network like the internet of things (IoT) is ready to assure network access. In this paper, we suggested a framework of hybrid intelligence to find and re-connect the isolated nodes to the functional area to save life. We look at a situation in which the devices in the hazard region can constantly monitor the radio environment to self-detect the occurrence of a disaster, switch to the device-to-device (D2D) communication mode, and establish a vital connection. The oscillating spider monkey optimization (OSMO) approach forms clusters of the devices in the disaster area to improve network efficiency. The devices in the secluded area use the cluster heads as relay nodes to the operational site. An oscillating particle swarm optimization (OPSO) with a priority-based path encoding technique is used for path discovery. The suggested approach improves the energy efficiency of the network by selecting a routing path based on the remaining energy of the device, channel quality, and hop count, thus increasing network stability and packet delivery
Deep generative models for network data synthesis and monitoring
Measurement and monitoring are fundamental tasks in all networks, enabling the down-stream management and optimization of the network.
Although networks inherently
have abundant amounts of monitoring data, its access and effective measurement is
another story. The challenges exist in many aspects. First, the inaccessibility of network monitoring data for external users, and it is hard to provide a high-fidelity dataset
without leaking commercial sensitive information. Second, it could be very expensive
to carry out effective data collection to cover a large-scale network system, considering the size of network growing, i.e., cell number of radio network and the number of
flows in the Internet Service Provider (ISP) network. Third, it is difficult to ensure fidelity and efficiency simultaneously in network monitoring, as the available resources
in the network element that can be applied to support the measurement function are
too limited to implement sophisticated mechanisms. Finally, understanding and explaining the behavior of the network becomes challenging due to its size and complex
structure. Various emerging optimization-based solutions (e.g., compressive sensing)
or data-driven solutions (e.g. deep learning) have been proposed for the aforementioned challenges. However, the fidelity and efficiency of existing methods cannot yet
meet the current network requirements.
The contributions made in this thesis significantly advance the state of the art in
the domain of network measurement and monitoring techniques. Overall, we leverage
cutting-edge machine learning technology, deep generative modeling, throughout the
entire thesis. First, we design and realize APPSHOT , an efficient city-scale network
traffic sharing with a conditional generative model, which only requires open-source
contextual data during inference (e.g., land use information and population distribution). Second, we develop an efficient drive testing system â GENDT, based on generative model, which combines graph neural networks, conditional generation, and quantified model uncertainty to enhance the efficiency of mobile drive testing. Third, we
design and implement DISTILGAN, a high-fidelity, efficient, versatile, and real-time
network telemetry system with latent GANs and spectral-temporal networks. Finally,
we propose SPOTLIGHT , an accurate, explainable, and efficient anomaly detection system of the Open RAN (Radio Access Network) system. The lessons learned through
this research are summarized, and interesting topics are discussed for future work in
this domain. All proposed solutions have been evaluated with real-world datasets and
applied to support different applications in real systems
Design and Evaluation of a Hardware System for Online Signal Processing within Mobile Brain-Computer Interfaces
Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) sind innovative Systeme, die eine direkte Kommunikation zwischen dem Gehirn und externen GerĂ€ten ermöglichen. Diese Schnittstellen haben sich zu einer transformativen Lösung nicht nur fĂŒr Menschen mit neurologischen Verletzungen entwickelt, sondern auch fĂŒr ein breiteres Spektrum von Menschen, das sowohl medizinische als auch nicht-medizinische Anwendungen umfasst. In der Vergangenheit hat die Herausforderung, dass neurologische Verletzungen nach einer anfĂ€nglichen Erholungsphase statisch bleiben, die Forscher dazu veranlasst, innovative Wege zu beschreiten. Seit den 1970er Jahren stehen BCIs an vorderster Front dieser BemĂŒhungen. Mit den Fortschritten in der Forschung haben sich die BCI-Anwendungen erweitert und zeigen ein groĂes Potenzial fĂŒr eine Vielzahl von Anwendungen, auch fĂŒr weniger stark eingeschrĂ€nkte (zum Beispiel im Kontext von Hörelektronik) sowie völlig gesunde Menschen (zum Beispiel in der Unterhaltungsindustrie). Die Zukunft der BCI-Forschung hĂ€ngt jedoch auch von der VerfĂŒgbarkeit zuverlĂ€ssiger BCI-Hardware ab, die den Einsatz in der realen Welt gewĂ€hrleistet.
