Purpose – The aim of the present study was to explore Malaysian hotel restaurants (MHRs) and their intention to adopt sustainability practices with the aim of improving their overall competitiveness and performance. In this case, a new model to assist MHRs in the application of sustainability practices was developed in order to assess the efforts through the implementation of sustainability practices. Design/methodology/approach – The mixed methods with quantitative dominant was designed for the present study. The first phase of fieldwork was performed in the form of a survey among the hotel managers of 3-5 star rated hotels in Malaysia which managed to collect a total of 169 responses. Next, the second phase involved the in-depth semi-structured interviews conducted with 10 informants for the purpose of conducting further discussion on the issues. Findings – Malaysian hotel restaurants (MHRs) sustainable model illustrated that attitude towards change, top management, employee connectedness, government law and regulations; stakeholders’ demand, compatibility, trialability and observability significantly influenced the intention to adopt sustainable practices. On the other hand, cost consideration, green supply chain, relative advantages and complexity were found to be insignificant. Meanwhile, government support and guidelines, by giving incentives, increasing public awareness, and providing expertise as a form of guide played a significant role in determining the success of sustainability practices. Originality/value – The present study contributed to the understanding of innovation concept as well as the sustainability adoption practices in Malaysian hotel restaurants (MHRs). In addition, the mixed methods research design contributed to the extension of the literature which managed to explore the predictors’ influences on the sustainability adoption in MHRs

Green practice has frequently been acknowledged as an essential and common concept, which businesses implement to achieve some business superiority over competitors. However, studies on environmental practices are seldom conducted in Nigeria. The objective of this paper is to examine the influence of perceived innovation characteristics on the adoption of green practices in the hotel. Samples were collected using proportionate stratified random sampling.Data were collected using 80 questionnaires from the 100 distributed, and then analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS).Founded on theory of diffusion, this study evaluated three measurements of perceived innovation characteristics influencing the likely adoption of green practices from the perspectives of general managers in the four and five star rated hotels in Kaduna. The study model proposes that hotel's intention to embrace green practices is influenced by the three dimensions of innovation characteristics: perceived compatibility, perceived complexity and the apparent relative advantage.A multiple regression performed indicates perceived compatibility and relative advantage relating positively to likelihood of adoption. The outcomes of this paper may offer valuable understandings of green practices. The findings of this study are practically useful for general managers when developing and implementing organizational innovative policies to ensure sustainable operations

The number of Indonesia people using internet have increased due to advances in information technology, and the activity of electronic commerce (E-Commerce) is increasingly growing. This is a huge potential market for businesses including for SMEs. However, there are only a few Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia which have adopted E-Commerce. In fact, they are one important part of the economy in Indonesia. On the other hand, technological advances have made the competition tougher for SMEs. To understand perspective of E-Commerce from SMEs side, this study aims to find out what are the factors that support SMEs to adopt E-Commerce and the effect of the adoption to SMEs’ performance. This research discusses the adoption of E-Commerce by Indonesia SMEs and performance improvement as the effect of the adoption. The problems in this research are elaborated into research questions, i.e. do compatibility, top management support, organizational readiness, perceived benefits and external drive have significant positive effect to E-Commerce adoption? And does the adoption have significant positive effect to company’s performance? The purpose of this research is to analyze factors that support E-Commerce adoption on Indonesia SMEs and to analyze whether the adoption improves the performance of the SMEs. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) Techniques is applied to analyze by using SmartPLS3. This technique enables researchers to test the relation between complex variables and to get an overall view of the whole model.peer-reviewe

