    An Input Power-Aware Maximum Efficiency Tracking Technique for Energy Harvesting in IoT Applications

    The Internet of Things (IoT) enables intelligent monitoring and management in many applications such as industrial and biomedical systems as well as environmental and infrastructure monitoring. As a result, IoT requires billions of wireless sensor network (WSN) nodes equipped with a microcontroller and transceiver. As many of these WSN nodes are off-grid and small-sized, their limited-capacity batteries need periodic replacement. To mitigate the high costs and challenges of these battery replacements, energy harvesting from ambient sources is vital to achieve energy-autonomous operation. Energy harvesting for WSNs is challenging because the available energy varies significantly with ambient conditions and in many applications, energy must be harvested from ultra-low power levels. To tackle these stringent power constraints, this dissertation proposes a discontinuous charging technique for switched-capacitor converters that improves the power conversion efficiency (PCE) at low input power levels and extends the input power harvesting range at which high PCE is achievable. Discontinuous charging delivers current to energy storage only during clock non-overlap time. This enables tuning of the output current to minimize converter losses based on the available input power. Based on this fundamental result, an input power-aware, two-dimensional efficiency tracking technique for WSNs is presented. In addition to conventional switching frequency control, clock nonoverlap time control is introduced to adaptively optimize the power conversion efficiency according to the sensed ambient power levels. The proposed technique is designed and simulated in 90nm CMOS with post-layout extraction. Under the same input and output conditions, the proposed system maintains at least 45% PCE at 4μW input power, as opposed to a conventional continuous system which requires at least 18.7μW to maintain the same PCE. In this technique, the input power harvesting range is extended by 1.5x. The technique is applied to a WSN implementation utilizing the IEEE 802.15.4- compatible GreenNet communications protocol for industrial and wearable applications. This allows the node to meet specifications and achieve energy autonomy when deployed in harsher environments where the input power is 49% lower than what is required for conventional operation

    Power Management Circuits for Energy Harvesting Applications

    Energy harvesting is the process of converting ambient available energy into usable electrical energy. Multiple types of sources are can be used to harness environmental energy: solar cells, kinetic transducers, thermal energy, and electromagnetic waves. This dissertation proposal focuses on the design of high efficiency, ultra-low power, power management units for DC energy harvesting sources. New architectures and design techniques are introduced to achieve high efficiency and performance while achieving maximum power extraction from the sources. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the application of inductive switching regulators and their use in energy harvesting applications. The second implements capacitive switching regulators to minimize the use of external components and present a minimal footprint solution for energy harvesting power management. Analysis and theoretical background for all switching regulators and linear regulators are described in detail. Both solutions demonstrate how low power, high efficiency design allows for a self-sustaining, operational device which can tackle the two main concerns for energy harvesting: maximum power extraction and voltage regulation. Furthermore, a practical demonstration with an Internet of Things type node is tested and positive results shown by a fully powered device from harvested energy.     Front End of a 900MHz RFID for Biological Sensing

    This thesis presents the front end of a 900MHz passive RFID for biological sensing. The components blocks of the front end consist of power harvester, switch capacitor voltage regulator, phase lock loop and a modulator and demodulator. As the RFID is passive so the power resource is limited hence the main focus while implementing all the block was low power and high efficiency power conversion. All the individual block were optimized to provide maximum efficiency. For the harvester to achieve high efficiency and high output voltage a design approach is discussed by which the device sizes are optimized and the values of the matching network components are solved. The efficiency achieved with this approach is 34% while supplying 74�[email protected]. The switch capacitor voltage regulator would supply power to the digital core of the RFID, which will operate at subtheshold or moderate inversion. The switch capacitor implemented in this work is a adaptive voltage regulator, as I intend to use the dynamic supply voltage scaling technique to compensate for the reduction in reliability of performance of the circuit due to variation of VTH across process due to random doping effects and temperature in subthreshold.The phase lock loop (PLL) block in this front end provide the system clock synchronized with the base station to all the backend blocks like the digital controller, memory, and the analog to digital converter ADC and the switch capacitor voltage regulator. The PLL is a low power with jitter of 24nsec and is capable of clock data recovery from EPC gen 2 protocol format data and consumes 3�W of power Finally a ultra low power AM (amplitude modulation) demodulator is presented which is consumes only 100nW and is capable of demodulating a double-sideband amplitude modulated (DSB-AM) signal centered at 900MHz and the modulating frequency is 160KHz. The demodulator can demodulate signal having as low as -5dBm power and 50% modulation index.     Hybrid monolithic integration of high-power DC-DC converters in a high-voltage technology

