    Integration of Linux TCP and Simulation: Verification, Validation and Application

    Network simulator has been acknowledged as one of the most flexible means in studying and developing protocol as it allows virtually endless numbers of simulated network environments to be setup and protocol of interest to be fine-tuned without requiring any real-world complicated and costly network experiment. However, depending on researchers, the same protocol of interest can be developed in different ways and different implementations may yield the outcomes that do not accurately capture the dynamics of the real protocol. In the last decade, TCP, the protocol on which the Internet is based, has been extensively studied in order to study and reevaluate its performance particularly when TCP based applications and services are deployed in an emerging Next Generation Network (NGN) and Next Generation Internet (NGI). As a result, to understand the realistic interaction of TCP with new types of networks and technologies, a combination of a real-world TCP and a network simulator seems very essential. This work presents an integration of real-world TCP implementation of Linux TCP/IP network stack into a network simulator, called INET. Moreover, verification and validation of the integrated Linux TCP are performed within INET framework to ensure the validity of the integration. The results clearly confirm that the integrated Linux TCP displays reasonable and consistent dynamics with respect to the behaviors of the real-world Linux TCP. Finally, to demonstrate the application of the INET with Linux TCP extension, algorithms of other Linux TCP variants and their dynamic over a large-bandwidth long-delay network are briefly presented

    TCP FTAT (Fast Transmit Adaptive Transmission): a New End-To-End Congestion Control Algorithm

    Congestion Control in TCP is the algorithm that controls allocation of network resources for a number of competing users sharing a network. The nature of computer networks, which can be described from the TCP protocol perspective as unknown resources for unknown traffic of users, means that the functionality of the congestion control algorithm in TCP requires explicit feedback from the network on which it operates. Unfortunately this is not the way it works with TCP, as one of the fundamental principles of the TCP protocol is to be end-to-end, in order to be able to operate on any network, which can consist of hundreds of routers and hundreds of links with varying bandwidth and capacities. This fact requires the Congestion Control algorithm to be adaptive by nature, to adapt to the network environment under any given circumstances and to obtain the required feedback implicitly through observation and measurements. In this thesis we propose a new TCP end-to-end congestion control algorithm that provides performance improvements over existing TCP congestion control algorithms in computer networks in general, and an even greater improvement in wireless and/or high bandwidth- delay product network

    ResTP: A Configurable and Adaptable Multipath Transport Protocol for Future Internet Resilience

    Motivated by the shortcomings of common transport protocols, e.g., TCP, UDP, and MPTCP, in modern networking and the belief that a general-purpose transport-layer protocol, which can operate efficiently over diverse network environments while being able to provide desired services for various application types, we design a new transport protocol, ResTP. The rapid advancement of networking technology and use paradigms is continually supporting new applications. The configurable and adaptable multipath-capable ResTP is not only distinct from the standard protocols by its flexibility in satisfying the requirements of different traffic classes considering the characteristics of the underlying networks, but by its emphasis on providing resilience. Resilience is an essential property that is unfortunately missing in the current Internet. In this dissertation, we present the design of ResTP, including the services that it supports and the set of algorithms that implement each service. We also discuss our modular implementation of ResTP in the open-source network simulator ns-3. Finally, the protocol is simulated under various network scenarios, and the results are analyzed in comparison with conventional protocols such as TCP, UDP, and MPTCP to demonstrate that ResTP is a promising new transport-layer protocol providing resilience in the Future Internet (FI)

    Virtual Satellite Network Simulator (VSNeS) - A novel engine to evaluate satellite networks over virtual infrastructure and networks

    Space has been populated by a wide range of satellite systems from governmental and private space entities. Monolithic satellites have been ruling it by providing a custom design that accomplishes a specific mission. Nevertheless, novel user demands emerged have required global coverage, low revisit time, and ubiquitous service. The possibility to integrate in-orbit infrastructure to support current communications systems has been discussed persistently during the last years. Specifically, the concept of deploying networks composed of aircraft and spacecraft (creating the so-called Non-Terrestrial Networks), has emerged as a potential architecture to satisfy this new demand. This novel concept has enabled to investigate mobile technologies in space infrastructure. For example, this is the case of the Software-Defined Satellite, which aims at managing in-orbit infrastructure by using Software-Defined Network techniques. These novel concepts pose multiple challenges which dedicated developments shall address. Likewise, specific equipment and simulation environments shall support them. Currently, open source satellite network emulators have certain limitations or are not easily accessible. This project aims at presenting the Virtual Satellite Network Simulator, a novel simulation engine capable to represent satellites as well as ground nodes in virtual machines and deploy a virtual network that depicts the channel effects and dynamics. VSNeS has been generated from different modules, that thanks to the joint work is able to generate the virtualization. First of all, a Python3 program has been developed, which works as a manager and is responsible for running the rest of the modules according to the virtualized scenario. Furthermore, Kernel-based Virtual Machine has been implemented for the execution of the virtual machines. The channel management is done with the NetEm emulator. Finally, a graphical user interface is delivered by Cesium. This dissertation presents formally a preliminary design with the essential steps to select each technology. Then, the networking design is also discussed. Different tests are also shown in order to verify the correct functioning of the tool. In addition, tests about the performance of the final release have been performed. The program has been tested with the following protocols in different realistic scenarios: TCP, UDP, and ICMP. This allowed us to verify the correct operation of the program, checking the delays and channel losses. Moreover, it is empirically demonstrated that some protocols are not functional for geostationary satellites, due to the long latency caused by the large distances