    Get PDF
In this paper, we analyze the progress of tourism towards sustainability and innovation through a systematic literature review summarizing the last five years of research strictly focused on innovation and sustainability applied to tourism. This research comprises a range of theories, practices, methods, and results pursuing innovation and sustainability across different levels, stages, and drivers, and in many tourism contexts. Wide, in-depth, and structured analysis, evaluation, and examination (using the PRISMA and VOSviewer tools) of a final sample of 50 scholarly papers from 27 journals, published between 2017 and the first quarter of 2021, were undertaken. Current publications emphasize qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research methods, as well as statistical and econometric methods, such as descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. This study categorizes the four major topics identified, sustainability, innovation, sustainable development, and sustainable tourism, which comprised the contextual dimensions and relevant stages of the subject areas examined. This systematic literature review highlights advances and the significantly increasing overall number of papers over recent years. Currently, sustainability is in a more advanced state compared to innovation. The outcomes highlight that the indicators of sustainability and innovation still need further analysis within the tourism context. However, more concrete process indicators are needed for continuous improvement of the front-end of innovation and sustainable tourism. The results help in better understanding the sustainability and innovation process as applied to tourism. In particular, this study explores further direct linkages between sustainability and innovation and tourism, discussing and providing new future directions aligned with the closing remarks as well as a strategic agenda for future action post-COVID-19.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Using competing models to evaluate the role of environmental pressures in ecommerce adoption by small and medium sized travel agents in a developing country

    Get PDF
This study investigates the factors that influence e-commerce adoption in SME travel agents in a developing country. The research is based upon a questionnaire survey of travel agents in Egypt and employs advanced statistical techniques to test a conceptual framework that extends the technology acceptance model. Using competing models the study examines the relationship between e-commerce adoption, perceived benefits, perceived barriers and environmental pressures. The results indicate that environmental pressures significantly affect the perceived benefits and barriers of e-commerce adoption, in addition to having an indirect effect on adoption behaviour. Insights are provided into the nature of relationships between the key factors that determine e-commerce adoption and the extent to which they can be used to develop effective strategies for SME travel agent re-intermediation in the global travel market. Implications are identified for practice and government policy in relation to the use of e-commerce in SME travel businesses in developing countries

Purpose: With the rapid development and implementation of cutting-edge information technologies in tourism and hospitality, it is necessary to update the progress of technology use in the past 18 years and set up research agenda for future research. Adopting Information Systems (IS) as a reference discipline, this article aims to create a literature review of technology and tourism papers around the theme of use. Design/methodology/approach: Following the systematic literature review process of Aguinis et al. (2018), 314 papers were downloaded to determine how they applied the concept of technology use. Findings: Three themes about technology use emerged: types of processing, organisational use, and users. Among various types of technology processing, interactive and online are largely addressed in the tourism and hospitality literature. The organisational use theme explores how the competitive and strategic use of technology provides management support for organisations. There was a large amount of research focussed on direct users, such as individual characteristics, user attitudes, and user behaviour. The theories of TAM and UTAUT have been widely applied in these studies. Originality/value: This paper provides a review of key issues which has been discussed in tourism research in relation to technology use. By applying the scheme developed in the IS discipline, this study provides new insights into the development of technology in tourism. In addition, it also gives us the opportunity to suggest a research agenda by identifying research gaps and future research collaboration opportunities between these two fields

A study of the pass - through effects of exchange rates and international prices shocks on inflation in the Fiji Islands

    Get PDF
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the exchange rates, international prices, and the demand shocks on inflation in Fiji Island. The study covers the annual data from 1975 to 2010.The variables are transformed into changes/per cent and then Ordinary Least Squares methodology (OLS) is used. The appropriateness of the OLS assumptions is tested including the normality of the residuals, autocorrelations, heteroskedasticity and functional forms. The main findings are that the Fijian dollar depreciation increases, the international price shocks in the form of Australian consumer prices increase, the Keynesian demand shocks increase, and the devaluation events increase the consumer price inflation in Fiji. As a monetary policy instrument the flexibility of the exchange rate policy is indispensable for Fiji to absorb appropriately the international supply and price shocks. We have been able to include the international supply shocks, the domestic demand shocks, the exchange rates, and devaluation dummies in our model. Though we have used a simple OLS model, the originality of our study is the comprehensiveness of the theoretical variables in our model. This study will have an important implication for the small open economy of Fiji especially its exchange rate policy