Das im Rahmen dieser Arbeit konzipierte und implementierte CereBridge-System stellt einen bedeutenden Fortschritt in der Brain-Computer-Interface-Technologie dar, da es die gesamte Hardware zur Erfassung und Verarbeitung von EEG-Signalen in ein mobiles System integriert. Die Architektur der Verarbeitungshardware basiert auf einem FPGA mit einem ARM Cortex-M3 innerhalb eines heterogenen ICs, was FlexibilitĂ€t und Effizienz bei der EEG-Signalverarbeitung gewĂ€hrleistet. Der modulare Aufbau des Systems, bestehend aus drei einzelnen Boards, gewĂ€hrleistet die Anpassbarkeit an unterschiedliche Anforderungen. Das komplette System wird an der Kopfhaut befestigt, kann autonom arbeiten, benötigt keine externe Interaktion und wiegt einschlieĂlich der 16-Kanal-EEG-Sensoren nur ca. 56 g. Der Fokus liegt auf voller MobilitĂ€t.
Das vorgeschlagene anpassbare Datenflusskonzept erleichtert die Untersuchung und nahtlose Integration von Algorithmen und erhöht die FlexibilitĂ€t des Systems. Dies wird auch durch die Möglichkeit unterstrichen, verschiedene Algorithmen auf EEG-Daten anzuwenden, um unterschiedliche Anwendungsziele zu erreichen. High-Level Synthesis (HLS) wurde verwendet, um die Algorithmen auf das FPGA zu portieren, was den Algorithmenentwicklungsprozess beschleunigt und eine schnelle Implementierung von Algorithmusvarianten ermöglicht. Evaluierungen haben gezeigt, dass das CereBridge-System in der Lage ist, die gesamte Signalverarbeitungskette zu integrieren, die fĂŒr verschiedene BCI-Anwendungen erforderlich ist. DarĂŒber hinaus kann es mit einer Batterie von mehr als 31 Stunden Dauerbetrieb betrieben werden, was es zu einer praktikablen Lösung fĂŒr mobile Langzeit-EEG-Aufzeichnungen und reale BCI-Studien macht.
Im Vergleich zu bestehenden Forschungsplattformen bietet das CereBridge-System eine bisher unerreichte LeistungsfĂ€higkeit und Ausstattung fĂŒr ein mobiles BCI. Es erfĂŒllt nicht nur die relevanten Anforderungen an ein mobiles BCI-System, sondern ebnet auch den Weg fĂŒr eine schnelle Ăbertragung von Algorithmen aus dem Labor in reale Anwendungen. Im Wesentlichen liefert diese Arbeit einen umfassenden Entwurf fĂŒr die Entwicklung und Implementierung eines hochmodernen mobilen EEG-basierten BCI-Systems und setzt damit einen neuen Standard fĂŒr BCI-Hardware, die in der Praxis eingesetzt werden kann.Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are innovative systems that enable direct communication between the brain and external devices. These interfaces have emerged as a transformative solution not only for individuals with neurological injuries, but also for a broader range of individuals, encompassing both medical and non-medical applications. Historically, the challenge of neurological injury being static after an initial recovery phase has driven researchers to explore innovative avenues. Since the 1970s, BCIs have been at one forefront of these efforts. As research has progressed, BCI applications have expanded, showing potential in a wide range of applications, including those for less severely disabled (e.g. in the context of hearing aids) and completely healthy individuals (e.g. entertainment industry). However, the future of BCI research also depends on the availability of reliable BCI hardware to ensure real-world application.