    The supply of electrical energy to home, commercial, and industrial users has become ubiquitous, and it is hard to imagine a world without the facilities provided by electrical energy. Despite the ever increasing efficiency of nearly every electrical application, the worldwide demand for electrical power continues to increase, since the number of users and applications more than compensates for these technological improvements. In order to maintain the affordability and feasibility of the total production, it is essential for the distribution of the produced electrical energy to be as efficient as possible. In other words the loss in the power distribution is to be minimized. By transporting electrical energy at the maximum safe voltage, the current in the conductors, and the associated conduction loss can remain as low as possible. In order to optimize the total efficiency, the high transportation voltage needs to be converted to the appropriate lower voltage as close as possible to the end user. Obviously, this conversion also needs to be as efficient, affordable, and compact as possible. Because of the ever increasing integration of electronic systems, where more and more functionality is combined in monolithically integrated circuits, the cost, the power consumption, and the size of these electronic systems can be greatly reduced. This thorough integration is not limited to the electronic systems that are the end users of the electrical energy, but can also be applied to the power conversion itself. In most modern applications, the voltage conversion is implemented as a switching DC-DC converter, in which electrical energy is temporarily stored in reactive elements, i.e. inductors or capacitors. High switching speeds are used to allow for a compact and efficient implementation. For low power levels, typically below 1 Watt, it is possible to monolithically implement the voltage conversion on an integrated circuit. In some cases, this is even done on the same integrated circuit that is the end user of the electrical energy to minimize the system dimensions. For higher power levels, it is no longer feasible to achieve the desired efficiency with monolithically integrated components, and some external components prove indispensable. Usually, the reactive components are the main limiting factor, and are the first components to be moved away from the integrated circuit for increasing power levels. The semiconductor components, including the power transistors, remain part of the integrated circuit. Using this hybrid approach, it is possible in modern converterapplications to process around 60 Watt, albeit limited to voltages of a few Volt. For hybrid integrated converters with an output voltage of tens of Volt, the power is limited to approximately 10 Watt. For even higher power levels, the integrated power transistors also become a limiting factor, and are replaced with discrete power devices. In these discrete converters, greatly increased power levels become possible, although the system size rapidly increases. In this work, the limits of the hybrid approach are explored when using so-called smart-power technologies. Smart-power technologies are standard lowcost submicron CMOS technologies that are complemented with a number of integrated high-voltage devices. By using an appropriate combination of smart-power technologies and circuit topologies, it is possible to improve on the current state-of-the-art converters, by optimizing the size, the cost, and the efficiency. To determine the limits of smart-power DC-DC converters, we first discuss the major contributing factors for an efficient energy distribution, and take a look at the role of voltage conversion in the energy distribution. Considering the limitations of the technologies and the potential application areas, we define two test-cases in the telecommunications sector for which we want to optimize the hybrid monolithic integration in a smart-power technology. Subsequently, we explore the specifications of an ideal converter, and the relevant properties of the affordable smart-power technologies for the implementation of DC-DC converters. Taking into account the limitations of these technologies, we define a cost function that allows to systematically evaluate the different potential converter topologies, without having to perform a full design cycle for each topology. From this cost function, we notice that the de facto default topology selection in discrete converters, which is typically based on output power, is not optimal for converters with integrated power transistors. Based on the cost function and the boundary conditions of our test-cases, we determine the optimal topology for a smart-power implementation of these applications. Then, we take another step towards the real world and evaluate the influence of parasitic elements in a smart-power implementation of switching converters. It is noticed that the voltage overshoot caused by the transformer secondary side leakage inductance is a major roadblock for an efficient implementation. Since the usual approach to this voltage overshoot in discrete converters is not applicable in smart-power converters due to technological limitations, an alternative approach is shown and implemented. The energy from the voltage overshoot is absorbed and transferred to the output of the converter. This allows for a significant reduction in the voltage overshoot, while maintaining a high efficiency, leading to an efficient, compact, and low-cost implementation. The effectiveness of this approach was tested and demonstrated in both a version using a commercially available integrated circuit, and our own implementation in a smart-power integrated circuit. Finally, we also take a look at the optimization of switching converters over the load range by exploiting the capabilities of highly integrated converters. Although the maximum output power remains one of the defining characteristics of converters, it has been shown that most converters spend a majority of their lifetime delivering significantly lower output power. Therefore, it is also desirable to optimize the efficiency of the converter at reduced output current and output power. By splitting the power transistors in multiple independent segments, which are turned on or off in function of the current, the efficiency at low currents can be significantly improved, without introducing undesirable frequency components in the output voltage, and without harming the efficiency at higher currents. These properties allow a near universal application of the optimization technique in hybrid monolithic DC-DC converter applications, without significant impact on the complexity and the cost of the system. This approach for the optimization of switching converters over the load range was demonstrated using a boost converter with discrete power transistors. The demonstration of our smart-power implementation was limited to simulations due to an issue with a digital control block. On a finishing note, we formulate the general conclusions and provide an outlook on potential future work based on this research

