Analysis and Modular Approach for Text Extraction from Scientific Figures on Limited Data
Scientific figures are widely used as compact, comprehensible representations of important information. The re-usability of these figures is however limited, as one can rarely search directly for them, since they are mostly indexing by their surrounding text (e. g., publication or website) which often does not contain the full-message of the figure. In this thesis, the focus is on making the content of scientific figures accessible by extracting the text from these figures. A modular pipeline for unsupervised text extraction from scientific figures, based on a thorough analysis of the literature, was built to address the problem. This modular pipeline was used to build several unsupervised approaches, to evaluate different methods from the literature and new methods and method combinations. Some supervised approaches were built as well for comparison. One challenge, while evaluating the approaches, was the lack of annotated data, which especially needed to be considered when building the supervised approach. Three existing datasets were used for evaluation as well as two datasets of 241 scientific figures which were manually created and annotated. Additionally, two existing datasets for text extraction from other types of images were used for pretraining the supervised approach. Several experiments showed the superiority of the unsupervised pipeline over common Optical Character Recognition engines and identified the best unsupervised approach. This unsupervised approach was compared with the best supervised approach, which, despite of the limited amount of training data available, clearly outperformed the unsupervised approach.
Deep Learning-Based Human Pose Estimation: A Survey
Human pose estimation aims to locate the human body parts and build human
body representation (e.g., body skeleton) from input data such as images and
videos. It has drawn increasing attention during the past decade and has been
utilized in a wide range of applications including human-computer interaction,
motion analysis, augmented reality, and virtual reality. Although the recently
developed deep learning-based solutions have achieved high performance in human
pose estimation, there still remain challenges due to insufficient training
data, depth ambiguities, and occlusion. The goal of this survey paper is to
provide a comprehensive review of recent deep learning-based solutions for both
2D and 3D pose estimation via a systematic analysis and comparison of these
solutions based on their input data and inference procedures. More than 240
research papers since 2014 are covered in this survey. Furthermore, 2D and 3D
human pose estimation datasets and evaluation metrics are included.
Quantitative performance comparisons of the reviewed methods on popular
datasets are summarized and discussed. Finally, the challenges involved,
applications, and future research directions are concluded. We also provide a

Inner Space Preserving Generative Pose Machine
Image-based generative methods, such as generative adversarial networks
(GANs) have already been able to generate realistic images with much context
control, specially when they are conditioned. However, most successful
frameworks share a common procedure which performs an image-to-image
translation with pose of figures in the image untouched. When the objective is
reposing a figure in an image while preserving the rest of the image, the
state-of-the-art mainly assumes a single rigid body with simple background and
limited pose shift, which can hardly be extended to the images under normal
settings. In this paper, we introduce an image "inner space" preserving model
that assigns an interpretable low-dimensional pose descriptor (LDPD) to an
articulated figure in the image. Figure reposing is then generated by passing
the LDPD and the original image through multi-stage augmented hourglass
networks in a conditional GAN structure, called inner space preserving
generative pose machine (ISP-GPM). We evaluated ISP-GPM on reposing human
figures, which are highly articulated with versatile variations. Test of a
state-of-the-art pose estimator on our reposed dataset gave an accuracy over
80% on PCK0.5 metric. The results also elucidated that our ISP-GPM is able to
preserve the background with high accuracy while reasonably recovering the area
blocked by the figure to be reposed.Comment: http://www.northeastern.edu/ostadabbas/2018/07/23/inner-space-preserving-generative-pose-machine

An original framework for understanding human actions and body language by using deep neural networks
The evolution of both fields of Computer Vision (CV) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) has allowed the development of efficient automatic systems for the analysis of people's behaviour.
By studying hand movements it is possible to recognize gestures, often used by people to communicate information in a non-verbal way.
These gestures can also be used to control or interact with devices without physically touching them. In particular, sign language and semaphoric hand gestures are the two foremost areas of interest due to their importance in Human-Human Communication (HHC) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), respectively.
While the processing of body movements play a key role in the action recognition and affective computing fields. The former is essential to understand how people act in an environment, while the latter tries to interpret people's emotions based on their poses and movements;
both are essential tasks in many computer vision applications, including event recognition, and video surveillance.
In this Ph.D. thesis, an original framework for understanding Actions and body language is presented. The framework is composed of three main modules: in the first one, a Long Short Term Memory Recurrent Neural Networks (LSTM-RNNs) based method for the Recognition of Sign Language and Semaphoric Hand Gestures is proposed; the second module presents a solution based on 2D skeleton and two-branch stacked LSTM-RNNs for action recognition in video sequences; finally, in the last module, a solution for basic non-acted emotion recognition by using 3D skeleton and Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is provided.
The performances of RNN-LSTMs are explored in depth, due to their ability to model the long term contextual information of temporal sequences, making them suitable for analysing body movements.
All the modules were tested by using challenging datasets, well known in the state of the art, showing remarkable results compared to the current literature methods
Enhanced Concrete Bridge Assessment Using Artificial Intelligence and Mixed Reality
Conventional methods for visual assessment of civil infrastructures have certain limitations, such as subjectivity of the collected data, long inspection time, and high cost of labor. Although some new technologies (i.e. robotic techniques) that are currently in practice can collect objective, quantified data, the inspector\u27s own expertise is still critical in many instances since these technologies are not designed to work interactively with human inspector. This study aims to create a smart, human-centered method that offers significant contributions to infrastructure inspection, maintenance, management practice, and safety for the bridge owners. By developing a smart Mixed Reality (MR) framework, which can be integrated into a wearable holographic headset device, a bridge inspector, for example, can automatically analyze a certain defect such as a crack that he or she sees on an element, display its dimension information in real-time along with the condition state. Such systems can potentially decrease the time and cost of infrastructure inspections by accelerating essential tasks of the inspector such as defect measurement, condition assessment and data processing to management systems. The human centered artificial intelligence (AI) will help the inspector collect more quantified and objective data while incorporating inspector\u27s professional judgment. This study explains in detail the described system and related methodologies of implementing attention guided semi-supervised deep learning into mixed reality technology, which interacts with the human inspector during assessment. Thereby, the inspector and the AI will collaborate/communicate for improved visual inspection
