Automatic Metadata Generation using Associative Networks
In spite of its tremendous value, metadata is generally sparse and
incomplete, thereby hampering the effectiveness of digital information
services. Many of the existing mechanisms for the automated creation of
metadata rely primarily on content analysis which can be costly and
inefficient. The automatic metadata generation system proposed in this article
leverages resource relationships generated from existing metadata as a medium
for propagation from metadata-rich to metadata-poor resources. Because of its
independence from content analysis, it can be applied to a wide variety of
resource media types and is shown to be computationally inexpensive. The
proposed method operates through two distinct phases. Occurrence and
co-occurrence algorithms first generate an associative network of repository
resources leveraging existing repository metadata. Second, using the
associative network as a substrate, metadata associated with metadata-rich
resources is propagated to metadata-poor resources by means of a discrete-form
spreading activation algorithm. This article discusses the general framework
for building associative networks, an algorithm for disseminating metadata
through such networks, and the results of an experiment and validation of the
proposed method using a standard bibliographic dataset
On social networks and collaborative recommendation
Social network systems, like last.fm, play a significant role in Web 2.0, containing large amounts of multimedia-enriched data that are enhanced both by explicit user-provided annotations and implicit aggregated feedback describing the personal preferences of each user. It is also a common tendency for these systems to encourage the creation of virtual networks among their users by allowing them to establish bonds of friendship and thus provide a novel and direct medium for the exchange of data.
We investigate the role of these additional relationships in developing a track recommendation system. Taking into account both the social annotation and friendships inherent in the social graph established among users, items and tags, we created a collaborative recommendation system that effectively adapts to the personal information needs of each user. We adopt the generic framework of Random Walk with Restarts in order to provide with a more natural and efficient way to represent social networks.
In this work we collected a representative enough portion of the music social network last.fm, capturing explicitly expressed bonds of friendship of the user as well as social tags. We performed a series of comparison experiments between the Random Walk with Restarts model and a user-based collaborative filtering method using the Pearson Correlation similarity. The results show that the graph model system benefits from the additional information embedded in social knowledge. In addition, the graph model outperforms the standard collaborative filtering method.</p
The state-of-the-art in personalized recommender systems for social networking
With the explosion of Web 2.0 application such as blogs, social and professional networks, and various other types of social media, the rich online information and various new sources of knowledge flood users and hence pose a great challenge in terms of information overload. It is critical to use intelligent agent software systems to assist users in finding the right information from an abundance of Web data. Recommender systems can help users deal with information overload problem efficiently by suggesting items (e.g., information and products) that match users’ personal interests. The recommender technology has been successfully employed in many applications such as recommending films, music, books, etc. The purpose of this report is to give an overview of existing technologies for building personalized recommender systems in social networking environment, to propose a research direction for addressing user profiling and cold start problems by exploiting user-generated content newly available in Web 2.0
Collaborative Deep Learning for Recommender Systems
Collaborative filtering (CF) is a successful approach commonly used by many
recommender systems. Conventional CF-based methods use the ratings given to
items by users as the sole source of information for learning to make
recommendation. However, the ratings are often very sparse in many
applications, causing CF-based methods to degrade significantly in their
recommendation performance. To address this sparsity problem, auxiliary
information such as item content information may be utilized. Collaborative
topic regression (CTR) is an appealing recent method taking this approach which
tightly couples the two components that learn from two different sources of
information. Nevertheless, the latent representation learned by CTR may not be
very effective when the auxiliary information is very sparse. To address this
problem, we generalize recent advances in deep learning from i.i.d. input to
non-i.i.d. (CF-based) input and propose in this paper a hierarchical Bayesian
model called collaborative deep learning (CDL), which jointly performs deep
representation learning for the content information and collaborative filtering
for the ratings (feedback) matrix. Extensive experiments on three real-world
datasets from different domains show that CDL can significantly advance the
state of the art
Visualizing recommendations to support exploration, transparency and controllability
Research on recommender systems has traditionally focused on the development of algorithms to improve accuracy of recommendations. So far, little research has been done to enable user interaction with such systems as a basis to support exploration and control by end users. In this paper, we present our research on the use of information visualization techniques to interact with recommender systems. We investigated how information visualization can improve user understanding of the typically black-box rationale behind recommendations in order to increase their perceived relevance and meaning and to support exploration and user involvement in the recommendation process. Our study has been performed using TalkExplorer, an interactive visualization tool developed for attendees of academic conferences. The results of user studies performed at two conferences allowed us to obtain interesting insights to enhance user interfaces that integrate recommendation technology. More specifically, effectiveness and probability of item selection both increase when users are able to explore and interrelate multiple entities - i.e. items bookmarked by users, recommendations and tags. Social Tag-Based Recommendation Services
Recommendation systems are a staple of Web 2.0. Sites such as Amazon.com and Netflix, for example, use recommendation systems to suggest products to customers. Currently, most of these systems involve looking at numerical ratings to judge user interest. These methods are effective, but they do not take into account the context in which the users rated the objects. This project aims to develop a tag based recommendation system to take context into account. Popular websites such as del.icio.us and Citeulike.org already use this data model, but do not generate recommendations from it.The specific goal is to recommend academic papers to researchers
