    Transforming floundering into success

    We show how logic programs with "delays" can be transformed to programs without delays in a way which preserves information concerning floundering (also known as deadlock). This allows a declarative (model-theoretic), bottom-up or goal independent approach to be used for analysis and debugging of properties related to floundering. We rely on some previously introduced restrictions on delay primitives and a key observation which allows properties such as groundness to be analysed by approximating the (ground) success set.     Correctness and completeness of logic programs

    We discuss proving correctness and completeness of definite clause logic programs. We propose a method for proving completeness, while for proving correctness we employ a method which should be well known but is often neglected. Also, we show how to prove completeness and correctness in the presence of SLD-tree pruning, and point out that approximate specifications simplify specifications and proofs. We compare the proof methods to declarative diagnosis (algorithmic debugging), showing that approximate specifications eliminate a major drawback of the latter.     Using global analysis, partial specifications, and an extensible assertion language for program validation and debugging

    We discuss a framework for the application of abstract interpretation as an aid during program development, rather than in the more traditional application of program optimization. Program validation and detection of errors is first performed statically by comparing (partial) specifications written in terms of assertions against information obtained from (global) static analysis of the program. The results of this process are expressed in the user assertion language. Assertions (or parts of assertions) which cannot be checked statically are translated into run-time tests. The framework allows the use of assertions to be optional. It also allows using very general properties in assertions, beyond the predefined set understandable by the static analyzer and including properties defined by user programs. We also report briefly on an implementation of the framework. The resulting tool generates and checks assertions for Prolog, CLP(R), and CHIP/CLP(fd) programs, and integrates compile-time and run-time checking in a uniform way. The tool allows using properties such as types, modes, non-failure, determinacy, and computational cost, and can treat modules separately, performing incremental analysis

    An assertion language for constraint logic programs

    In an advanced program development environment, such as that discussed in the introduction of this book, several tools may coexist which handle both the program and information on the program in different ways. Also, these tools may interact among themselves and with the user. Thus, the different tools and the user need some way to communicate. It is our design principie that such communication be performed in terms of assertions. Assertions are syntactic objects which allow expressing properties of programs. Several assertion languages have been used in the past in different contexts, mainly related to program debugging. In this chapter we propose a general language of assertions which is used in different tools for validation and debugging of constraint logic programs in the context of the DiSCiPl project. The assertion language proposed is parametric w.r.t. the particular constraint domain and properties of interest being used in each different tool. The language proposed is quite general in that it poses few restrictions on the kind of properties which may be expressed. We believe the assertion language we propose is of practical relevance and appropriate for the different uses required in the tools considered

    Metacognition in Undergraduate Chemistry Education: Instructor Perspectives And Students’ Use

    My dissertation research has been a quest to understand how to improve metacognition development in undergraduate chemistry education. The first step I took in this investigation was to speak with those with the largest influence on an undergraduate chemistry student’s education: the instructors. I interviewed seventeen postsecondary chemistry instructors on their thoughts of metacognition, its importance, their current practices for developing their students’ metacognition, and their suggestions for how to improve metacognition development in undergraduate chemistry education. After conducting a qualitative reflexive thematic analysis of the interview transcripts, I found that many of these instructors valued metacognition and believed it to be important for their students. Some of these instructors were already implementing metacognition development in their courses and had great suggestions for how to improve metacognition development in undergraduate chemistry education. I also found that some of these instructors had little to no knowledge of metacognition before my interview with them, and that with the many responsibilities they already had as lecturers, tenure-track, or tenured professors they felt overwhelmed by the idea of learning enough about metacognition themselves to be able to teach their students about it. After hearing these instructors’ perspectives I concluded that to improve metacognition development in undergraduate chemistry education, awareness and change needs to happen at a departmental level. I also concluded that activities developed with the intent of implicitly or covertly teaching students about metacognition could benefit students of instructors who do not have the time to gain training in educational psychology. The next step in my dissertation research was to develop an activity that could implicitly engage students’ metacognition, which could be easily implemented by those time-strapped instructors. To do this I conducted interviews with twenty-five undergraduate biochemistry students and asked them to solve two buffer problems while thinking aloud. Before they solved the second problem, I asked them questions about how a different student might be led astray in solving the problem. The intent of these questions was to covertly prompt students to think about their own thinking by asking them to think about an “unreflective” or “misguided” student’s thought process, and this idea was inspired by another study which asked students similar questions while they responded to a concept inventory. After qualitatively analyzing the transcripts by a codebook thematic analysis process, I found that the questions I asked did prompt students to be more metacognitive, specifically by prompting their metacognitive skills of monitoring and evaluating. From these results I concluded that these questions could be used as a “covert” activity to encourage students’ to employ their metacognition, and due to their format they can easily be incorporated into existing activities and assignments

    A Survey of Algorithmic Debugging

Shapiro in the context of logic programming. This survey shows how the initial ideas have been developed to become a widespread debugging schema ftting many diferent programming paradigms and with applications out of the program debugging feld. We describe the general framework and the main issues related to the implementations in diferent programming paradigms and discuss several proposed improvements and optimizations. We also review the main algorithmic debugger tools that have been implemented so far and compare their features.     Exploring metacognitive development in the context of peer assisted writing using on-line and off-line methods

    DEdPsy ThesisThe exploration of metacognition in the context of Peer Assisted Writing (PAW) is an under-researched area. This study aims to address this issue in one primary school. A PAW programme that included four pairs of pupils from a composite Primary 6/7 class was timetabled over five weeks. There were three sessions of approximately 45 minutes each week during which each pair of pupils jointly planned and wrote a story. The stories followed the school writing programme. Qualitative and quantitative analysis, collected using action research and case study design, is used to investigate how a PAW programme supports pupils’ metacognitive and writing development. The complex issues of metacognition are examined. On-line and off-line assessment methods tell us about metacognitive outcomes of PAW. The results show that the different assessment methods (Video Recording of the PAW sessions, Think Aloud when Prompted and Pupil View Templates) reveal a range of metacognitive outcomes that together help to complete a fuller picture of pupils’ thinking and learning abilities and social emotional well-being. The results evidenced that PAW fosters metacognition. Qualitative results suggested that writing is a complex, metacognitive process and it was necessary to extend the range of sub-components of information management. The results confirmed the views that development of knowledge of metacognition and regulation of metacognition are mutually dependent on each other and also that development of regulation of metacognition can take place in early primary school. Additionally, there was confirmation for research that proposed writing as ‘applied metacognition’. Quantitative analysis indicated that pupils engaged in PAW made substantial progress and that PAW particularly benefited pupils with weaker writing skills