    As wireless embedded systems transition from lab-scale research prototypes to large-scale commercial deployments, providing reliable and dependable system operation becomes absolutely crucial to ensure successful adoption. However, the untethered nature of wireless embedded systems severely limits the ability to access, debug, and control device operation after deployment—post-deployment or in-situ visibility. It is intuitive that the more information we have about a system’s operation after deployment, the better/faster we can respond upon the detection of anomalous behavior. Therefore, post-deployment visibility is a foundation upon which other runtime reliability techniques can be built. However, visibility into system operation diminishes significantly once the devices are remotely deployed, and we refer to this problem as a lack of post-deployment visibility

    As CMOS technology scales down, Process, Voltage, Temperature and Ageing (PVTA) variations have an increasing impact on the performance and power consumption of electronic devices. These issues may hold back the continuous improvement of these devices in the near future. There are several ways to face the variability problem: to increase the operating margins of maximum clock frequency, the implementation of lithographic friendly layout styles, and the last one and the focus of this thesis, to adapt the circuit to its actual manufacturing and environment conditions by tuning some of the adjustable parameters once the circuit has been manufactured. The main challenge of this thesis is to develop a low-area variability compensation mechanism to automatically mitigate PVTA variations in run-time, i.e. while integrated circuit is running. This implies the development of a sensor to obtain the most accurate picture of variability, and the implementation of a control block to knob some of the electrical parameters of the circuit.A mesura que la tecnologia CMOS escala, les variacions de Procés, Voltatge, Temperatura i Envelliment (PVTA) tenen un impacte creixent en el rendiment i el consum de potència dels dispositius electrònics. Aquesta problemàtica podria arribar a frenar la millora contínua d'aquests dispositius en un futur proper. Hi ha diverses maneres d'afrontar el problema de la variabilitat: relaxar el marge de la freqüència màxima d'operació, implementar dissenys físics de xips més fàcils de litografiar, i per últim i com a tema principal d'aquesta tesi, adaptar el xip a les condicions de fabricació i d'entorn mitjançant la modificació d'algun dels seus paràmetres ajustables una vegada el circuit ja ha estat fabricat. El principal repte d'aquesta tesi és desenvolupar un mecanisme de compensació de variabilitat per tal de mitigar les variacions PVTA de manera automàtica en temps d'execució, és a dir, mentre el xip està funcionant.     Development of electronics for microultrasound capsule endoscopy

    Development of intracorporeal devices has surged in the last decade due to advancements in the semiconductor industry, energy storage and low-power sensing systems. This work aims to present a thorough systematic overview and exploration of the microultrasound (µUS) capsule endoscopy (CE) field as the development of electronic components will be key to a successful applicable µUSCE device. The research focused on investigating and designing high-voltage (HV, < 36 V) generating and driving circuits as well as a low-noise amplifier (LNA) for battery-powered and volume-limited systems. In implantable applications, HV generation with maximum efficiency is required to improve the operational lifetime whilst reducing the cost of the device. A fully integrated hybrid (H) charge pump (CP) comprising a serial-parallel (SP) stage was designed and manufactured for > 20 V and 0 - 100 µA output capabilities. The results were compared to a Dickson (DKCP) occupying the same chip area; further improvements in the SPCP topology were explored and a new switching scheme for SPCPs was introduced. A second regulated CP version was excogitated and manufactured to use with an integrated µUS pulse generator. The CP was manufactured and tested at different output currents and capacitive loads; its operation with an US pulser was evaluated and a novel self-oscillating CP mechanism to eliminate the need of an auxiliary clock generator with a minimum area overhead was devised. A single-output universal US pulser was designed, manufactured and tested with 1.5 MHz, 3 MHz, and 28 MHz arrays to achieve a means of fully-integrated, low-power transducer driving. The circuit was evaluated for power consumption and pulse generation capabilities with different loads. Pulse-echo measurements were carried out and compared with those from a commercial US research system to characterise and understand the quality of the generated pulse. A second pulser version for a 28 MHz array was derived to allow control of individual elements. The work involved its optimisation methodology and design of a novel HV feedback-based level-shifter. A low-noise amplifier (LNA) was designed for a wide bandwidth µUS array with a centre frequency of 28 MHz. The LNA was based on an energy-efficient inverter architecture. The circuit encompassed a full power-down functionality and was investigated for a self-biased operation to achieve lower chip area. The explored concepts enable realisation of low power and high performance LNAs for µUS frequencies
