One-Class Classification: Taxonomy of Study and Review of Techniques
One-class classification (OCC) algorithms aim to build classification models
when the negative class is either absent, poorly sampled or not well defined.
This unique situation constrains the learning of efficient classifiers by
defining class boundary just with the knowledge of positive class. The OCC
problem has been considered and applied under many research themes, such as
outlier/novelty detection and concept learning. In this paper we present a
unified view of the general problem of OCC by presenting a taxonomy of study
for OCC problems, which is based on the availability of training data,
algorithms used and the application domains applied. We further delve into each
of the categories of the proposed taxonomy and present a comprehensive
literature review of the OCC algorithms, techniques and methodologies with a
focus on their significance, limitations and applications. We conclude our
paper by discussing some open research problems in the field of OCC and present
our vision for future research.Comment: 24 pages + 11 pages of references, 8 figure
Spin Orbit Coupling and Spin Waves in Ultrathin Ferromagnets: The Spin Wave Rashba Effect
We present theoretical studies of the influence of spin orbit coupling on the
spin wave excitations of the Fe monolayer and bilayer on the W(110) surface.
The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is active in such films, by virtue of the
absence of reflection symmetry in the plane of the film. When the magnetization
is in plane, this leads to a linear term in the spin wave dispersion relation
for propagation across the magnetization. The dispersion relation thus assumes
a form similar to that of an energy band of an electron trapped on a
semiconductor surfaces with Rashba coupling active. We also show SPEELS
response functions that illustrate the role of spin orbit coupling in such
measurements. In addition to the modifications of the dispersion relations for
spin waves, the presence of spin orbit coupling in the W substrate leads to a
substantial increase in the linewidth of the spin wave modes. The formalism we
have developed applies to a wide range of systems, and the particular system
explored in the numerical calculations provides us with an illustration of
phenomena which will be present in other ultrathin ferromagnet/substrate
combinations
Physical Bounds to the Entropy-Depolarization Relation in Random Light Scattering
We present a theoretical study of multi-mode scattering of light by optically
random media, using the Mueller-Stokes formalism which permits to encode all
the polarization properties of the scattering medium in a real
matrix. From this matrix two relevant parameters can be extracted: the
depolarizing power and the polarization entropy of the scattering
medium. By studying the relation between and , we find that {\em
all} scattering media must satisfy some {\em universal} constraints. These
constraints apply to both classical and quantum scattering processes. The
results obtained here may be especially relevant for quantum communication
applications, where depolarization is synonymous with decoherence.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Structural relaxation of polydisperse hard spheres: comparison of the mode-coupling theory to a Langevin dynamics simulation
We analyze the slow, glassy structural relaxation as measured through
collective and tagged-particle density correlation functions obtained from
Brownian dynamics simulations for a polydisperse system of quasi-hard spheres
in the framework of the mode-coupling theory of the glass transition (MCT).
Asymptotic analyses show good agreement for the collective dynamics when
polydispersity effects are taken into account in a multi-component calculation,
but qualitative disagreement at small when the system is treated as
effectively monodisperse. The origin of the different small- behaviour is
attributed to the interplay between interdiffusion processes and structural
relaxation. Numerical solutions of the MCT equations are obtained taking
properly binned partial static structure factors from the simulations as input.
Accounting for a shift in the critical density, the collective density
correlation functions are well described by the theory at all densities
investigated in the simulations, with quantitative agreement best around the
maxima of the static structure factor, and worst around its minima. A
parameter-free comparison of the tagged-particle dynamics however reveals large
quantiative errors for small wave numbers that are connected to the well-known
decoupling of self-diffusion from structural relaxation and to dynamical
heterogeneities. While deviations from MCT behaviour are clearly seen in the
tagged-particle quantities for densities close to and on the liquid side of the
MCT glass transition, no such deviations are seen in the collective dynamics.Comment: 23 pages, 26 figure
JIGSAW-GEO (1.0): locally orthogonal staggered unstructured grid generation for general circulation modelling on the sphere
An algorithm for the generation of non-uniform, locally-orthogonal staggered
unstructured spheroidal grids is described. This technique is designed to
generate very high-quality staggered Voronoi/Delaunay meshes appropriate for
general circulation modelling on the sphere, including applications to
atmospheric simulation, ocean-modelling and numerical weather prediction. Using
a recently developed Frontal-Delaunay refinement technique, a method for the
construction of high-quality unstructured spheroidal Delaunay triangulations is
introduced. A locally-orthogonal polygonal grid, derived from the associated
Voronoi diagram, is computed as the staggered dual. It is shown that use of the
Frontal-Delaunay refinement technique allows for the generation of very
high-quality unstructured triangulations, satisfying a-priori bounds on element
size and shape. Grid-quality is further improved through the application of
hill-climbing type optimisation techniques. Overall, the algorithm is shown to
produce grids with very high element quality and smooth grading
characteristics, while imposing relatively low computational expense. A
selection of uniform and non-uniform spheroidal grids appropriate for
high-resolution, multi-scale general circulation modelling are presented. These
grids are shown to satisfy the geometric constraints associated with
contemporary unstructured C-grid type finite-volume models, including the Model
for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS-O). The use of user-defined mesh-spacing
functions to generate smoothly graded, non-uniform grids for multi-resolution
type studies is discussed in detail.Comment: Final revisions, as per: Engwirda, D.: JIGSAW-GEO (1.0): locally

Unsupervised Learning of Complex Articulated Kinematic Structures combining Motion and Skeleton Information
In this paper we present a novel framework for unsupervised kinematic structure learning of complex articulated objects from a single-view image sequence. In contrast to prior motion information based methods, which estimate relatively simple articulations, our method can generate arbitrarily complex kinematic structures with skeletal topology by a successive iterative merge process. The iterative merge process is guided by a skeleton distance function which is generated from a novel object boundary generation method from sparse points. Our main contributions can be summarised as follows: (i) Unsupervised complex articulated kinematic structure learning by combining motion and skeleton information. (ii) Iterative fine-to-coarse merging strategy for adaptive motion segmentation and structure smoothing. (iii) Skeleton estimation from sparse feature points. (iv) A new highly articulated object dataset containing multi-stage complexity with ground truth. Our experiments show that the proposed method out-performs state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively
