Technology-enhanced Personalised Learning: Untangling the Evidence

    Get PDF
Technology-enhanced personalised learning is not yet common in Germany, which is why we have tasked scientists with summarising the current status of international research on the matter. This study demonstrates the great potential of technology in implementing effective personalised learning. Nevertheless, it has not been assessed yet whether the practical implementation actually works: Even in countries such as the U.S., which lead the way in using techology in classroom settings, hardly any evaluation studies have been done to prove the effectiveness of technology-enhanced personalised learning. In the light of the above, the authors make recommendations for actions to be taken in Germany to make best use of the potential of technology in providing individual support and guidance to students

A Qualitative and Evaluative Study on Recruiting and Retaining Students in College Computer Science Programs

Computer science is a discipline that is increasing in importance and value in our society, yet we are still failing to graduate a sufficient number of students to keep up with the demand required in the United States economy. We research several ways to retain students. We also discuss ways to increase students’ interest in the major, i.e., those who normally would not know about computer science. We discuss ways to increase female participation as well as overall participation in the major

Tablet Usage in Secondary Mathematics Education and Recommendations for Improving Its Effectiveness in the Classroom

    Get PDF
As part of my honor\u27s thesis project at Assumption College, I have been researching the ways that teachers are currently using tablets in their secondary mathematics classrooms. My thesis compares the benefits and drawbacks of having tablets in classrooms, tablets for every student, or no tablets at all. In the spring, I collected survey feedback from mathematics teachers in four different local school districts. I analyzed the data in order to determine the ways tablets are being used in classrooms, the reasons preventing teachers from fully integrating tablets into their instruction, the impacts training has had on tablet use, and what can be changed in order to make teachers more comfortable with integrating tablet technology. Teachers\u27 main problems were lack of resources, lack of preparation time, and lack of training. This thesis provides evidence that enforces the idea that with proper training, the other obstacles that keep teachers from integrating tablets dissipate and allow for teachers to effectively use tablets as a supplemental tool that increases adaptability, efficiency and engagement and enhance learning in the classroom as a whole

Mathematics in Undergraduate Study Programs: Challenges for Research and for the Dialogue between Mathematics and Didactics of Mathematics

    Get PDF
The topic of undergraduate mathematics is of considerable concern for mathematicians in universities, but also for those teaching mathematics as part of undergraduate studies other than mathematics, for employers seeking to employ a mathematically skilled workforce, and for teacher education. Different countries have made and continue to make massive efforts to improve the quality of mathematics education across all age ranges, with most of the research undertaken particularly at the school level. A growing number of mathematicians and mathematics educators now see the need for undertaking interdisciplinary research and collaborative reflections around issues at the tertiary level. The conference aimed to share research results and experiences as a background to establishing a scientific community of mathematicians and mathematics educators whose concern is the theoretical reflection, the research-based empirical investigation, and the exchange of best-practice examples of mathematics education at the tertiary level. The focus of the conference was mathematics education for mathematics, engineering and economy majors and for future mathematics teachers
