    A Semantically Enhanced UPnP Control Point for Sharing Multimedia Content

    The Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol lets users share multimedia content across devices and display it in multimedia renderers in homebased LANs. However, UPnP doesn’t support sharing this content between homes (for example, with friends, relatives, or workmates), and content can be difficult to find. A UPnP extension provides uniform access to multimedia content belonging to different homes, such as content from a user’s Facebook friends. In addition, an extended UPnP control point lets users add semantic annotations to their multimedia resources and link them to the linked data cloud to facilitate their discovery by others

    On the Design of a SIP-Based Binding Middleware for Next Generation Home Network Services

    Abstract. This paper proposes a two-layer component-based middleware frame-work that copes with the complexity of managing and constructing efficient and useful SIP-based home services. In the first layer, the device integration frame-work overcomes the heterogeneity of media home devices by providing protocol-independent components that reify the underlying devices. At the second layer, the binding framework allows constructing open mobile media bindings between SIP and non SIP communication protocol endpoints including media home de-vices. The openness of our framework is motivated by the need of constructing highly flexible home services such as context aware adaptation, session mobility, media session enrichment and QoS. Our framework is implemented as part of a context-aware adaptive middleware on top of the OSGi platform and an illustra-tive use case is shown.

    A framework for the visualisation and control of ubiquitous devices, services and digital content

    The General Organization for Technical Education and Vocational Training, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has developed a special feeding program for the students at its institutions. The effects of this program on the nutritional and health status of these students have not been evaluated yet, and since no published dietary research has been performed on Technical and Vocational young adult male students, the present work was undertaken to investigate the nutritional status of this community in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. After a pilot survey, it was decided to use a selfcompleted questionnaire combined with personal interview to investigate the nutritional status of 690 students randomly selected from the study population. Dietary data was collected by two methods: usual weekly intakes "diet history" and actual daily intakes "diet diary". The nutrient intakes were calculated using the unilever Dietary Analysis Program (UNIDAP). The statistical Package for the social Science (SPSS/PC+) was employed to analyse the data; statistical significance of relationships between certain sets of data was determined by chi-square analysis. Some general factors affecting the nutritional status of these students were identified, their nutritional habits and attitudes were investigated, and the average daily intakes of energy, the macronutrients, and selected micronutrients were calculated. The main results of this study shows that the majority of the study population are adolescent, moderately active individuals, and have lower than the standard range of the Body Mass Index; anaemia is the most stated health problem; meal-skipping and eating between meals are common habits amongst the students. Regarding nutrient intake, there was an energy, polyunsaturated fat, and vitamin C deficiency; adequate intake of saturated fat, dietary fibre, retinol, and zinc; more than adequate intake of protein, total fat, cholesterol, thiamin, riboflavin, calcium, and iron.     Smart PIN: performance and cost-oriented context-aware personal information network

    The next generation of networks will involve interconnection of heterogeneous individual networks such as WPAN, WLAN, WMAN and Cellular network, adopting the IP as common infrastructural protocol and providing virtually always-connected network. Furthermore, there are many devices which enable easy acquisition and storage of information as pictures, movies, emails, etc. Therefore, the information overload and divergent content’s characteristics make it difficult for users to handle their data in manual way. Consequently, there is a need for personalised automatic services which would enable data exchange across heterogeneous network and devices. To support these personalised services, user centric approaches for data delivery across the heterogeneous network are also required. In this context, this thesis proposes Smart PIN - a novel performance and cost-oriented context-aware Personal Information Network. Smart PIN's architecture is detailed including its network, service and management components. Within the service component, two novel schemes for efficient delivery of context and content data are proposed: Multimedia Data Replication Scheme (MDRS) and Quality-oriented Algorithm for Multiple-source Multimedia Delivery (QAMMD). MDRS supports efficient data accessibility among distributed devices using data replication which is based on a utility function and a minimum data set. QAMMD employs a buffer underflow avoidance scheme for streaming, which achieves high multimedia quality without content adaptation to network conditions. Simulation models for MDRS and QAMMD were built which are based on various heterogeneous network scenarios. Additionally a multiple-source streaming based on QAMMS was implemented as a prototype and tested in an emulated network environment. Comparative tests show that MDRS and QAMMD perform significantly better than other approaches

