A Complete, Co-Inductive Syntactic Theory of Sequential Control and State
We present a new co-inductive syntactic theory, eager normal form bisimilarity, for the untyped call-by-value lambda calculus extended with continuations and mutable references. We demonstrate that the associated bisimulation proof principle is easy to use and that it is a powerful tool for proving equivalences between recursive imperative higher-order programs. The theory is modular in the sense that eager normal form bisimilarity for each of the calculi extended with continuations and/or mutable references is a fully abstract extension of eager normal form bisimilarity for its sub-calculi. For each calculus, we prove that eager normal form bisimilarity is a congruence and is sound with respect to contextual equivalence. Furthermore, for the calculus with both continuations and mutable references, we show that eager normal form bisimilarity is complete: it coincides with contextual equivalence
The Structured Process Modeling Method (SPMM) : what is the best way for me to construct a process model?
More and more organizations turn to the construction of process models to support strategical and operational tasks. At the same time, reports indicate quality issues for a considerable part of these models, caused by modeling errors. Therefore, the research described in this paper investigates the development of a practical method to determine and train an optimal process modeling strategy that aims to decrease the number of cognitive errors made during modeling. Such cognitive errors originate in inadequate cognitive processing caused by the inherent complexity of constructing process models. The method helps modelers to derive their personal cognitive profile and the related optimal cognitive strategy that minimizes these cognitive failures. The contribution of the research consists of the conceptual method and an automated modeling strategy selection and training instrument. These two artefacts are positively evaluated by a laboratory experiment covering multiple modeling sessions and involving a total of 149 master students at Ghent University

Connectionist natural language parsing
The key developments of two decades of connectionist parsing are reviewed. Connectionist parsers are assessed according to their ability to learn to represent syntactic structures from examples automatically, without being presented with symbolic grammar rules. This review also considers the extent to which connectionist parsers offer computational models of human sentence processing and provide plausible accounts of psycholinguistic data. In considering these issues, special attention is paid to the level of realism, the nature of the modularity, and the type of processing that is to be found in a wide range of parsers

A general theory of action languages

On Berry's conjectures about the stable order in PCF
PCF is a sequential simply typed lambda calculus language. There is a unique
order-extensional fully abstract cpo model of PCF, built up from equivalence
classes of terms. In 1979, G\'erard Berry defined the stable order in this
model and proved that the extensional and the stable order together form a
bicpo. He made the following two conjectures: 1) "Extensional and stable order
form not only a bicpo, but a bidomain." We refute this conjecture by showing
that the stable order is not bounded complete, already for finitary PCF of
second-order types. 2) "The stable order of the model has the syntactic order
as its image: If a is less than b in the stable order of the model, for finite
a and b, then there are normal form terms A and B with the semantics a, resp.
b, such that A is less than B in the syntactic order." We give counter-examples
to this conjecture, again in finitary PCF of second-order types, and also
refute an improved conjecture: There seems to be no simple syntactic
characterization of the stable order. But we show that Berry's conjecture is
true for unary PCF. For the preliminaries, we explain the basic fully abstract
semantics of PCF in the general setting of (not-necessarily complete) partial
order models (f-models.) And we restrict the syntax to "game terms", with a
