Editorial -Special issue on adaptive multimedia computing
In recent years, there is an emerging research area in multimedia computing, with the increasing number of related work in scalable video, adaptive multimedia documents, adaptive multimedia services, to name just a few. This new trend comes about partly due to the increasing use of mobile media devices where media requirements could change among users and devices and at different times of reception or presentation, and partly due to the changing network conditions, where best-effort service is the general practice. Any change in Quality of Services (QoS) could imply a change in the delivery or scheduling of media contents. To complicate the matter, user interruptions or requirement changes during the communication process could also occur; for example, a user may not be satisfied with the current media quality and decide an upgrade in real time. The status quo is that this new research paradigm is beginning to take shape while no effort has been made to draw a roadmap for it. Improving students motivation by means of multimedia
The studentâs motivation is one of the most actual problems in the universities. One of many reasons for increased number of cases for low-level student motivation is that there are many more students in the higher education system with relatively low level of preparation. As a result, because of complex material delivered to students and their low ability to learn quickly, the motivation of students to learn programming and maths can be decreased significantly during educational process. In order to overcome this problem, the means of multimedia can be used in the educational process. The basic idea of proposed approach is to use the PowerPoint presentations, multimedia applications in the teaching process during both lectures and tutorials. The basic material should be accessible by students at any time. In order to do this, the material mentioned above should be published in Internet and intranet. The most complex material is implemented using a lot of animation in the lecture and tutorial material with relatively high frequency of repetition. It can be noted that in some cases the students become more motivated, once they understand the basic idea. The accessibility of material and its possibility to repeat it a lot of time have increased the level of studentâs knowledge gained and have improved their motivation
Development of multiple media documents
Development of documents in multiple media involves activities in three different
fields, the technical, the discoursive and the procedural. The major development problems of
artifact complexity, cognitive processes, design basis and working context are located where these
fields overlap. Pending the emergence of a unified approach to design, any method must allow for
development at the three levels of discourse structure, media disposition and composition, and
presentation. Related work concerned with generalised discourse structures, structured
documents, production methods for existing multiple media artifacts, and hypertext design offer
some partial forms of assistance at different levels. Desirable characteristics of a multimedia
design method will include three phases of production, a variety of possible actions with media
elements, an underlying discoursive structure, and explicit comparates for review
Modelling Reactive Multimedia: Design and Authoring
Multimedia document authoring is a multifaceted activity, and authoring tools tend to concentrate on a restricted set of the activities involved in the creation of a multimedia artifact. In particular, a distinction may be drawn between the design and the implementation of a multimedia artifact.
This paper presents a comparison of three different authoring paradigms, based on the common case study of a simple interactive animation. We present details of its implementation using the three different authoring tools, MCF, Fran and SMIL 2.0, and we discuss the conclusions that may be drawn from our comparison of the three approaches
