    A Granular-based Approach for Semisupervised Web Information Labeling

    A key issue when mining web information is the labeling problem: data is abundant on the web but is unlabelled. In this thesis, we address this problem by proposing i) a novel theoretical granular model that structures categorical noun phrase instances as well as semantically related noun phrase pairs from a given corpus representing unstructured web pages with a variant of Tolerance Rough Sets Model (TRSM), ii) a semi-supervised learning algorithm called Tolerant Pattern Learner (TPL) that labels categorical instances as well as relations. TRSM has so far been successfully employed for document retrieval and classification, but not for learning categorical and relational phrases. We use the ontological information from the Never Ending Language Learner (Nell) system. We compared the performance of our algorithm with Coupled Bayesian Sets (CBS) and Coupled Pattern Learner (CPL) algorithms for categorical and relational labeling, respectively.     An Efficient Classification Model using Fuzzy Rough Set Theory and Random Weight Neural Network

    In the area of fuzzy rough set theory (FRST), researchers have gained much interest in handling the high-dimensional data. Rough set theory (RST) is one of the important tools used to pre-process the data and helps to obtain a better predictive model, but in RST, the process of discretization may loss useful information. Therefore, fuzzy rough set theory contributes well with the real-valued data. In this paper, an efficient technique is presented based on Fuzzy rough set theory (FRST) to pre-process the large-scale data sets to increase the efficacy of the predictive model. Therefore, a fuzzy rough set-based feature selection (FRSFS) technique is associated with a Random weight neural network (RWNN) classifier to obtain the better generalization ability. Results on different dataset show that the proposed technique performs well and provides better speed and accuracy when compared by associating FRSFS with other machine learning classifiers (i.e., KNN, Naive Bayes, SVM, decision tree and backpropagation neural network)

    Short Text Classification with Tolerance Near Sets

    Text classification is a classical machine learning application in Natural Language Processing, which aims to assign labels to textual units such as documents, sentences, paragraphs, and queries. Applications of text classification include sentiment classification and news categorization. Sentiment classification identifies the polarity of text such as positive, negative or neutral based on textual features. In this thesis, we implemented a modified form of a tolerance-based algorithm (TSC) to classify sentiment polarities of tweets as well as news categories from text. The TSC algorithm is a supervised algorithm that was designed to perform short text classification with tolerance near sets (TNS). The proposed TSC algorithm uses pre-trained SBERT algorithm vectors for creating tolerance classes. The effectiveness of the TSC algorithm has been demonstrated by testing it on ten well-researched data sets. One of the datasets (Covid-Sentiment) was hand-crafted with tweets from Twitter of opinions related to COVID. Experiments demonstrate that TSC outperforms five classical ML algorithms with one dataset, and is comparable with all other datasets using a weighted F1-score measure.Master of Science in Applied Computer Scienc

    Data mining in manufacturing: a review based on the kind of knowledge

    In modern manufacturing environments, vast amounts of data are collected in database management systems and data warehouses from all involved areas, including product and process design, assembly, materials planning, quality control, scheduling, maintenance, fault detection etc. Data mining has emerged as an important tool for knowledge acquisition from the manufacturing databases. This paper reviews the literature dealing with knowledge discovery and data mining applications in the broad domain of manufacturing with a special emphasis on the type of functions to be performed on the data. The major data mining functions to be performed include characterization and description, association, classification, prediction, clustering and evolution analysis. The papers reviewed have therefore been categorized in these five categories. It has been shown that there is a rapid growth in the application of data mining in the context of manufacturing processes and enterprises in the last 3 years. This review reveals the progressive applications and existing gaps identified in the context of data mining in manufacturing. A novel text mining approach has also been used on the abstracts and keywords of 150 papers to identify the research gaps and find the linkages between knowledge area, knowledge type and the applied data mining tools and techniques

    Click Fraud Detection in Online and In-app Advertisements: A Learning Based Approach

    Click Fraud is the fraudulent act of clicking on pay-per-click advertisements to increase a site’s revenue, to drain revenue from the advertiser, or to inflate the popularity of content on social media platforms. In-app advertisements on mobile platforms are among the most common targets for click fraud, which makes companies hesitant to advertise their products. Fraudulent clicks are supposed to be caught by ad providers as part of their service to advertisers, which is commonly done using machine learning methods. However: (1) there is a lack of research in current literature addressing and evaluating the different techniques of click fraud detection and prevention, (2) threat models composed of active learning systems (smart attackers) can mislead the training process of the fraud detection model by polluting the training data, (3) current deep learning models have significant computational overhead, (4) training data is often in an imbalanced state, and balancing it still results in noisy data that can train the classifier incorrectly, and (5) datasets with high dimensionality cause increased computational overhead and decreased classifier correctness -- while existing feature selection techniques address this issue, they have their own performance limitations. By extending the state-of-the-art techniques in the field of machine learning, this dissertation provides the following solutions: (i) To address (1) and (2), we propose a hybrid deep-learning-based model which consists of an artificial neural network, auto-encoder and semi-supervised generative adversarial network. (ii) As a solution for (3), we present Cascaded Forest and Extreme Gradient Boosting with less hyperparameter tuning. (iii) To overcome (4), we propose a row-wise data reduction method, KSMOTE, which filters out noisy data samples both in the raw data and the synthetically generated samples. (iv) For (5), we propose different column-reduction methods such as multi-time-scale Time Series analysis for fraud forecasting, using binary labeled imbalanced datasets and hybrid filter-wrapper feature selection approaches

    Techniques for text classification: Literature review and current trends

    Automated classification of text into predefined categories has always been considered as a vital method to manage and process a vast amount of documents in digital forms that are widespread and continuously increasing. This kind of web information, popularly known as the digital/electronic information is in the form of documents, conference material, publications, journals, editorials, web pages, e-mail etc. People largely access information from these online sources rather than being limited to archaic paper sources like books, magazines, newspapers etc. But the main problem is that this enormous information lacks organization which makes it difficult to manage. Text classification is recognized as one of the key techniques used for organizing such kind of digital data. In this paper we have studied the existing work in the area of text classification which will allow us to have a fair evaluation of the progress made in this field till date. We have investigated the papers to the best of our knowledge and have tried to summarize all existing information in a comprehensive and succinct manner. The studies have been summarized in a tabular form according to the publication year considering numerous key perspectives. The main emphasis is laid on various steps involved in text classification process viz. document representation methods, feature selection methods, data mining methods and the evaluation technique used by each study to carry out the results on a particular dataset
