    Proceedings of the International Workshop on EuroPLOT Persuasive Technology for Learning, Education and Teaching (IWEPLET 2013)

    "This book contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on EuroPLOT Persuasive Technology for Learning, Education and Teaching (IWEPLET) 2013 which was held on 16.-17.September 2013 in Paphos (Cyprus) in conjunction with the EC-TEL conference. The workshop and hence the proceedings are divided in two parts: on Day 1 the EuroPLOT project and its results are introduced, with papers about the specific case studies and their evaluation. On Day 2, peer-reviewed papers are presented which address specific topics and issues going beyond the EuroPLOT scope. This workshop is one of the deliverables (D 2.6) of the EuroPLOT project, which has been funded from November 2010 – October 2013 by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the European Commission through the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLL) by grant #511633. The purpose of this project was to develop and evaluate Persuasive Learning Objects and Technologies (PLOTS), based on ideas of BJ Fogg. The purpose of this workshop is to summarize the findings obtained during this project and disseminate them to an interested audience. Furthermore, it shall foster discussions about the future of persuasive technology and design in the context of learning, education and teaching. The international community working in this area of research is relatively small. Nevertheless, we have received a number of high-quality submissions which went through a peer-review process before being selected for presentation and publication. We hope that the information found in this book is useful to the reader and that more interest in this novel approach of persuasive design for teaching/education/learning is stimulated. We are very grateful to the organisers of EC-TEL 2013 for allowing to host IWEPLET 2013 within their organisational facilities which helped us a lot in preparing this event. I am also very grateful to everyone in the EuroPLOT team for collaborating so effectively in these three years towards creating excellent outputs, and for being such a nice group with a very positive spirit also beyond work. And finally I would like to thank the EACEA for providing the financial resources for the EuroPLOT project and for being very helpful when needed. This funding made it possible to organise the IWEPLET workshop without charging a fee from the participants.

    An application supporting personal and team documentation of students’ design and prototyping processes in FabLab education context

    Abstract. Documentation is common practice in an integral part of a modern digital fabrication process while designing a prototype in Fab Lab. DIY and Maker communities are trying to share their documentation through the Fab Lab global networks. Sometimes, the users follow different ways to make their documentation, which has no straightforward interpretation for other users or communities. For designing a complex and original prototype, the users of FabLab often eradicate the challenging phases and forget to document the essential parts of the solutions that occur during the design process. Documentation tools figure out the best possible writing technique(s) that can be shared with the global fab Lab researchers. In designing the prototype, mobility becomes a factor for making the documentation tools more comfortable to the Fab Lab users as well as future researchers. Additionally, the time taken during the documentation process increases during the post-development phase of the prototype. In this work, we have introduced a new and upgraded version of the existing tool called “Protobooth Oulu app”, and expanded different features for documenting while doing the prototype designing technique for consuming less time and ensuring better mobility. This tool also presents and performs the existing guidelines for the Fab Lab Oulu users for creating, managing, and updating personal or team works. Connectivity between an instructor and a team will add useful features for developing the digital fabrication process(s) regarding the documentation practices in Fab Lab Oulu. Different types of scaling and ongoing project feedback are considered the best approach for making the documentation unique and distinguished from other works. Additionally, we also discussed new admin tools for fetching the different scaling data for future data visualization. Post-development in prototype designing research will ensure the advantage of generating and visualizing the data for predicting the analytical result. In this thesis, we also discussed the admin tools and its features for making rational decisions as to the uniqueness of the prototype designs

    Investigation and Evaluation of Methods for Measuring Surface Texture on Worktops and Kitchen Fronts

    In this Master Thesis different methods for measuring and evaluating surface textures have been investigated and evaluated. A method for digitizing textures called photometric stereo have also been studied. The purpose has been to find methods that can replace or supplement the current method of visual inspection used for surface texture studies by IKEA of Sweden. The suggested methods are going to be used by the company for securing that the surface textures on laminate worktops and pigment lacquered kitchen fronts are both consistent between different suppliers and matching the original reference sample. The thesis work has been written in three phases. First a background study of surface texture measurement methods has been carried out as well as a market research about what instruments are used for surface texture measurements. The next step has been an investigation of what problems IKEA is experiencing and finding the cause of these problems. This includes studies of the manufacturing process for laminates, the tools used for giving texture to laminates and how textures patterns are developed. The manufacturing process of the kitchen front has been also studied. In the last step the different methods have been tested and evaluated based on the needs of IKEA of Sweden

    What attracts vehicle consumers’ buying:A Saaty scale-based VIKOR (SSC-VIKOR) approach from after-sales textual perspective?

    Purpose: The increasingly booming e-commerce development has stimulated vehicle consumers to express individual reviews through online forum. The purpose of this paper is to probe into the vehicle consumer consumption behavior and make recommendations for potential consumers from textual comments viewpoint. Design/methodology/approach: A big data analytic-based approach is designed to discover vehicle consumer consumption behavior from online perspective. To reduce subjectivity of expert-based approaches, a parallel Naïve Bayes approach is designed to analyze the sentiment analysis, and the Saaty scale-based (SSC) scoring rule is employed to obtain specific sentimental value of attribute class, contributing to the multi-grade sentiment classification. To achieve the intelligent recommendation for potential vehicle customers, a novel SSC-VIKOR approach is developed to prioritize vehicle brand candidates from a big data analytical viewpoint. Findings: The big data analytics argue that “cost-effectiveness” characteristic is the most important factor that vehicle consumers care, and the data mining results enable automakers to better understand consumer consumption behavior. Research limitations/implications: The case study illustrates the effectiveness of the integrated method, contributing to much more precise operations management on marketing strategy, quality improvement and intelligent recommendation. Originality/value: Researches of consumer consumption behavior are usually based on survey-based methods, and mostly previous studies about comments analysis focus on binary analysis. The hybrid SSC-VIKOR approach is developed to fill the gap from the big data perspective

    Manufacturing and Evaluation of a Biologically Inspired Engineered MAV Wing Compared to the Manduca Sexta Wing Under Simulated Flapping Conditions

    In recent years, researchers have expressed a vested interest in the concepts surrounding flapping wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) that are capable of both range and complex maneuvering. Most research in this arena has found itself concentrated on topics such as flapping dynamics and the associated fluid-structure interactions inherent in the motion, however there still remains myriad questions concerning the structural qualities intrinsic to the wings themselves. Using nature as the template for design, FWMAV wings were constructed using carbon fiber and Kapton and tested under simplified flapping conditions by analyzing frozen\u27 digital images of the deformed wing by methods of photogrammetry. This flapping motion was achieved via the design and construction of a flapper that emulates several of the kinematic features that can be seen in naturally occurring flyers. The response to this motion was then compared to the inspiring specimen\u27s wings, the North American Hawkmoth (Manduca Sexta), under the same flapping conditions in order to identify some of the key features that nature has deemed necessary for successful flight
