This paper deals with the electrification of rural villages in developing countries using Sustainable Energy Systems. The rural electrification feasibility study is done using Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable PRO (HOMER PRO). The HOMER PRO energy modelling software is an optimization software improved by U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It helps in designing, comparing and optimizing the design of power generation technologies. In this paper, two rural electrification case studies are modelled and analysed using HOMER PRO. Technical and economic evaluation criteria are applied to study the feasibility of a micro-hydro plant in El DĂptamo (Honduras), and a hybrid plant composed of photovoltaic module arrays, Diesel generators, and flow batteries, in a small island on Victoria Lake. For both cases, we show the results of the studies of the daily and yearly loads, of the resources available in the area and the economic evaluation of the chosen plants configuration

In line with the global target in decarbonising the transportation sector and the noticeable increase of new electric vehicles (EV) owners, concerns are raised regarding the expected quantity of Retired EV Batteries (REVB) exposed to the environment when they reach 70–80% of their original capacity. However, there is significant potential for REVB, after deinstallation, to deliver energy for alternative applications such as storing surplus. This systematic review evaluates state-of-art modelling/experimental studies focused on repurposing REVB in second-life applications. Technical and economic viability of REVB repurposing has been confirmed to solve the unreliability of cleaner energy technologies and mitigate the high investment of new storage systems. 40% of included studies considered hybrid systems with PV being a dominant technology where REVB was evaluated to be small-scaled and large storage systems. Additionally, successful attempts were conducted to evaluate REVB performance in providing grid services. It has however, been discovered intensive grid services applications like frequency regulation, was technically challenging due to demanding working requirements. Reviewed studies considered different prices for REVB due to lack of market regulation on REVB resale; similarly, technical parameters, including initial State of Health (SoH) and State of Charge (SoC) constraints were inconsistent due to lack of standardisation

Distributed energy resources have grown significantly in Canada and the world over the past decade, particularly in the agricultural sector. As P2P (peer-to-peer) energy trading plays a fundamental role in renewable energy uptake and system flexibility for the low-carbon energy transition, this paper provides an overview of this approach from a techno-economic standpoint for two greenhouses located in Leamington, Ontario. The real-time site solar irradiation, ambient temperature, and load demand over 8760 h have been utilized to drive the designs. In this investigation, two cases are assessed for pepper greenhouse: Case I: energy purchase from the grid and Case II: energy purchase from excess energy of neighbor which is cucumber-tomato greenhouse. The integration of 50 kW PV/1 kWh battery/35 kW converter achieves the feasibility criteria by recording net present cost (NPC) and cost of energy (COE), which are 29.6kand29.6k and 0.044/kWh, respectively
