A Complete Finite Equational Axiomatisation of the Fracterm Calculus for Common Meadows
We analyse abstract data types that model numerical structures with a concept
of error. Specifically, we focus on arithmetic data types that contain an error
flag whose main purpose is to always return a value for division. To
rings and fields we add a division operator and study a class of algebras
called \textit{common meadows} wherein . The set of equations true
in all common meadows is named the \textit{fracterm calculus of common
meadows}. We give a finite equational axiomatisation of the fracterm calculus
of common meadows and prove that it is complete and that the fracterm calculus
is decidable
Computability and Tiling Problems
In this thesis we will present and discuss various results pertaining to
tiling problems and mathematical logic, specifically computability theory. We
focus on Wang prototiles, as defined in [32]. We begin by studying Domino
Problems, and do not restrict ourselves to the usual problems concerning finite
sets of prototiles. We first consider two domino problems: whether a given set
of prototiles has total planar tilings, which we denote , or whether
it has infinite connected but not necessarily total tilings, (short for
`weakly tile'). We show that both , and
thereby both and are -complete. We also show that
the opposite problems, and (short for `Strongly Not Tile')
are such that and so both
and are both -complete. Next we give some consideration to the
problem of whether a given (infinite) set of prototiles is periodic or
aperiodic. We study the sets of periodic tilings, and of
aperiodic tilings. We then show that both of these sets are complete for the
class of problems of the form . We also present
results for finite versions of these tiling problems. We then move on to
consider the Weihrauch reducibility for a general total tiling principle
as well as weaker principles of tiling, and show that there exist Weihrauch
equivalences to closed choice on Baire space, . We also show
that all Domino Problems that tile some infinite connected region are Weihrauch
reducible to . Finally, we give a prototile set of 15
prototiles that can encode any Elementary Cellular Automaton (ECA). We make use
of an unusual tile set, based on hexagons and lozenges that we have not see in
the literature before, in order to achieve this.Comment: PhD thesis. 179 pages, 13 figure
Classifying word problems of finitely generated algebras via computable reducibility
We contribute to a recent research program which aims at revisiting the study of the complexity of word problems, a major area of research in combinatorial algebra, through the lens of the theory of computably enumerable equivalence
relations (ceers), which has considerably grown in recent times. To pursue our analysis, we rely on the most popular way of assessing the complexity of ceers, that is via computable reducibility on equivalence relations, and its corresponding degree structure (the c-degrees). On the negative side, building on previous work of Kasymov and Khoussainov, we individuate a collection of c-degrees of ceers which cannot be realized by the word problem of any finitely generated algebra of finite type. On the positive side, we show that word problems of finitely generated semigroups realize a collection of c-degrees which embeds rich structures and is large in several reasonable ways
Nondeterminism and Guarded Commands
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relevance of nondeterminism in
computer science, with a special emphasis on Dijkstra's guarded commands
language.Comment: 34 pages. This is authors' version of Chapter 8 of the book K.R. Apt

Programs as Diagrams: From Categorical Computability to Computable Categories
This is a draft of the textbook/monograph that presents computability theory
using string diagrams. The introductory chapters have been taught as graduate
and undergraduate courses and evolved through 8 years of lecture notes. The
later chapters contain new ideas and results about categorical computability
and some first steps into computable category theory. The underlying
categorical view of computation is based on monoidal categories with program
evaluators, called *monoidal computers*. This categorical structure can be
viewed as a single-instruction diagrammatic programming language called Run,
whose only instruction is called RUN. This version: improved text, moved the
final chapter to the next volume. (The final version will continue lots of
exercises and workouts, but already this version has severely degraded graphics
to meet the size bounds.)Comment: 150 pages, 81 figure
Mechanised metamathematics : an investigation of first-order logic and set theory in constructive type theory
In this thesis, we investigate several key results in the canon of metamathematics, applying the contemporary perspective of formalisation in constructive type theory and mechanisation in the Coq proof assistant. Concretely, we consider the central completeness, undecidability, and incompleteness theorems of first-order logic as well as properties of the axiom of choice and the continuum hypothesis in axiomatic set theory. Due to their fundamental role in the foundations of mathematics and their technical intricacies, these results have a long tradition in the codification as standard literature and, in more recent investigations, increasingly serve as a benchmark for computer mechanisation. With the present thesis, we continue this tradition by uniformly analysing the aforementioned cornerstones of metamathematics in the formal framework of constructive type theory. This programme offers novel insights into the constructive content of completeness, a synthetic approach to undecidability and incompleteness that largely eliminates the notorious tedium obscuring the essence of their proofs, as well as natural representations of set theory in the form of a second-order axiomatisation and of a fully type-theoretic account. The mechanisation concerning first-order logic is organised as a comprehensive Coq library open to usage and contribution by external users.
Rethinking the notion of oracle: A link between synthetic descriptive set theory and effective topos theory
We present three different perspectives of oracle. First, an oracle is a
blackbox; second, an oracle is an endofunctor on the category of represented
spaces; and third, an oracle is an operation on the object of truth-values.
These three perspectives create a link between the three fields, computability
theory, synthetic descriptive set theory, and effective topos theory
