'Our Darker Purpose' : the calculus of desire in King Lear : a Girardian reading
Rene Girard has always seen in Shakespeare's work a supreme example of his mimetic theory applied with genius in a dramatic context. He sees in King Lear a kind of summa which brings to 'a sharp focus . .. the mimetic vision.' Using key Girardian concepts like mimetic desire and rivalry, the crisis of Degree, sacred violence, and the victimage mechanism as hermeneutical tools, and applying them rigorously and systematically to the text may yieldfresh and illuminating insights into one of the greatest tragedies of Shakespeare.peer-reviewe
Combining Algebra and Higher-Order Types
We study the higher-order rewrite/equational proof systems obtained by adding the simply typed lambda calculus to algebraic rewrite/equational proof systems. We show that if a many-sorted algebraic rewrite system has the Church-Rosser property, then the corresponding higher-order rewrite system which adds simply typed Ăź-reduction has the Church-Rosser property too. This result is relevant to parallel implementations of functional programming languages.
We also show that provability in the higher-order equational proof system obtained by adding the simply typed ß and η axioms to some many-sorted algebraic proof system is effectively reducible to provability in that algebraic proof system. This effective reduction also establishes transformations between higher-order and algebraic equational proofs, transformations which can be useful in automated deduction

This study seeks to alter our understanding of Keller’s realism by problematizing the act of reading within fiction. The story of reading in Keller’s fiction is a self-conscious meditation on the schism between life and its literary representation—and it emphasizes the incapacity of that representation to actually and substantially influence the life it is based on. This has consequences for the didactic writer. The act of reading here generally involves a collision between fiction and its other and a move (or tragic failure to move) toward an acceptance and affirmation of the non-correspondence between life and literature, a process that renders moral didacticism a quixotic project. This position runs counter to the prevailing view of Keller as a consciously didactic author who tried to create a credible copy of reality in order to revise and repair the real world by inspiring readers to make the depicted improvements in their nonfictional universe
