Middleware platform for distributed applications incorporating robots, sensors and the cloud
Cyber-physical systems in the factory of the future
will consist of cloud-hosted software governing an agile
production process executed by autonomous mobile robots
and controlled by analyzing the data from a vast number of
sensors. CPSs thus operate on a distributed production floor
infrastructure and the set-up continuously changes with each
new manufacturing task. In this paper, we present our OSGibased
middleware that abstracts the deployment of servicebased
CPS software components on the underlying distributed
platform comprising robots, actuators, sensors and the cloud.
Moreover, our middleware provides specific support to develop
components based on artificial neural networks, a technique that
recently became very popular for sensor data analytics and robot
actuation. We demonstrate a system where a robot takes actions
based on the input from sensors in its vicinity
Who am I talking with? A face memory for social robots
In order to provide personalized services and to
develop human-like interaction capabilities robots need to rec-
ognize their human partner. Face recognition has been studied
in the past decade exhaustively in the context of security systems
and with significant progress on huge datasets. However, these
capabilities are not in focus when it comes to social interaction
situations. Humans are able to remember people seen for a
short moment in time and apply this knowledge directly in
their engagement in conversation. In order to equip a robot with
capabilities to recall human interlocutors and to provide user-
aware services, we adopt human-human interaction schemes to
propose a face memory on the basis of active appearance models
integrated with the active memory architecture. This paper
presents the concept of the interactive face memory, the applied
recognition algorithms, and their embedding into the robot’s
system architecture. Performance measures are discussed for
general face databases as well as scenario-specific datasets
Connecting YARP to the Web with yarp.js
We present yarp.js, a JavaScript framework enabling robotics networks to interface and interact with external devices by exploiting modern Web communication protocols. By connecting a YARP server module with a browser client on any external device, yarp.js allows to access on board sensors using standard Web APIs and stream the acquired data through the yarp.js network without the need for any installation. Communication between YARP modules and yarp.js clients is bi-directional, opening also the possibility for robotics applications to exploit the capabilities of modern browsers to process external data, such as speech synthesis, 3D data visualization, or video streaming to name a few. Yarp.js requires only a browser installed on the client device, allowing for fast and easy deployment of novel applications.
