    A New Buffer and Energy Based Scheduling Scheme for Supporting QoS in MANETs

    Today, the original IEEE 802.11 standard has several problems in providing Quality of Service in MANETs. A single FIFO queue is used in best effort manner and it does not support QoS. The upcoming IEEE 802.11e was drafted to overcome these drawbacks. In this paper we describe a new multiple queuing system with an adaptive scheduling taking into account the states of buffers and energy consumption in a mobile ad hoc network. The proposed scheduling scheme uses dynamic weights for each queue. We study the performance of this scheme and compare it with the original IEEE 802.11b and the upcoming IEEE 802.11e. We show through simulations that the proposed buffer and energy based scheduling scheme improves overall end-to-end throughput, and gives better results than the original 802.11b and the Enhanced Distributed Coordination Function (EDCF), in terms of delay and total received and lost packets, as well as support service differentiation over multi-hop ad hoc networks

    Optimization and Performance Analysis of High Speed Mobile Access Networks

    The end-to-end performance evaluation of high speed broadband mobile access networks is the main focus of this work. Novel transport network adaptive flow control and enhanced congestion control algorithms are proposed, implemented, tested and validated using a comprehensive High speed packet Access (HSPA) system simulator. The simulation analysis confirms that the aforementioned algorithms are able to provide reliable and guaranteed services for both network operators and end users cost-effectively. Further, two novel analytical models one for congestion control and the other for the combined flow control and congestion control which are based on Markov chains are designed and developed to perform the aforementioned analysis efficiently compared to time consuming detailed system simulations. In addition, the effects of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) transport network (S1and X2 interfaces) on the end user performance are investigated and analysed by introducing a novel comprehensive MAC scheduling scheme and a novel transport service differentiation model

    A New Framework For Qos Provisioning In Wireless Lans Using The P-persistent Mac Protocol

    The support of multimedia traffic over IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs) has recently received considerable attention. This dissertation has proposed a new framework that provides efficient channel access, service differentiation and statistical QoS guarantees in the enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) protocol of IEEE 802.11e. In the first part of the dissertation, the new framework to provide QoS support in IEEE 802.11e is presented. The framework uses three independent components, namely, a core MAC layer, a scheduler, and an admission control. The core MAC layer concentrates on the channel access mechanism to improve the overall system efficiency. The scheduler provides service differentiation according to the weights assigned to each Access Category (AC). The admission control provides statistical QoS guarantees. The core MAC layer developed in this dissertation employs a P-Persistent based MAC protocol. A weight-based fair scheduler to obtain throughput service differentiation at each node has been used. In wireless LANs (WLANs), the MAC protocol is the main element that determines the efficiency of sharing the limited communication bandwidth of the wireless channel. In the second part of the dissertation, analytical Markov chain models for the P-Persistent 802.11 MAC protocol under unsaturated load conditions with heterogeneous loads are developed. The Markov models provide closed-form formulas for calculating the packet service time, the packet end-to-end delay, and the channel capacity in the unsaturated load conditions. The accuracy of the models has been validated by extensive NS2 simulation tests and the models are shown to give accurate results. In the final part of the dissertation, the admission control mechanism is developed and evaluated. The analytical model for P-Persistent 802.11 is used to develop a measurement-assisted model-based admission control. The proposed admission control mechanism uses delay as an admission criterion. Both distributed and centralized admission control schemes are developed and the performance results show that both schemes perform very efficiently in providing the QoS guarantees. Since the distributed admission scheme control does not have a complete state information of the WLAN, its performance is generally inferior to the centralized admission control scheme. The detailed performance results using the NS2 simulator have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Compared to 802.11e EDCA, the scheduler consistently achieved the desired throughput differentiation and easy tuning. The core MAC layer achieved better delays in terms of channel access, average packet service time and end-to-end delay. It also achieved higher system throughput than EDCA for any given service differentiation ratio. The admission control provided the desired statistical QoS guarantees