    Trustworthiness Mechanisms for Long-Distance Networks in Internet of Things

    Aquesta tesi té com a objectiu aconseguir un intercanvi de dades fiable en un entorn hostil millorant-ne la confiabilitat mitjançant el disseny d'un model complet que tingui en compte les diferents capes de confiabilitat i mitjançant la implementació de les contramesures associades al model. La tesi se centra en el cas d'ús del projecte SHETLAND-NET, amb l'objectiu de desplegar una arquitectura d'Internet de les coses (IoT) híbrida amb comunicacions LoRa i d'ona ionosfèrica d'incidència gairebé vertical (NVIS) per oferir un servei de telemetria per al monitoratge del “permafrost” a l'Antàrtida. Per complir els objectius de la tesi, en primer lloc, es fa una revisió de l'estat de l'art en confiabilitat per proposar una definició i l'abast del terme de confiança. Partint d'aquí, es dissenya un model de confiabilitat de quatre capes, on cada capa es caracteritza pel seu abast, mètrica per a la quantificació de la confiabilitat, contramesures per a la millora de la confiabilitat i les interdependències amb les altres capes. Aquest model permet el mesurament i l'avaluació de la confiabilitat del cas d'ús a l'Antàrtida. Donades les condicions hostils i les limitacions de la tecnologia utilitzada en aquest cas d’ús, es valida el model i s’avalua el servei de telemetria a través de simulacions en Riverbed Modeler. Per obtenir valors anticipats de la confiabilitat esperada, l'arquitectura proposada es modela per avaluar els resultats amb diferents configuracions previ al seu desplegament en proves de camp. L'arquitectura proposada passa per tres principals iteracions de millora de la confiabilitat. A la primera iteració, s'explora l'ús de mecanismes de consens i gestió de la confiança social per aprofitar la redundància de sensors. En la segona iteració, s’avalua l’ús de protocols de transport moderns per al cas d’ús antàrtic. L’última iteració d’aquesta tesi avalua l’ús d’una arquitectura de xarxa tolerant al retard (DTN) utilitzant el Bundle Protocol (BP) per millorar la confiabilitat del sistema. Finalment, es presenta una prova de concepte (PoC) amb maquinari real que es va desplegar a la campanya antàrtica 2021-2022, descrivint les proves de camp funcionals realitzades a l'Antàrtida i Catalunya.Esta tesis tiene como objetivo lograr un intercambio de datos confiable en un entorno hostil mejorando su confiabilidad mediante el diseño de un modelo completo que tenga en cuenta las diferentes capas de confiabilidad y mediante la implementación de las contramedidas asociadas al modelo. Finalmente, se presenta una prueba de concepto (PoC) con hardware real que se desplegó en la campaña antártica 2021-2022, describiendo las pruebas de campo funcionales realizadas en la Antártida y Cataluña.This thesis aims at achieving reliable data exchange over a harsh environment by improving its trustworthiness through the design of a complete model that takes into account the different layers of trustworthiness and through the implementation of the model’s associated countermeasures. The thesis focuses on the use case of the SHETLAND-NET project, aiming to deploy a hybrid Internet of Things (IoT) architecture with LoRa and Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) communications to offer a telemetry service for permafrost monitoring in Antarctica. To accomplish the thesis objectives, first, a review of the state of the art in trustworthiness is carried out to propose a definition and scope of the trustworthiness term. From these, a four-layer trustworthiness model is designed, with each layer characterized by its scope, metric for trustworthiness accountability, countermeasures for trustworthiness improvement, and the interdependencies with the other layers. This model enables trustworthiness accountability and assessment of the Antarctic use case. Given the harsh conditions and the limitations of the use technology in this use case, the model is validated and the telemetry service is evaluated through simulations in Riverbed Modeler. To obtain anticipated values of the expected trustworthiness, the proposal has been modeled to evaluate the performance with different configurations prior to its deployment in the field. The proposed architecture goes through three major iterations of trustworthiness improvement. In the first iteration, using social trust management and consensus mechanisms is explored to take advantage of sensor redundancy. In the second iteration, the use of modern transport protocols is evaluated for the Antarctic use case. The final iteration of this thesis assesses using a Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) architecture using the Bundle Protocol (BP) to improve the system’s trustworthiness. Finally, a Proof of Concept (PoC) with real hardware that was deployed in the 2021-2022 Antarctic campaign is presented, describing the functional tests performed in Antarctica and Catalonia

    Nowadays, mathematical methods of systems and network monitoring, modeling, simulation, and performance, dependability and reliability analysis constitute the foundation of quantitative evaluation methods with regard to software-defined next-generation networks and advanced cloud computing systems. Considering the application of the underlying methodologies in engineering practice, these sophisticated techniques provide the basis in many different areas. The GI/ITG Technical Committee “Measurement, Modelling and Evaluation of Computing Systems“ (MMB) and its members have investigated corresponding research topics and initiated a series of MMB conferences and workshops over the last decades. Its 9th GI/ITG Workshop MMBnet 2017 „Leistungs-, Verlässlichkeits- und Zuverlässigkeitsbewertung von Kommunikationsnetzen und Verteilten Systemen“ was held at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), Germany, on September 14, 2017. The proceedings of MMBnet 2017 summarize the contributions of one invited talk and four contributed papers of young researchers. They deal with current research issues in next-generation networks, IP-based real-time communication systems, and new application architectures and intend to stimulate the reader‘s future research in these vital areas of modern information society
