A Taxonomy of Deep Convolutional Neural Nets for Computer Vision
Traditional architectures for solving computer vision problems and the degree
of success they enjoyed have been heavily reliant on hand-crafted features.
However, of late, deep learning techniques have offered a compelling
alternative -- that of automatically learning problem-specific features. With
this new paradigm, every problem in computer vision is now being re-examined
from a deep learning perspective. Therefore, it has become important to
understand what kind of deep networks are suitable for a given problem.
Although general surveys of this fast-moving paradigm (i.e. deep-networks)
exist, a survey specific to computer vision is missing. We specifically
consider one form of deep networks widely used in computer vision -
convolutional neural networks (CNNs). We start with "AlexNet" as our base CNN
and then examine the broad variations proposed over time to suit different
applications. We hope that our recipe-style survey will serve as a guide,
particularly for novice practitioners intending to use deep-learning techniques
for computer vision.Comment: Published in Frontiers in Robotics and AI (http://goo.gl/6691Bm
Recent Advances in Transfer Learning for Cross-Dataset Visual Recognition: A Problem-Oriented Perspective
This paper takes a problem-oriented perspective and presents a comprehensive
review of transfer learning methods, both shallow and deep, for cross-dataset
visual recognition. Specifically, it categorises the cross-dataset recognition
into seventeen problems based on a set of carefully chosen data and label
attributes. Such a problem-oriented taxonomy has allowed us to examine how
different transfer learning approaches tackle each problem and how well each
problem has been researched to date. The comprehensive problem-oriented review
of the advances in transfer learning with respect to the problem has not only
revealed the challenges in transfer learning for visual recognition, but also
the problems (e.g. eight of the seventeen problems) that have been scarcely
studied. This survey not only presents an up-to-date technical review for
researchers, but also a systematic approach and a reference for a machine
learning practitioner to categorise a real problem and to look up for a
possible solution accordingly
A survey on modern trainable activation functions
In neural networks literature, there is a strong interest in identifying and
defining activation functions which can improve neural network performance. In
recent years there has been a renovated interest of the scientific community in
investigating activation functions which can be trained during the learning
process, usually referred to as "trainable", "learnable" or "adaptable"
activation functions. They appear to lead to better network performance.
Diverse and heterogeneous models of trainable activation function have been
proposed in the literature. In this paper, we present a survey of these models.
Starting from a discussion on the use of the term "activation function" in
literature, we propose a taxonomy of trainable activation functions, highlight
common and distinctive proprieties of recent and past models, and discuss main
advantages and limitations of this type of approach. We show that many of the
proposed approaches are equivalent to adding neuron layers which use fixed
(non-trainable) activation functions and some simple local rule that
constraints the corresponding weight layers.Comment: Published in "Neural Networks" journal (Elsevier
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs): Challenges, Solutions, and Future Directions
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) is a novel class of deep generative
models which has recently gained significant attention. GANs learns complex and
high-dimensional distributions implicitly over images, audio, and data.
However, there exists major challenges in training of GANs, i.e., mode
collapse, non-convergence and instability, due to inappropriate design of
network architecture, use of objective function and selection of optimization
algorithm. Recently, to address these challenges, several solutions for better
design and optimization of GANs have been investigated based on techniques of
re-engineered network architectures, new objective functions and alternative
optimization algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, there is no existing
survey that has particularly focused on broad and systematic developments of
these solutions. In this study, we perform a comprehensive survey of the
advancements in GANs design and optimization solutions proposed to handle GANs
challenges. We first identify key research issues within each design and
optimization technique and then propose a new taxonomy to structure solutions
by key research issues. In accordance with the taxonomy, we provide a detailed
discussion on different GANs variants proposed within each solution and their
relationships. Finally, based on the insights gained, we present the promising
research directions in this rapidly growing field.Comment: 42 pages, Figure 13, Table
