Virtual reality (VR) is an innovative technology that has regained popularity in recent years. In the field of education, VR has been introduced as a tool to enhance learning experiences. This thesis presents an exploration of how VR is used from the context of educators and learners. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, including surveying and interviewing educators, and conducting empirical studies to examine engagement, usability, and user behaviour within VR. The results revealed educators are interested in using VR for a wide range of scenarios, including thought exercises, virtual field trips, and simulations. However, they face several barriers to incorporating VR into their practice, such as cost, lack of training, and technical challenges. A subsequent study found that virtual reality can no longer be assumed to be more engaging than desktop equivalents. This empirical study showed that engagement levels were similar in both VR and non-VR environments, suggesting that the novelty effect of VR may be less pronounced than previously assumed. A study against a VR mind mapping artifact, VERITAS, demonstrated that complex interactions are possible on low-cost VR devices, making VR accessible to educators and students. The analysis of user behaviour within this VR artifact showed that quantifiable strategies emerge, contributing to the understanding of how to design for collaborative VR experiences. This thesis provides insights into how the end-users in the education space perceive and use VR. The findings suggest that while educators are interested in using VR, they face barriers to adoption. The research highlights the need to design VR experiences, with understanding of existing pedagogy, that are engaging with careful thought applied to complex interactions, particularly for collaborative experiences. This research contributes to the understanding of the potential of VR in education and provides recommendations for educators and designers to enhance learning experiences using VR

As the demand for integrating educational technologies within the mathematics teaching curriculum increases, there is a growing need for teachers to develop the competencies and skills required for effective technology integration into their teaching practices. Massive Open Online Courses for Educators (MOOC-Eds) offer teachers opportunities for professional development. Consequently, it is worthwhile to explore the impact of active participation in these professional learning courses. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the distinct types of knowledge teachers gained from active participation in the Teaching Mathematics with Technology (TMT) MOOC-Ed using discussion forums as a space to assess teacher learning. A concurrent embedded mixed methods design (QUAN + QUAL) was employed for this study. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected and analyzed separately then data was mixed for joint analysis. Two theoretical frameworks were employed to frame this study and support data collection, analysis, and interpreting results. The Productive Online Discussion Model served as an a priori coding frame employed to analyze the dispositions and learner actions of the discussion forum contributions of active teacher learners. A pre- and post- TPACK survey measuring technological knowledge (TK), pedagogical knowledge (PK), content knowledge (CK), and technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) was administered to evaluate active teacher learners change in knowledge before and after the MOOC-Ed experience. Qualitative results from the study indicated that overall, discussions to comprehend occurred most frequently in the discussion forums. Results also showed the frequency of forum contributions categorized as discussing to critique, construct knowledge, and share improved understanding increased during the MOOC-Ed while discussions to comprehend decreased. Quantitative results showed statistically significant growth with large effect size from pre- to post- survey in the TPACK domain for active and highly active teacher learners. Teachers reported the greatest effect on their professional learning experience was increased knowledge of combining pedagogical techniques with technological tools and their content knowledge to teach student-centered lessons. Integrated results indicated that there was a meaningful relationship between highly active teacher learners TPACK growth and their distinct forum contributions that sought to critique, construct knowledge, and share improved understanding. Implications for research emphasize the importance of understanding the different contexts in which teachers teach and designing online courses to meet their diverse learning needs using research-based principles. Additionally, teachers of online learning should consider implementing authentic tasks that contain relevant content, discussion forum questioning that elicits higher order thinking, and opportunities for reflection. Future research is suggested in the areas of employing language technologies (i.e., text mining tools) to explore online interactions and gain insight into user satisfaction and increasing learner engagement and examining to impact of duration of how duration affects participation and attrition rates in professional learning courses

