Experimental Approaches to the Composition of Interactive Video Game Music
This project explores experimental approaches and strategies to the composition of interactive music for the medium of video games. Whilst music in video games has not enjoyed the technological progress that other aspects of the software have received, budgets expand and incomes from releases grow. Music is now arguably less interactive than it was in the 1990’s, and whilst graphics occupy large amounts of resources and development time, audio does not garner the same attention. This portfolio develops strategies and audio engines, creating music using the techniques of aleatoric composition, real-time remixing of existing work, and generative synthesisers.
The project created music for three ‘open-form’ games : an example of the racing genre (Kart Racing Pro); an arena-based first-person shooter (Counter-Strike : Source); and a
real-time strategy title (0 A.D.). These games represent a cross-section of ‘sandbox’- type games on the market, as well as all being examples of games with open-ended or
open-source code
Straddling the intersection
Music technology straddles the intersection between art and science and presents those who choose to work within its sphere with many practical challenges as well as creative possibilities. The paper focuses on four main areas: secondary education, higher education, practice and research and finally collaboration. The paper emphasises the importance of collaboration in tackling the challenges of interdisciplinarity and in influencing future technological developments
Visualising Music with Impromptu
This paper discusses our experiments with a method of creating visual representations of music using a graphical library for Impromptu that emulates and builds on Logo’s turtle graphics. We explore the potential and limitations of this library for visualising music, and describe some ways in which this simple system can be utilised to assist the musician by revealing musical structure are demonstrated
The Sound Manifesto
Computing practice today depends on visual output to drive almost all user
interaction. Other senses, such as audition, may be totally neglected, or used
tangentially, or used in highly restricted specialized ways. We have excellent
audio rendering through D-A conversion, but we lack rich general facilities for
modeling and manipulating sound comparable in quality and flexibility to
graphics. We need co-ordinated research in several disciplines to improve the
use of sound as an interactive information channel.
Incremental and separate improvements in synthesis, analysis, speech
processing, audiology, acoustics, music, etc. will not alone produce the
radical progress that we seek in sonic practice. We also need to create a new
central topic of study in digital audio research. The new topic will assimilate
the contributions of different disciplines on a common foundation. The key
central concept that we lack is sound as a general-purpose information channel.
We must investigate the structure of this information channel, which is driven
by the co-operative development of auditory perception and physical sound
production. Particular audible encodings, such as speech and music, illuminate
sonic information by example, but they are no more sufficient for a
characterization than typography is sufficient for a characterization of visual

Introducing TaCEM and the TIAALS software.
This paper introduces the TaCEM project (Technology and Creativity in Electroacoustic Music), funded for 30 months by the Arts and Humanities Research Council in the UK, investigating the relationship between technological innovation and creative practice in electroacoustic music of the last 40 years (http://www.hud.ac.uk/research/researchcentres/tacem/).
It is a collaborative project between the universities of
Huddersfield and Durham in the UK and outputs from the project will include a book and freely available interactive software. This paper explains the context for the project and its goals, and discusses some of the generic software that is being developed as part of the project, intended not only for use in the project itself but also to be freely available for others to use in the study of any electroacoustic work as appropriate
Synesthetic art through 3-D projection: The requirements of a computer-based supermedium
A computer-based form of multimedia art is proposed that uses the computer to fuse aspects of painting, sculpture, dance, music, film, and other media into a one-to-one synthesia of image and sound for spatially synchronous 3-D projection. Called synesthetic art, this conversion of many varied media into an aesthetically unitary experience determines the character and requirements of the system and its software. During the start-up phase, computer stereographic systems are unsuitable for software development. Eventually, a new type of illusory-projective supermedium will be required to achieve the needed combination of large-format projection and convincing real life presence, and to handle the vast amount of 3-D visual and acoustic information required. The influence of the concept on the author's research and creative work is illustrated through two examples

The history of video game music is a subject area that has received little attention by musicologists, and yet the form presents fascinating case studies both of musical minimalism, and the role of technology in influencing and shaping both musical form and aesthetics.