The CereBridge system designed and implemented in this work represents a significant leap forward in brain-computer interface technology by integrating all EEG signal acquisition and processing hardware into a mobile system. The processing hardware architecture is centered around an FPGA with an ARM Cortex-M3 within a heterogeneous IC, ensuring flexibility and efficiency in EEG signal processing. The modular design of the system, consisting of three individual boards, ensures adaptability to different requirements. With a focus on full mobility, the complete system is mounted on the scalp, can operate autonomously, requires no external interaction, and weighs approximately 56g, including 16 channel EEG sensors.
The proposed customizable dataflow concept facilitates the exploration and seamless integration of algorithms, increasing the flexibility of the system. This is further underscored by the ability to apply different algorithms to recorded EEG data to meet different application goals. High-Level Synthesis (HLS) was used to port algorithms to the FPGA, accelerating the algorithm development process and facilitating rapid implementation of algorithm variants. Evaluations have shown that the CereBridge system is capable of integrating the complete signal processing chain required for various BCI applications. Furthermore, it can operate continuously for more than 31 hours with a 1800mAh battery, making it a viable solution for long-term mobile EEG recording and real-world BCI studies.
Compared to existing research platforms, the CereBridge system offers unprecedented performance and features for a mobile BCI. It not only meets the relevant requirements for a mobile BCI system, but also paves the way for the rapid transition of algorithms from the laboratory to real-world applications. In essence, this work provides a comprehensive blueprint for the development and implementation of a state-of-the-art mobile EEG-based BCI system, setting a new benchmark in BCI hardware for real-world applicability
Neuromodulatory effects on early visual signal processing
Understanding how the brain processes information and generates simple to complex behavior constitutes one of the core objectives in systems neuroscience. However, when studying different neural circuits, their dynamics and interactions researchers often assume fixed connectivity, overlooking a crucial factor - the effect of neuromodulators. Neuromodulators can modulate circuit activity depending on several aspects, such as different brain states or sensory contexts. Therefore, considering the modulatory effects of neuromodulators on the functionality of neural circuits is an indispensable step towards a more complete picture of the brainâs ability to process information. Generally, this issue affects all neural systems; hence this thesis tries to address this with an experimental and computational approach to resolve neuromodulatory effects on cell type-level in a well-define system, the mouse retina. In the first study, we established and applied a machine-learning-based classification algorithm to identify individual functional retinal ganglion cell types, which enabled detailed cell type-resolved analyses. We applied the classifier to newly acquired data of light-evoked retinal ganglion cell responses and successfully identified their functional types. Here, the cell type-resolved analysis revealed that a particular principle of efficient coding applies to all types in a similar way. In a second study, we focused on the issue of inter-experimental variability that can occur during the process of pooling datasets. As a result, further downstream analyses may be complicated by the subtle variations between the individual datasets. To tackle this, we proposed a theoretical framework based on an adversarial autoencoder with the objective to remove inter-experimental variability from the pooled dataset, while preserving the underlying biological signal of interest. In the last study of this thesis, we investigated the functional effects of the neuromodulator nitric oxide on the retinal output signal. To this end, we used our previously developed retinal ganglion cell type classifier to unravel type-specific effects and established a paired recording protocol to account for type-specific time-dependent effects. We found that certain
retinal ganglion cell types showed adaptational type-specific changes and that nitric oxide had a distinct modulation of a particular group of retinal ganglion cells.
