Experiences in Integrated Multi-Domain Service Management
Increased competition, complex service provision chains and integrated service offerings require effective techniques for the rapid integration of telecommunications services and management systems over multiple organisational domains. This paper presents some of the results of practical development work in this area, detailing the technologies and standards used, the architectural approach taken and the application of this approach to specific services. A QoS monitoring system in a heterogeneous multi-domain DVB-H platform
The MobileTV, IPTV, and DVB standards (DVB-H/T) have been defined to offer mobile users interactive multimedia services with quality of service (QoS) consistency analogous to TV services. However, the market has yet to provide effective and economical solutions for the real-time delivery of such services to the corresponding transmitters over multi-domain IP networks. The monitoring system proposed in this paper enables the QoS in the IP networks involved in the delivery of real-time multimedia content to the transmitters to be ascertained. The system utilizes the QoS parameters defined in MPEG-2 Transport Streams to detect problems occurring in the heterogeneous multi-domain IP networks. The ability to detect problems having an adverse effect on QoS allows appropriate control actions to be determined to recover the QoS across the composite IP network. The design and implementation of the proposed QoS-Monitoring system (QoS-MS) is presented, followed by analysis of experimental results that demonstrate the feasibility of the system

The next generation of mobile communications systems is expected to offer new business opportunities to existing and new market players. A market-based middleware framework has been recently proposed whereby service providers, independent of network operators, are able to tender online service contracts to network operators in a dynamic and competitive manner. This facilitates a seamless service provision over disparate networks in a consumer-centric manner. The Impact of the Internet on Telecommunication Architectures
The ever-growing popularity of the Internet is dramatically changing the landscape of the communications market place. The two separate worlds of the Internet and Telecommunications are converging. The respective advantages of the two environments are being integrated to fulfill the promise of the information super-highways. In this paper, we examine the impact of the Internet on the main telecommunication architectures, namely the IN, the TMN and TINA. There are two new tendencies for implementing telephony services in combination with the Internet: running part of the control sys tem over the Internet, or conveying both the user data and the control information over the Internet. We examine these two trends, and elaborate on possible ways of salvaging the best parts of the work achieved by the TINA-Consortium in the Internet context
A Cloud Platform-as-a-Service for Multimedia Conferencing Service Provisioning
Multimedia conferencing is the real-time exchange of multimedia content
between multiple parties. It is the basis of a wide range of applications
(e.g., multimedia multiplayer game). Cloud-based provisioning of the
conferencing services on which these applications rely will bring benefits,
such as easy service provisioning and elastic scalability. However, it remains
a big challenge. This paper proposes a PaaS for conferencing service
provisioning. The proposed PaaS is based on a business model from the state of
the art. It relies on conferencing IaaSs that, instead of VMs, offer
conferencing substrates (e.g., dial-in signaling, video mixer and audio mixer).
The PaaS enables composition of new conferences from substrates on the fly.
This has been prototyped in this paper and, in order to evaluate it, a

Delivering Live Multimedia Streams to Mobile Hosts in a Wireless Internet with Multiple Content Aggregators
We consider the distribution of channels of live multimedia content (e.g., radio or TV broadcasts) via multiple content aggregators. In our work, an aggregator receives channels from content sources and redistributes them to a potentially large number of mobile hosts. Each aggregator can offer a channel in various configurations to cater for different wireless links, mobile hosts, and user preferences. As a result, a mobile host can generally choose from different configurations of the same channel offered by multiple alternative aggregators, which may be available through different interfaces (e.g., in a hotspot). A mobile host may need to handoff to another aggregator once it receives a channel. To prevent service disruption, a mobile host may for instance need to handoff to another aggregator when it leaves the subnets that make up its current aggregatorïżœs service area (e.g., a hotspot or a cellular network).\ud
In this paper, we present the design of a system that enables (multi-homed) mobile hosts to seamlessly handoff from one aggregator to another so that they can continue to receive a channel wherever they go. We concentrate on handoffs between aggregators as a result of a mobile host crossing a subnet boundary. As part of the system, we discuss a lightweight application-level protocol that enables mobile hosts to select the aggregator that provides the ïżœbestïżœ configuration of a channel. The protocol comes into play when a mobile host begins to receive a channel and when it crosses a subnet boundary while receiving the channel. We show how our protocol can be implemented using the standard IETF session control and description protocols SIP and SDP. The implementation combines SIP and SDPïżœs offer-answer model in a novel way

Mobile Informal Language Learning: Exploring Welsh Learnersâ Practices
Mobile devices have great potential in supporting language learning, through providing access to vocabulary, lessons and resources, and supporting interactions with other speakers. There may be particular advantages, however, in using such technologies for
learning minority languages.
Welsh is a minority UK language spoken by around 611,000 people in Wales and there is considerable interest among adults in Wales and from Welsh families in learning Welsh. However the small numbers of speakers and their uneven distribution make it difficult for learners outside Welsh speaking âhotspotsâ to hear and practice Welsh.
Mobile learning therefore has great potential for Welsh learners by providing resources wherever the learner is and by supporting web-based learning communities. The study reported here investigates whether this potential is being exploited in practice. It employed interviews and a small survey to study the practices of Welsh learners at all levels. It was found that learners used mobile technologies widely, to access a wide range of resources, although not always on-the-move, and also that many were using courses, in particular one online course. Learnersâ practices in using digital technologies for their Welsh language learning are discussed, and also the implications for both learning other minority languages and for informal mobile learning more generally
A Generic Network and System Management Framework
Networks and distributed systems have formed the basis of an ongoing communications revolution
that has led to the genesis of a wide variety of services. The constantly increasing size and
complexity of these systems does not come without problems. In some organisations, the
deployment of Information Technology has reached a state where the benefits from downsizing and
rightsizing by adding new services are undermined by the effort required to keep the system
running.
Management of networks and distributed systems in general has a straightforward goal: to provide
a productive environment in which work can be performed effectively. The work required for
management should be a small fraction of the total effort. Most IT systems are still managed in an
ad hoc style without any carefully elaborated plan. In such an environment the success of
management decisions depends totally on the qualification and knowledge of the administrator.
The thesis provides an analysis of the state of the art in the area of Network and System
Management and identifies the key requirements that must be addressed for the provisioning of
Integrated Management Services. These include the integration of the different management related
aspects (i.e. integration of heterogeneous Network, System and Service Management).
The thesis then proposes a new framework, INSMware, for the provision of Management Services.
It provides a fundamental basis for the realisation of a new approach to Network and System
Management. It is argued that Management Systems can be derived from a set of pre-fabricated
and reusable Building Blocks that break up the required functionality into a number of separate
entities rather than being developed from scratch. It proposes a high-level logical model in order to
accommodate the range of requirements and environments applicable to Integrated Network and
System Management that can be used as a reference model.
A development methodology is introduced that reflects principles of the proposed approach, and
provides guidelines to structure the analysis, design and implementation phases of a management
system. The INSMware approach can further be combined with the componentware paradigm for
the implementation of the management system. Based on these principles, a prototype for the
management of SNMP systems has been implemented using industry standard middleware
technologies. It is argued that development of a management system based on Componentware
principles can offer a number of benefits. INSMware Components may be re-used and system
solutions will become more modular and thereby easier to construct and maintain