[EN] With the integration of technologies in education, every country has proposed technology development plans in the educational field and increased investment. China has fully realized that ICT has played a significant role in promoting future educational development and has determined the status of technology development for education from a national strategy. Therefore, it has created great changes in the teachers´ teaching and learning environments. This changing process in education is creating and will continue to create new challenges for teachers' working methods in pedagogical, didactic, and administrative contexts and their specialized knowledge and basic skills. The teacher is the key element in the whole educational process, particularly in educational action for transformation and improvement of education in fostering students' digital skills, specialized knowledge, and basic skills. Under these circumstances, the digital competence of teachers has received world attention that requires developing learning skills and receiving knowledge from various sources available in modern society, producing new demands for understanding and using digital learning opportunities in the educational field. Serval concepts have been used to describe the teachers´ use of ICT, such as teachers´ information literacy, teachers´ digital literacy, teachers´ ICT skills, teachers´ information technology skills, teachers´ ICT competency, and teachers´ digital competence. There is a close connection between these commonly used concepts. However, based on the definition of digital competence, we concluded that digital competence is a boundary concept underpinned by digital literacy, media literacy, information, and data literacy. Hence, the concept of digital competence is used for describing the use of ICT in the present study because it offers a more comprehensive view of the use of technology. Many nations and organizations have set considerable demands concerning teachers´ digital competence, and the theoretical framework related to teachers´ digital competence has been launched. This study provides a comprehensive overview of the six main national and international frameworks published. There are various Europe-supported frameworks, one China-supported framework, one United States-supported framework, two UNESCO-supported frameworks, as well as A Global Framework of Reference on Digital Literacy Skills for Indicator 4.4.2 of the Sustainable Development Goals. There is an overview of efforts and challenges on teachers' digital competence in China, which provides the starting points for a subject of reflection and analysis of the Chinese teachers' digital competence status. The overview mainly focuses on the main terms used to talk about teachers' use of technology for teaching and learning, the main purposes of the previous studies related to the digital competence of teachers, the main characteristics of the research methods, and the main proposals made to improve the digital competence. This study proposed a diagnostic evaluation from a quantitative paradigm, which used a non-experimental-cross-sectional design. Thus, an ex-post-facto methodology based on survey studies was implemented to assess and analyze Chinese pre-service and in-service teachers' perception of digital competence in Anhui province. Moreover, this quantitative study explores the relationship between sociodemographic factors (age, educational degree level, ICT courses, years of teaching experience) and their digital competence level. The results of this study firstly demonstrated that both pre-service and in-service teachers in Anhui province have an excellent perception of digital competence in the three measured areas. Secondly, factors such as age, years of teaching, and educational background influence pre-and in-service teachers’ digital competence. Finally, our primary recommendation for improving Chinese teachers´ digital competence is teachers’ training. After the theoretical support for pre-service and in-service K-12 teacher training was investigated, the training program was designed. Five clear strategies on excellence or best practice for teacher training integrated approach to improving Chinese teacher training: 1). teacher educators as role models; 2). scaffolding of authentic technology experiences; 3). learning instructional design with technology; 4). the reflection on the role of technology in education; and 5). the training modality. The 3rd edition of the UNESCO ICT Competency Framework for Teachers was selected as the framework used. The training program is divided into five training modules depending on the different levels of digital competence of the population. The formative assessment with 12 practices was designed for the training program, as well as the summative assessment.

The thesis examined dissemination of public health information through asynchronous online learning provision. The context is public health emergencies, and the study includes evidence from epidemic and pandemic learning responses through online dissemination targeted to health professionals and open to any interested audiences. The research is placed at the crossroads of information dissemination, health communication and learning technologies. The research investigated key considerations for platform requirements to mount a learning response with a global reach; and core requirements for the learning material packaging to suit massive audiences. The thesis consists of four publications of which three provide evidence on COVID-19 online learning material, and one provide evidence from other infectious disease online courses on Ebola. Statisticsdriven findings were made based on meta-data analysis of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) open-source learning platform, OpenWHO.org, and included platform-wide big data metrics and several survey analyses. All data and evidence outputs were analysed utilising the thematic analysis approach and were coded into emerging themes of importance that shed light on the utility of the information dissemination. The study sought to operationalise key considerations relating to health information dissemination as an asynchronous online learning delivery and recommends two frameworks; one for considerations relating to platform capabilities and the other for aspects relating to the packaging of online learning material. The findings of this thesis can inform any learning provider who operates through online learning means with an aim to reach unlimited mass audiences in an easily scalable way, with particular emphasis on adjustments required for sudden onset events and emergencies where the aim is to save lives through online learning and information dissemination

The emergence of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and the visibility they have gained in the media and in academia have led some authors to question whether this disruptive technology would drastically change the world of education and business schools. While some business schools have started to develop MOOCs themselves, their overall effect on their business model is still not fully understood, and there is often much criticism within schools about their introduction. Divisions have emerged between advocates and outspoken critics. In this context, it seemed appropriate to seek to better understand the process, impacts and implications of the introduction of MOOCs on the business model of business schools. With a single case design, this thesis is an empirical, exploratory and inductive study. Thirty-three semi-structured interviews with targeted MOOC-specialist faculty members, managers and experts was the primary data, with secondary data also collected during this process. Overall, two main research findings have resulted from this study. First, six drivers that lead individuals and business schools to make and support MOOCs have been identified, and second, the impact of the introduction of MOOCs on the business model of business schools is reflected in three dimensions: changes to the value proposition; changes to teaching in the form of new resources, processes and knowledge; and changes to marketing with themes related to reputation, reach and awareness. This study was developed from the business school perspective, contributing to the business model literature by looking into the sector of executive education and management, which is evolving rapidly around the world and growing in importance in terms of its personal, institutional and social impacts. This study contributes to the literature on business models by describing how the use of MOOCs changes the business model of business schools. Specifically, their use broadens the value proposition of business schools and changes their teaching and marketing. The drivers for business schools to introduce MOOCs are to enhance their reputation, to create new marketing tools, to learn how to be prepared, to have a new way of teaching, and finally, to teach more people

    Get PDF