In summary, I first present several experimental and computational methods that allow to
study functional neuromodulatory effects on the retinal output signal in a cell type-resolved manner and, second, use these tools to demonstrate their feasibility to study the neuromodulator nitric oxide
Authentication enhancement in command and control networks: (a study in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks)
Intelligent transportation systems contribute to improved traffic safety by facilitating real time communication between vehicles. By using wireless channels for communication, vehicular networks are susceptible to a wide range of attacks, such as impersonation, modification, and replay. In this context, securing data exchange between intercommunicating terminals, e.g., vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, constitutes a technological challenge that needs to be addressed. Hence, message authentication is crucial to safeguard vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) from malicious attacks. The current state-of-the-art for authentication in VANETs relies on conventional cryptographic primitives, introducing significant computation and communication overheads. In this challenging scenario, physical (PHY)-layer authentication has gained popularity, which involves leveraging the inherent characteristics of wireless channels and the hardware imperfections to discriminate between wireless devices. However, PHY-layerbased authentication cannot be an alternative to crypto-based methods as the initial legitimacy detection must be conducted using cryptographic methods to extract the communicating terminal secret features. Nevertheless, it can be a promising complementary solution for the reauthentication problem in VANETs, introducing what is known as âcross-layer authentication.â This thesis focuses on designing efficient cross-layer authentication schemes for VANETs, reducing the communication and computation overheads associated with transmitting and verifying a crypto-based signature for each transmission. The following provides an overview of the proposed methodologies employed in various contributions presented in this thesis.
1. The first cross-layer authentication scheme: A four-step process represents this approach: initial crypto-based authentication, shared key extraction, re-authentication via a PHY challenge-response algorithm, and adaptive adjustments based on channel conditions. Simulation results validate its efficacy, especially in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios while proving its resilience against active and passive attacks.
2. The second cross-layer authentication scheme: Leveraging the spatially and temporally correlated wireless channel features, this scheme extracts high entropy shared keys that can be used to create dynamic PHY-layer signatures for authentication. A 3-Dimensional (3D) scattering Doppler emulator is designed to investigate the schemeâs performance at different speeds of a moving vehicle and SNRs. Theoretical and hardware implementation analyses prove the schemeâs capability to support high detection probability for an acceptable false alarm value †0.1 at SNR â„ 0 dB and speed †45 m/s.
3. The third proposal: Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) integration for improved authentication: Focusing on enhancing PHY-layer re-authentication, this proposal explores integrating RIS technology to improve SNR directed at designated vehicles. Theoretical analysis and practical implementation of the proposed scheme are conducted using a 1-bit RIS, consisting of 64 Ă 64 reflective units. Experimental results show a significant improvement in the Pd, increasing from 0.82 to 0.96 at SNR = â 6 dB for multicarrier communications.
4. The fourth proposal: RIS-enhanced vehicular communication security: Tailored for challenging SNR in non-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios, this proposal optimises key extraction and defends against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks through selective signal strengthening. Hardware implementation studies prove its effectiveness, showcasing improved key extraction performance and resilience against potential threats.
5. The fifth cross-layer authentication scheme: Integrating PKI-based initial legitimacy detection and blockchain-based reconciliation techniques, this scheme ensures secure data exchange. Rigorous security analyses and performance evaluations using network simulators and computation metrics showcase its effectiveness, ensuring its resistance against common attacks and time efficiency in message verification.
6. The final proposal: Group key distribution: Employing smart contract-based blockchain technology alongside PKI-based authentication, this proposal distributes group session keys securely. Its lightweight symmetric key cryptography-based method maintains privacy in VANETs, validated via Ethereumâs main network (MainNet) and comprehensive computation and communication evaluations.
