A Review of Work Based Learning in Higher Education

The idea of work based learning in higher education might sound like a contradiction in terms. Work based learning is surely in the the workplace. The senses in which it might also, under certain conditions, be in higher education are explored in this review. There are increasing arrangements whereby people can obtain academic recognition for learning which has taken place outside of educational institutions. In addition to traditional forms of professional education and sandwich courses, one can add a host of relationships between employers and higher education institutions which involve quite fundamental questioning of the roles and responsibilities of each in the continuing education and training of adults. Such developments can be related to broader themes concerning the organisation of knowledge in society, the changing nature of work and career, the learning society and the implications they hold for individual workers, their employers and educational providers. The Department for Education and Employment sponsored the study to produce a substantial literature review of progress and issues raised in the field of work based learning in higher education. The first part of the book provides a contextual and conceptual backdrop against which more practical aspects of work based learning are then considered in part two. The final part considers strategic issues of implementation for higher education institutions, employers and individuals, before turning to more wide ranging issues of policy

Programs and Instruments for Promoting Innovation with Technology-Based Companies in Brazil

The need to stimulate technological entrepreneurship has been one of the biggest challenges faced in Science, Technology and Innovation Policies in Brazil. Therefore, the present research sought to carry out a comparative study of different programs and instruments to foster innovation for smaller companies coordinated by the Federal Government and operated through its Autarchies, Public Companies and Social Organizations. The following programs were used as research objects: (1) STARTUP BRAZIL; (2) STARTUP-INDUSTRY CONNECTION; (3) EMBRAPII – SEBRAE PROGRAM; (4) FINEP STARTUP; (5) STARTUP – INDUSTRY CONNECTION 4.0; (6) CONECTA STARTUP BRAZIL. We sought to investigate the following aspects: (1) proposed objectives; (2) profiles of targeted companies; (3) promotion frequency; (4) available financial resources; (5) fostering technological cooperation with STIs, and (6) mobilization of actors from innovation ecosystem. The research’s results demonstrated that there were upgrades in strategies to foster innovation. New programs started to establish new rules with the purpose of stimulating and/or conditioning partnerships’ formation among companies and institutions present in the innovation ecosystem

The experience of passenger transport start-ups in greater Cairo: An analysis

This research explores start-ups that provide passenger transport services in Cairo, Egypt. It studies the various factors that affect these start-ups operations and lead to their survival or closure. It adopts a qualitative approach depending on both primary and secondary data, in-depth interviews conducted with different stakeholders with different roles, and content analysis. The findings cover a list of external and internal best practices that increases the probability of a transportation start-up\u27s survival. The researcher recommends as well some means of Public Private Partnership that can be implemented in the transportation domain in Cairo, Egypt that might support these start-up\u27s operations. The research enables the start-ups and the public sector to better understand the possible impacts of liaising with each other to reach a win-win situation for the sake of both the start-ups and the public sector, where the start-ups would operate the business smoothly and at the same time reduce the burden on the public sector as a public transport provider, thus lead to more effective operations
