    Improvements on the bees algorithm for continuous optimisation problems

    This work focuses on the improvements of the Bees Algorithm in order to enhance the algorithm’s performance especially in terms of convergence rate. For the first enhancement, a pseudo-gradient Bees Algorithm (PG-BA) compares the fitness as well as the position of previous and current bees so that the best bees in each patch are appropriately guided towards a better search direction after each consecutive cycle. This method eliminates the need to differentiate the objective function which is unlike the typical gradient search method. The improved algorithm is subjected to several numerical benchmark test functions as well as the training of neural network. The results from the experiments are then compared to the standard variant of the Bees Algorithm and other swarm intelligence procedures. The data analysis generally confirmed that the PG-BA is effective at speeding up the convergence time to optimum. Next, an approach to avoid the formation of overlapping patches is proposed. The Patch Overlap Avoidance Bees Algorithm (POA-BA) is designed to avoid redundancy in search area especially if the site is deemed unprofitable. This method is quite similar to Tabu Search (TS) with the POA-BA forbids the exact exploitation of previously visited solutions along with their corresponding neighbourhood. Patches are not allowed to intersect not just in the next generation but also in the current cycle. This reduces the number of patches materialise in the same peak (maximisation) or valley (minimisation) which ensures a thorough search of the problem landscape as bees are distributed around the scaled down area. The same benchmark problems as PG-BA were applied against this modified strategy to a reasonable success. Finally, the Bees Algorithm is revised to have the capability of locating all of the global optimum as well as the substantial local peaks in a single run. These multi-solutions of comparable fitness offers some alternatives for the decision makers to choose from. The patches are formed only if the bees are the fittest from different peaks by using a hill-valley mechanism in this so called Extended Bees Algorithm (EBA). This permits the maintenance of diversified solutions throughout the search process in addition to minimising the chances of getting trap. This version is proven beneficial when tested with numerous multimodal optimisation problems

    Labor induction is defined as the artificial stimulation of uterine contractions for the purpose of vaginal birth. Induction is prescribed for medical and elective reasons. Success in labor induction procedures is related to vaginal delivery. Cesarean section is one of the potential risks of labor induction as it occurs in about 20% of the inductions. A ripe cervix (soft and distensible) is needed for a successful labor. During the ripening cervical, tissues experience micro structural changes: collagen becomes disorganized and water content increases. These changes will affect the interaction between cervical tissues and sound waves during ultrasound transvaginal scanning and will be perceived as gray level intensity variations in the echographic image. Texture analysis can be used to analyze these variations and provide a means to evaluate cervical ripening in a non-invasive way

    Intelligent Processing in Wireless Communications Using Particle Swarm Based Methods

    There are a lot of optimization needs in the research and design of wireless communica- tion systems. Many of these optimization problems are Nondeterministic Polynomial (NP) hard problems and could not be solved well. Many of other non-NP-hard optimization problems are combinatorial and do not have satisfying solutions either. This dissertation presents a series of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based search and optimization algorithms that solve open research and design problems in wireless communications. These problems are either avoided or solved approximately before. PSO is a bottom-up approach for optimization problems. It imposes no conditions on the underlying problem. Its simple formulation makes it easy to implement, apply, extend and hybridize. The algorithm uses simple operators like adders, and multipliers to travel through the search space and the process requires just five simple steps. PSO is also easy to control because it has limited number of parameters and is less sensitive to parameters than other swarm intelligence algorithms. It is not dependent on initial points and converges very fast. Four types of PSO based approaches are proposed targeting four different kinds of problems in wireless communications. First, we use binary PSO and continuous PSO together to find optimal compositions of Gaussian derivative pulses to form several UWB pulses that not only comply with the FCC spectrum mask, but also best exploit the avail- able spectrum and power. Second, three different PSO based algorithms are developed to solve the NLOS/LOS channel differentiation, NLOS range error mitigation and multilateration problems respectively. Third, a PSO based search method is proposed to find optimal orthogonal code sets to reduce the inter carrier interference effects in an frequency redundant OFDM system. Fourth, a PSO based phase optimization technique is proposed in reducing the PAPR of an frequency redundant OFDM system. The PSO based approaches are compared with other canonical solutions for these communication problems and showed superior performance in many aspects. which are confirmed by analysis and simulation results provided respectively.     Application of spiking neural networks and the bees algorithm to control chart pattern recognition

    Statistical process control (SPC) is a method for improving the quality of products. Control charting plays a most important role in SPC. SPC control charts arc used for monitoring and detecting unnatural process behaviour. Unnatural patterns in control charts indicate unnatural causes for variations. Control chart pattern recognition is therefore important in SPC. Past research shows that although certain types of charts, such as the CUSUM chart, might have powerful detection ability, they lack robustness and do not function automatically. In recent years, neural network techniques have been applied to automatic pattern recognition. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) belong to the third generation of artificial neural networks, with spiking neurons as processing elements. In SNNs, time is an important feature for information representation and processing. This thesis proposes the application of SNN techniques to control chart pattern recognition. It is designed to present an analysis of the existing learning algorithms of SNN for pattern recognition and to explain how and why spiking neurons have more computational power in comparison to the previous generation of neural networks. This thesis focuses on the architecture and the learning procedure of the network. Four new learning algorithms arc presented with their specific architecture: Spiking Learning Vector Quantisation (S-LVQ), Enhanced-Spiking Learning Vector Quantisation (NS-LVQ), S-LVQ with Bees and NS-LVQ with Bees. The latter two algorithms employ a new intelligent swarm-based optimisation called the Bees Algorithm to optimise the LVQ pattern recognition networks. Overall, the aim of the research is to develop a simple architecture for the proposed network as well as to develop a network that is efficient for application to control chart pattern recognition.