    On IP over WDM burst-switched long haul and metropolitan area networks

    The IP over Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) network is a natural evolution ushered in by the phenomenal advances in networking technologies and technical breakthroughs in optical communications, fueled by the increasing demand in the reduction of operation costs and the network management complexity. The unprecedented bandwidth provisioning capability and the multi-service supportability of the WDM technology, in synergy with the data-oriented internetworking mechanisms, facilitates a common shared infrastructure for the Next Generation Internet (NGJ). While NGI targets to perform packet processing directly on the optical transport layer, a smooth evolution is critical to success. Intense research has been conducted to design the new generation optical networks that retain the advantages of packet-oriented transport prototypes while rendering elastic network resource utilization and graded levels of service. This dissertation is focused on the control architecture, enabling technologies, and performance analysis of the WDM burst-switched long haul and Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs). Theoretical analysis and simulation results are reported to demonstrate the system performance and efficiency of proposed algorithms. A novel transmission mechanism, namely, the Forward Resource Reservation (ERR) mechanism, is proposed to reduce the end-to-end delay for an Optical Burst Switching (OBS)-based IP over WDM system. The ERR scheme adopts a Linear Predictive Filter and an aggressive reservation strategy for data burst length prediction and resource reservation, respectively, and is extended to facilitate Quality of Service (QoS) differentiation at network edges. The ERR scheme improves the real-time communication services for applications with time constraints without deleterious system costs. The aggressive strategy for channel holding time reservations is proposed. Specifically, two algorithms, the success probability-driven (SPD) and the bandwidth usage-driven (BUD) ones, are proposed for resource reservations in the FRRenabled scheme. These algorithms render explicit control on the latency reduction improvement and bandwidth usage efficiency, respectively, both of which are important figures of performance metrics. The optimization issue for the FRR-enabled system is studied based on two disciplines - addressing the static and dynamic models targeting different desired objectives (in terms of algorithm efficiency and system performance), and developing a \u27\u27crank back\u27\u27 based signaling mechanism to provide bandwidth usage efficiency. The proposed mechanisms enable the network nodes to make intelligent usage of the bandwidth resources. In addition, a new control architecture with enhanced address resolution protocol (E-ARP), burst-based transmission, and hop-based wavelength allocation is proposed for Ethernet-supported IP over WDM MANs. It is verified, via theoretical analysis and simulation results, that the E-ARP significantly reduces the call setup latency and the transmission requirements associated with the address probing procedures; the burst-based transport mechanism improves the network throughput and resource utilization; and the hop-based wavelength allocation algorithm provides bandwidth multiplexing with fairness and high scalability. The enhancement of the Ethernet services, in tandem with the innovative mechanisms in the WDM domain, facilitates a flexible and efficient integration, thus making the new generation optical MAN optimized for the scalable, survivable, and IP-dominated network at gigabit speed possible

    Quality Of Service Provisioning Scheme For Real-Time Applications in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network

    This thesis presents a novel quality of service (QoS) provisioning scheme for realtime applications in IEEE 802.1 1e wireless local area networks (WLAN). The emerging 802.1 1e standard is tackling the exploding volume of traffic in WLANs with a long -term solution based on QoS-architectures. QoS delivers predictability and consistency into existing variability of best-effort delivery system offered in internet protocol (IP) and IEEE 802.11 wireless networks. Service differentiation in WLAN networks is achieved by means of assigning packets (from the network layer) to different access categories (AC), a set of fixed medium access control (MAC) level parameters that defines the priority echelon for each AC. Thus real-time applications are assigned higher priority ACs to ensure better service and to ensure that the delay constraints of these applications are promptly dealt with. An algorithm called Slide and Translate (SNT) is proposed for IEEE 802.1 1 WLANs. The SNT adapts contention parameters of individual ACs based on the network load in a basic service set (BSS). SNT is derived from the observations of the success and failures of previously proposed QoS provisioning schemes. The SNT adapts the backoff interval, minimum contention window (CW,,,) and contention offset (CWOffsetto) ensure the QoS constraints for the different ACs are dealt with. To further understand the SNT, a simple mathematical analysis is presented on the inter-AC differentiation characteristics; subsequently, through simulation it is shown that SNT is able to maintain high medium utilisation over a wide range of offered loads while providing a high degree of isolation (in terms of throughput, delay and frame loss) to high priority traffic. Further to this, an extension to the SNT called SNT-AC is proposed in order to achieve efficient end-to-end resource provisioning. SNT-AC uses an admission control algorithm to restrict flows in and out of the BSS. The admission controller resides in the IP layer and makes decision based on the MAC level feedback. The simulation results indicate that the close coupling QoS coordination can ensure both bandwidth and latency to admitted flows by controlling the effective offered load into the BSS. This guarantees high priority ACs protection against overwhelming traffic in a WLAN. Finally a brief discussion on future directions of WLANs and hardware implementation issues conclude the thesis