The analysis shows that the proposed methods yield a noteworthy reduction, approximately ranging from 70% to 99%, in both computation and communication overheads, as compared to the conventional approaches. This reduction pertains to the verification and transmission of 1000 messages in total
The Effects of Weight Quantization on Online Federated Learning for the IoT: A Case Study
Many weight quantization approaches were explored to save the communication bandwidth between the clients and the server in federated learning using high-end computing machines. However, there is a lack of weight quantization research for online federated learning using TinyML devices which are restricted by the mini-batch size, the neural network size, and the communication method due to their severe hardware resource constraints and power budgets. We name Tiny Online Federated Learning (TinyOFL) for online federated learning using TinyML devices in the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper performs a comprehensive analysis of the effects of weight quantization in TinyOFL in terms of accuracy, stability, overfitting, communication efficiency, energy consumption, and delivery time, and extracts practical guidelines on how to apply the weight quantization to TinyOFL. Our analysis is supported by a TinyOFL case study with three Arduino Portenta H7 boards running federated learning clients for a keyword spotting task. Our findings include that in TinyOFL, a more aggressive weight quantization can be allowed than in online learning without FL, without affecting the accuracy thanks to TinyOFLâs quasi-batch training property. For example, using 7-bit weights achieved the equivalent accuracy to 32-bit floating point weights, while saving communication bandwidth by 4.6Ă . Overfitting by increasing network width rarely occurs in TinyOFL, but may occur if strong weight quantization is applied. The experiments also showed that there is a design space for TinyOFL applications by compensating for the accuracy loss due to weight quantization with an increase of the neural network size
Optimization of Beyond 5G Network Slicing for Smart City Applications
Transitioning from the current fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology, the advent of beyond 5G (B5G) signifies a pivotal stride toward sixth generation (6G) communication technology. B5G, at its essence, harnesses end-to-end (E2E) network slicing (NS) technology, enabling the simultaneous accommodation of multiple logical networks with distinct performance requirements on a shared physical infrastructure. At the forefront of this implementation lies the critical process of network slice design, a phase central to the realization of efficient smart city networks. This thesis assumes a key role in the network slicing life cycle, emphasizing the analysis and formulation of optimal procedures for configuring, customizing, and allocating E2E network slices. The focus extends to catering to the unique demands of smart city applications, encompassing critical areas such as emergency response, smart buildings, and video surveillance. By addressing the intricacies of network slice design, the study navigates through the complexities of tailoring slices to meet specific application needs, thereby contributing to the seamless integration of diverse services within the smart city framework. Addressing the core challenge of NS, which involves the allocation of virtual networks on the physical topology with optimal resource allocation, the thesis introduces a dual integer linear programming (ILP) optimization problem. This problem is formulated to jointly minimize the embedding cost and latency. However, given the NP-hard nature of this ILP, finding an efficient alternative becomes a significant hurdle. In response, this thesis introduces a novel heuristic approach the matroid-based modified greedy breadth-first search (MGBFS) algorithm. This pioneering algorithm leverages matroid properties to navigate the process of virtual network embedding and resource allocation. By introducing this novel heuristic approach, the research aims to provide near-optimal solutions, overcoming the computational complexities associated with the dual integer linear programming problem. The proposed MGBFS algorithm not only addresses the connectivity, cost, and latency constraints but also outperforms the benchmark model delivering solutions remarkably close to optimal. This innovative approach represents a substantial advancement in the optimization of smart city applications, promising heightened connectivity, efficiency, and resource utilization within the evolving landscape of B5G-enabled communication technology
Mitigating the Event and Effect of Energy Holes in Multi-hop Wireless Sensor Networks Using an Ultra-Low Power Wake-up Receiver and an Energy Scheduling Technique
This research work presents an algorithm for extending network lifetime in multi-hop wireless sensor networks (WSN). WSNs face energy gap issues around sink nodes due to the transmission of large amounts of data through nearby sensor nodes. The limited power supply to the nodes limits the lifetime of the network, which makes energy efficiency crucial. Multi-hop communication has been proposed as an efficient strategy, but its power consumption remains a research challenge. In this study, an algorithm is developed to mitigate energy holes around the sink nodes by using a modified ultra-low-power wake-up receiver and an energy scheduling technique. Efficient power scheduling reduces the power consumption of the relay node, and when the residual power of the sensor node falls below a defined threshold, the power emitters charge the nodes to eliminate energy-hole problems. The modified wake-up receiver improves sensor sensitivity while staying within the micro-power budget. This study's simulations showed that the developed RF energy harvesting algorithm outperformed previous work, achieving a 30% improvement in average charged energy (AEC), a 0.41% improvement in average energy (AEH), an 8.39% improvement in the number of energy transmitters, an 8.59% improvement in throughput, and a 0.19 decrease in outage probability compared to the existing network lifetime enhancement of multi-hop wireless sensor networks by RF Energy Harvesting algorithm. Overall, the enhanced power efficiency technique significantly improves the performance of WSNs
