    Neuroinspired unsupervised learning and pruning with subquantum CBRAM arrays.

    Resistive RAM crossbar arrays offer an attractive solution to minimize off-chip data transfer and parallelize on-chip computations for neural networks. Here, we report a hardware/software co-design approach based on low energy subquantum conductive bridging RAM (CBRAM®) devices and a network pruning technique to reduce network level energy consumption. First, we demonstrate low energy subquantum CBRAM devices exhibiting gradual switching characteristics important for implementing weight updates in hardware during unsupervised learning. Then we develop a network pruning algorithm that can be employed during training, different from previous network pruning approaches applied for inference only. Using a 512 kbit subquantum CBRAM array, we experimentally demonstrate high recognition accuracy on the MNIST dataset for digital implementation of unsupervised learning. Our hardware/software co-design approach can pave the way towards resistive memory based neuro-inspired systems that can autonomously learn and process information in power-limited settings

    NPLDA: A Deep Neural PLDA Model for Speaker Verification

    The state-of-art approach for speaker verification consists of a neural network based embedding extractor along with a backend generative model such as the Probabilistic Linear Discriminant Analysis (PLDA). In this work, we propose a neural network approach for backend modeling in speaker recognition. The likelihood ratio score of the generative PLDA model is posed as a discriminative similarity function and the learnable parameters of the score function are optimized using a verification cost. The proposed model, termed as neural PLDA (NPLDA), is initialized using the generative PLDA model parameters. The loss function for the NPLDA model is an approximation of the minimum detection cost function (DCF). The speaker recognition experiments using the NPLDA model are performed on the speaker verificiation task in the VOiCES datasets as well as the SITW challenge dataset. In these experiments, the NPLDA model optimized using the proposed loss function improves significantly over the state-of-art PLDA based speaker verification system.Comment: Published in Odyssey 2020, the Speaker and Language Recognition Workshop (VOiCES Special Session).     FPGA based reconfigurable body area network using Nios II and uClinux

    This research is focused on identifying an appropriate design for a reconfigurable Body Area Network (BAN). In order to investigate the benefits and drawbacks of the proposed design, a BAN system prototype was built. This system consists of two distinct node types: a slave node and a master node. These nodes communicate using ZigBee radio transceivers. The microcontroller-based slave node acquires sensor data and transmits digitized samples to the master node. The master node is FPGA-based and runs uClinux on a soft-core microcontroller. The purpose of the master node is to receive, process and store digitized sensor data. In order to verify the operation of the BAN system prototype and demonstrate reconfigurability, a specific application was required. Pattern recognition in electrocardiogram (ECG) data was the application used in this work and the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database was used as the known data source for verification. A custom test platform was designed and built for the purpose of injecting data from the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database into the BAN system. The BAN system designed and built in this work demonstrates the ability to record raw ECG data, detect R-peaks, calculate and record R-R intervals, detect premature ventricular and atrial contractions. As this thesis will identify, many aspects of this BAN system were designed to be highly reconfigurable allowing it to be used for a wide range of BAN applications, in addition to pattern recognition of ECG data

    Linear-time Online Action Detection From 3D Skeletal Data Using Bags of Gesturelets

    Sliding window is one direct way to extend a successful recognition system to handle the more challenging detection problem. While action recognition decides only whether or not an action is present in a pre-segmented video sequence, action detection identifies the time interval where the action occurred in an unsegmented video stream. Sliding window approaches for action detection can however be slow as they maximize a classifier score over all possible sub-intervals. Even though new schemes utilize dynamic programming to speed up the search for the optimal sub-interval, they require offline processing on the whole video sequence. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for online action detection based on 3D skeleton sequences extracted from depth data. It identifies the sub-interval with the maximum classifier score in linear time. Furthermore, it is invariant to temporal scale variations and is suitable for real-time applications with low latency

    Multi-layer Architecture For Storing Visual Data Based on WCF and Microsoft SQL Server Database

    In this paper we present a novel architecture for storing visual data. Effective storing, browsing and searching collections of images is one of the most important challenges of computer science. The design of architecture for storing such data requires a set of tools and frameworks such as SQL database management systems and service-oriented frameworks. The proposed solution is based on a multi-layer architecture, which allows to replace any component without recompilation of other components. The approach contains five components, i.e. Model, Base Engine, Concrete Engine, CBIR service and Presentation. They were based on two well-known design patterns: Dependency Injection and Inverse of Control. For experimental purposes we implemented the SURF local interest point detector as a feature extractor and KK-means clustering as indexer.