    On Optimal Service Differentiation in Congested Network Markets

    As Internet applications have become more diverse in recent years, users having heavy demand for online video services are more willing to pay higher prices for better services than light users that mainly use e-mails and instant messages. This encourages the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to explore service differentiations so as to optimize their profits and allocation of network resources. Much prior work has focused on the viability of network service differentiation by comparing with the case of a single-class service. However, the optimal service differentiation for an ISP subject to resource constraints has remained unsolved. In this work, we establish an optimal control framework to derive the analytical solution to an ISP's optimal service differentiation, i.e. the optimal service qualities and associated prices. By analyzing the structures of the solution, we reveal how an ISP should adjust the service qualities and prices in order to meet varying capacity constraints and users' characteristics. We also obtain the conditions under which ISPs have strong incentives to implement service differentiation and whether regulators should encourage such practices

    Optimizing Service Differentiation Scheme with Sized-based Queue Management in DiffServ Networks

    In this paper we introduced Modified Sized-based Queue Management as a dropping scheme that aims to fairly prioritize and allocate more service to VoIP traffic over bulk data like FTP as the former one usually has small packet size with less impact to the network congestion. In the same time, we want to guarantee that this prioritization is fair enough for both traffic types. On the other hand we study the total link delay over the congestive link with the attempt to alleviate this congestion as much as possible at the by function of early congestion notification. Our M-SQM scheme has been evaluated with NS2 experiments to measure the packets received from both and total link-delay for different traffic. The performance evaluation results of M-SQM have been validated and graphically compared with the performance of other three legacy AQMs (RED, RIO, and PI).     Supporting Service Differentiation with Enhancements of the IEEE 802.11 MAC Protocol: Models and Analysis

    As one of the fastest growing wireless access technologies, Wireless LANs must evolve to support adequate degrees of service differentiation. Unfortunately, current WLAN standards like IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) lack this ability. Work is in progress to define an enhanced version capable of supporting QoS for multimedia traffic at the MAC layer. In this paper, we aim at gaining insight into three mechanisms to differentiate among traffic categories, i.e., differentiating the minimum contention window size, the Inter-Frame Spacing (IFS) and the length of the packet payload according to the priority of different traffic categories. We propose an analysis model to compute the throughput and packet transmission delays. In additions, we derive approximations to get simpler but more meaningful relationships among different parameters. Comparisons with discrete-event simulation results show that a very good accuracy of performance evaluation can be achieved by using the proposed analysis model

    Adaptive EDCF: Enhanced service differentiation for IEEE 802.11 wireless ad-hoc networks

    This paper describes an adaptive service differentiation scheme for QoS enhancement in IEEE 802.11 wireless ad-hoc networks. Our approach, called adaptive enhanced distributed coordination function (AEDCF), is derived from the new EDCF introduced in the upcoming IEEE 802.11e standard. Our scheme aims to share the transmission channel efficiently. Relative priorities are provisioned by adjusting the size of the contention window (CW) of each traffic class taking into account both applications requirements and network conditions. We evaluate through simulations the performance of AEDCF and compare it with the EDCF scheme proposed in the 802.11e. Results show that AEDCF outperforms the basic EDCF, especially at high traffic load conditions. Indeed, our scheme increases the medium utilization ratio and reduces for more than 50% the collision rate. While achieving delay differentiation, the overall goodput obtained is up to 25% higher than EDCF. Moreover, the complexity of AEDCF remains similar to the EDCF scheme, enabling the design of cheap implementations
