Multiphase induction motor drives - a technology status review
The area of multiphase variable-speed motor drives in general and multiphase induction motor drives in particular has experienced a substantial growth since the beginning of this century. Research has been conducted worldwide and numerous interesting developments have been reported in the literature. An attempt is made to provide a detailed overview of the current state-of-the-art in this area. The elaborated aspects include advantages of multiphase induction machines, modelling of multiphase induction machines, basic vector control and direct torque control schemes and PWM control of multiphase voltage source inverters. The authors also provide a detailed survey of the control strategies for five-phase and asymmetrical six-phase induction motor drives, as well as an overview of the approaches to the design of fault tolerant strategies for post-fault drive operation, and a discussion of multiphase multi-motor drives with single inverter supply. Experimental results, collected from various multiphase induction motor drive laboratory rigs, are also included to facilitate the understanding of the drive operatio
The Essential Role and the Continuous Evolution of Modulation Techniques for Voltage-Source Inverters in the Past, Present, and Future Power Electronics
The cost reduction of power-electronic devices, the increase in their reliability, efficiency, and power capability, and lower development times, together with more demanding application requirements, has driven the development of several new inverter topologies recently introduced in the industry, particularly medium-voltage converters. New more complex inverter topologies and new application fields come along with additional control challenges, such as voltage imbalances, power-quality issues, higher efficiency needs, and fault-tolerant operation, which necessarily requires the parallel development of modulation schemes. Therefore, recently, there have been significant advances in the field of modulation of dc/ac converters, which conceptually has been dominated during the last several decades almost exclusively by classic pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods. Evaluation of a dual-T-type converter supplying an open-end winding induction machine
The multilevel inverter is a promising technology compared to two-level inverters in the applications of ac-drives and smart-grid applications. In this paper, a dual-T-type three-level inverters is used to drive an open-end winding induction machine. The Space-Vector Pulse-Width Modulation is selected as a good-performing control strategy to control the dual-inverter. Furthermore, an optimized method is used to select the proper switching state for the new configuration to decrease the converter losses. A comparison between the proposed configuration and the conventional diode clamped converter is made. The proposed drive system is designed and modelled by using Matlab/Simulink. It is shown that the converter can give the same hexagon, wave forms and harmonic spectrum of the five level converter. An optimized switching state selection is used to reduce the converter losses. The advantages and drawbacks of the dual-T-type configuration are discussed. In addition, the harmonic analysis and the loss calculations of the dual-T-type converter are provided and compared to the T-type three-level converter and the conventional five-level diode-clamped-converter
Imposed Switching Frequency Direct Torque Control of Induction Machine Using Five Level Flying Capacitors Inverter
The paper proposes a new control structure for sensorless induction motor drive based on a five-level voltage source inverter (VSI). The output voltages of the five-level VSI can be represented by nine groups. Then, the amplitude and the rotating velocity of the flux vector can be controlled freely. Both fast torque and optimal switching logic can be obtained. The selection is based on the value of the stator flux and the torque. This paper investigates a new control structure focused on controlling switching frequency and torque harmonics contents. These strategies, called ISFDTC, indeed combines harmoniously both these factors, without compromising the excellence of the dynamical performances typically conferred to standard DTC strategies. The validity of the proposed control technique is verified by Matlab/Simulink. Simulation results presented in this paper confirm the validity and feasibility of the proposed control approach and can be tested on experimental setup.Peer reviewe
Direct torque control for dual three-phase induction motor drives
A direct torque control (DTC) strategy for dual three-phase induction motor drives is discussed in this paper. The induction machine has two sets of stator three-phase windings spatially shifted by 30 electrical degrees. The DTC strategy is based on a predictive algorithm and is implemented in a synchronous reference frame aligned with the machine stator flux vector. The advantages of the discussed control strategy are constant inverter switching frequency, good transient and steady-state performance, and low distortion of machine currents with respect to direct self-control (DSC) and other DTC schemes with variable switching frequency. Impact of PWM strategies on RMS current of the DC-link Voltage Capacitor of a dual-three phase drive
The major drawback of usual dual three-phase AC machines, when supplied by a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), is the occurrence of extra harmonic currents which circulate in the stator windings causing additional losses and constraints on the power component. This paper compares dedicated Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) strategies used for controlling a dual three phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous machine supplied by a six-leg VSI. Since the application is intended for low-voltage (48V) mild-hybrid automotive traction, an additional major constraint arises: the compactness of the drive related to the size of the DC-bus capacitor. Thus, the PWM strategy must be chosen by taking into consideration its impact on both, the motor and the RMS value of DC-bus current
New Modulation Technique to Mitigate Common Mode Voltage Effects in Star-Connected Five-Phase AC Drives
Star-connected multiphase AC drives are being considered for electromovility applications such as electromechanical actuators (EMA), where high power density and fault tolerance is demanded. As for three-phase systems, common-mode voltage (CMV) is an issue for multiphase drives. CMV leads to shaft voltages between rotor and stator windings, generating bearing currents which accelerate bearing degradation and produce high electromagnetic interferences (EMI). CMV effects can be mitigated by using appropriate modulation techniques. Thus, this work proposes a new Hybrid PWM algorithm that effectively reduces CMV in five-phase AC electric drives, improving their reliability. All the mathematical background required to understand the proposal, i.e., vector transformations, vector sequences and calculation of analytical expressions for duty cycle determination are detailed. Additionally, practical details that simplify the implementation of the proposal in an FPGA are also included. This technique, HAZSL5M5-PWM, extends the linear range of the AZSL5M5-PWM modulation, providing a full linear range. Optimal Modeled Six-Phase Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation Method for Stator Voltage Harmonic Suppression
Dual Y shift 30 six-phase motors are expected to be extensively applied in high-power yet energy-effective fields, and a harmonic-suppressing control strategy plays a vital role in extending their prominent features of low losses and ultra-quiet operation. Aiming at the suppression of harmonic voltages, this paper proposes a six-phase space vector pulse width modulation method based on an optimization model, namely OM-SVPWM. First, four adjacent large vectors are employed in each of 12 sectors on a fundamental sub-plane. Second, the optimization model is constructed to intelligently determine activation durations of the four vectors, where its objective function aims to minimize the synthesis result on a harmonic sub-plane, and its constraint condition is that the synthesis result on the fundamental sub-plane satisfies a reference vector. Finally, to meet the real-time requirement, optimum solutions are obtained by using general central path following algorithm (GCPFA). Simulation and experiment results prove that, the OM-SVPWM performs around 37% better than a state-of-the-art competitive SVPWM in terms of harmonics suppression, which promise the proposed OM-SVPWM conforms to the energy-effective direction in actual engineering applications.Peer reviewe
Feed-forward Space Vector Modulation for Single-Phase Multilevel Cascade Converters with any DC voltage ratio
Modulation techniques for multilevel converters
can create distorted output voltages and currents if the DC link
voltages are unbalanced. This situation can be avoided if the
instantaneous DC voltage error is not taken into account in the
modulation process. This paper proposes a feed-forward space
vector modulation method for a single-phase multilevel cascade
converter. Using this modulation technique, the modulated output
voltage of the power converter always generates the reference
determined by the controller even in worst case voltage unbalance
conditions. In addition the possibility of optimizing the DC
voltage ratio between the H-bridges of the power converter is
introduced. Experimental results from a 5kVA prototype are
presented in order to validate the proposed modulation technique
