Implementation of a robotic flexible assembly system

    Get PDF
As part of the Intelligent Task Automation program, a team developed enabling technologies for programmable, sensory controlled manipulation in unstructured environments. These technologies include 2-D/3-D vision sensing and understanding, force sensing and high speed force control, 2.5-D vision alignment and control, and multiple processor architectures. The subsequent design of a flexible, programmable, sensor controlled robotic assembly system for small electromechanical devices is described using these technologies and ongoing implementation and integration efforts. Using vision, the system picks parts dumped randomly in a tray. Using vision and force control, it performs high speed part mating, in-process monitoring/verification of expected results and autonomous recovery from some errors. It is programmed off line with semiautomatic action planning

    Code Generation for Safety-Critical Systems

    Get PDF
International audienceThe number of safety-critical systems in vehicles is rapidly increasing. A few years ago, the failure of a computersystem in a vehicle would in the worst case mean the loss of a function, but in the systems of the future, the wrongreaction to a fault may be a safety hazard for the vehicle’s occupants and other road users

Predictive models for hotel booking cancellation: a semi-automated analysis of the literature

    Get PDF
In reservation-based industries, an accurate booking cancellation forecast is of foremost importance to estimate demand. By combining data science tools and capabilities with human judgement and interpretation, this paper aims to demonstrate how the semiautomatic analysis of the literature can contribute to synthesizing research findings and identify research topics about booking cancellation forecasting. Furthermore, this works aims, by detailing the full experimental procedure of the analysis, to encourage other authors to conduct automated literature analysis as a means to understand current research in their working fields. The data used was obtained through a keyword search in Scopus and Web of Science databases. The methodology presented not only diminishes human bias, but also enhances the fact that data visualisation and text mining techniques facilitate abstraction, expedite analysis, and contribute to the improvement of reviews. Results show that despite the importance of bookings’ cancellation forecast in terms of understanding net demand, improving cancellation, and overbooking policies, further research on the subject is still needed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

An affinity analysis based CIM-to-PIM transformation

    Get PDF
To tackle the problems such as the imperfection and inconsistency in software requirements in traditional Computation Independent Model (CIM) modelling, the low degree of automation as well as the imperfection in the description of Platform Independent Model (PIM) in CIM-to-PIM transforming, in this article, we propose a Business-Process-based CIM modelling method and a CIM-to-PIM transformation approach. Business Process Model is used to express CIM, and UML‘s Sequence Diagram, State Chart Diagram as well as Class Diagram are used to express PIM. Firstly, the users’ requirements are obtained through business process models. We extract use cases from business processes and create use case specifications. A verification mechanism is also added for the use case specification. Secondly, we transform CIMs into PIMs automatically with use case specifications as the inputs as well as combining with use case based thinking, responsibility based thinking and affinity analysis. Finally, by comparing with the methods in other studies, we conclude that methods proposed in this article can ensure model integrity and increase the degree of model transformation automation

Structured development of problem solving methods

This paper, published in one of the top journals in Computer Science, describes the UPML framework for modelling knowledge-based applications, which can be seen as the culmination of over twenty years of research in this area. UPML has shaped the field, providing the intellectual and formal basis for the WSMO framework, which is the cornerstone of current standardization efforts in semantic web services and has attracted over E100M in funding from EU. Since 2001, the Open University itself has received over £3.5M in funding from EU/EPSRC to carry out further research in models of problem solving and semantic web services

    Introduction to IntelliSIM 1.0

    Get PDF
IntelliSIM is a prototype for a new generation of knowledge-based simulation tool that has been developed by the Systems Simulation Laboratory at Arizona State University. This tool is a computer environment that allows non-simulation trained modelers to predict the performance of a manufacturing system for which the necessary data is available. The system provides predictive data on such items as throughput time, queue levels, equipment utilization, reactions to machine failures, etc. With IntelliSIM, the benefits of discrete-event simulation can be exploited without requiring the high level of expertise necessary to successfully conduct a sound simulation study. The approach offered with IntelliSIM is one which will offer substantial savings over currently available simulation tools. This document is Version 1 (1992) of the user manual for the IntelliSIM software
