Understanding friction induced damping in bolted assemblies through explicit transient simulation
The design of joints is seeing increased interest as one of the ways of controlling damping levels in lighter and more ďŹexible aeronautic structures. Damping induced by joint dissipation has been studied for more than a decade, mostly experimentally due to the difďŹculty of simulating large structures with non-linearities. Experimentally ďŹtted meta-models were thus used for damping estimation at design stage without a possible optimization. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that damping estimation using local friction models is feasible and that it can be usable for design. The simulation methodology is based on an explicit Newmark time scheme with model reduction and numerical damping that can be compensated for the modes of interest. Practical simulation times counted in minutes are achieved for detailed models. The illustration on a lap-joint shows how simulations can be used to predict the amplitude dependence of modal damping, answer long standing questions such as âdoes the modeshape change?â or analyze the evolution of pressure ďŹelds during a cycle
Model updating using uncertain experimental modal data
The propagation of parameter uncertainty in structural dynamics has become a feasible method to determine the probabilistic description of the vibration response of industrial scale �nite element models. Though methods for uncertainty propagation have been developed extensively, the quanti�cation of parameter uncertainty has been neglected in the past. But a correct assumption for the parameter variability is essential for the estimation of the uncertain vibration response. This paper shows how to identify model parameter means and covariance matrix from uncertain experimental modal test data. The common gradient based approach from deterministic computational model updating was extended by an equation that accounts for the stochastic part. In detail an inverse approach for the identi�cation of statistical parametric properties will be presented which will be applied on a numerical model of a replica of the GARTEUR SM-AG19 benchmark structure. The uncertain eigenfrequencies and mode shapes have been determined in an extensive experimental modal test campaign where the aircraft structure was tested repeatedly while it was 130 times dis- and reassembled in between each experimental modal analysis
The effects of localized damping on structural response
The effect of localized structural damping on the excitability of higher order normal modes of the large space telescope was investigated. A preprocessor computer program was developed to incorporate Voigt structural joint damping models in a NASTRAN finite-element dynamic model. A postprocessor computer program was developed to select critical modes for low-frequency attitude control problems and for higher frequency fine-stabilization problems. The mode selection is accomplished by ranking the flexible modes based on coefficients for rate gyro, position gyro, and optical sensors, and on image-plane motions due to sinusoidal or random power spectral density force and torque inputs

Quantification of dynamic excitation potential of pedestrian population crossing footbridges
Due to their slenderness, many modern footbridges may vibrate significantly under pedestrian traffic. Consequently, the vibration serviceability of these structures under human-induced dynamic loading is becoming their governing design criterion. Many current vibration serviceability design guidelines, concerned with prediction of the vibration in the vertical direction, estimate a single response level that corresponds to an "average" person crossing the bridge with the step frequency that matches a footbridge natural frequency. However, different pedestrians have different dynamic excitation potential, and therefore could generate significantly different vibration response of the bridge structure. This paper aims to quantify this potential by estimating the range of structural vibrations (in the vertical direction) that could be induced by different individuals and the probability of occurrence of any particular vibration level. This is done by introducing the inter- and intra-subject variability in the walking force modelling. The former term refers to inability of a pedestrian to induce an exactly the same force with each step while the latter refers to different forces (in terms of their magnitude, frequency and crossing speed) induced by different people. Both types of variability are modelled using the appropriate probability density functions. The probability distributions were then implemented into a framework procedure for vibration response prediction under a single person excitation. Instead of a single response value obtained using currently available design guidelines, this new framework yields a range of possible acceleration responses induced by different people and a distribution function for these responses. The acceleration ranges estimated are then compared with experimental data from two real-life footbridges. The substantial differences in the dynamic response induced by different people are obtained in both the numerical and the experimental results presented. These results therefore confirm huge variability in different people's dynamic potential to excite the structure. The proposed approach for quantifying this variability could be used as a sound basis for development of new probability-based vibration serviceability assessment procedures for pedestrian bridges
System Identification of Constructed Facilities: Challenges and Opportunities Across Hazards
The motivation, success and prevalence of full-scale monitoring of constructed buildings vary
considerably across the hazard of concern (earthquakes, strong winds, etc.), due in part to various
fiscal and life safety motivators. Yet while the challenges of successful deployment and
operation of large-scale monitoring initiatives are significant, they are perhaps dwarfed by the
challenges of data management, interrogation and ultimately system identification. Practical
constraints on everything from sensor density to the availability of measured input has driven the
development of a wide array of system identification and damage detection techniques, which in
many cases become hazard-specific. In this study, the authors share their experiences in fullscale monitoring of buildings across hazards and the associated challenges of system
identification. The study will conclude with a brief agenda for next generation research in the
area of system identification of constructed facilities