    Persönliche Wege der Interaktion mit multimedialen Inhalten

    Today the world of multimedia is almost completely device- and content-centered. It focuses it’s energy nearly exclusively on technical issues such as computing power, network specifics or content and device characteristics and capabilities. In most multimedia systems, the presentation of multimedia content and the basic controls for playback are main issues. Because of this, a very passive user experience, comparable to that of traditional TV, is most often provided. In the face of recent developments and changes in the realm of multimedia and mass media, this ”traditional” focus seems outdated. The increasing use of multimedia content on mobile devices, along with the continuous growth in the amount and variety of content available, make necessary an urgent re-orientation of this domain. In order to highlight the depth of the increasingly difficult situation faced by users of such systems, it is only logical that these individuals be brought to the center of attention. In this thesis we consider these trends and developments by applying concepts and mechanisms to multimedia systems that were first introduced in the domain of usercentrism. Central to the concept of user-centrism is that devices should provide users with an easy way to access services and applications. Thus, the current challenge is to combine mobility, additional services and easy access in a single and user-centric approach. This thesis presents a framework for introducing and supporting several of the key concepts of user-centrism in multimedia systems. Additionally, a new definition of a user-centric multimedia framework has been developed and implemented. To satisfy the user’s need for mobility and flexibility, our framework makes possible seamless media and service consumption. The main aim of session mobility is to help people cope with the increasing number of different devices in use. Using a mobile agent system, multimedia sessions can be transferred between different devices in a context-sensitive way. The use of the international standard MPEG-21 guarantees extensibility and the integration of content adaptation mechanisms. Furthermore, a concept is presented that will allow for individualized and personalized selection and face the need for finding appropriate content. All of which can be done, using this approach, in an easy and intuitive way. Especially in the realm of television, the demand that such systems cater to the need of the audience is constantly growing. Our approach combines content-filtering methods, state-of-the-art classification techniques and mechanisms well known from the area of information retrieval and text mining. These are all utilized for the generation of recommendations in a promising new way. Additionally, concepts from the area of collaborative tagging systems are also used. An extensive experimental evaluation resulted in several interesting findings and proves the applicability of our approach. In contrast to the ”lean-back” experience of traditional media consumption, interactive media services offer a solution to make possible the active participation of the audience. Thus, we present a concept which enables the use of interactive media services on mobile devices in a personalized way. Finally, a use case for enriching TV with additional content and services demonstrates the feasibility of this concept.Die heutige Welt der Medien und der multimedialen Inhalte ist nahezu ausschließlich inhalts- und gerĂ€teorientiert. Im Fokus verschiedener Systeme und Entwicklungen stehen oft primĂ€r die Art und Weise der InhaltsprĂ€sentation und technische Spezifika, die meist gerĂ€teabhĂ€ngig sind. Die zunehmende Menge und Vielfalt an multimedialen Inhalten und der verstĂ€rkte Einsatz von mobilen GerĂ€ten machen ein Umdenken bei der Konzeption von Multimedia Systemen und Frameworks dringend notwendig. Statt an eher starren und passiven Konzepten, wie sie aus dem TV Umfeld bekannt sind, festzuhalten, sollte der Nutzer in den Fokus der multimedialen Konzepte rĂŒcken. Um dem Nutzer im Umgang mit dieser immer komplexeren und schwierigen Situation zu helfen, ist ein Umdenken im grundlegenden Paradigma des Medienkonsums notwendig. Durch eine Fokussierung auf den Nutzer kann der beschriebenen Situation entgegengewirkt werden. In der folgenden Arbeit wird auf Konzepte aus dem Bereich Nutzerzentrierung zurĂŒckgegriffen, um diese auf den Medienbereich zu ĂŒbertragen und sie im Sinne einer stĂ€rker nutzerspezifischen und nutzerorientierten Ausrichtung einzusetzen. Im Fokus steht hierbei der TV-Bereich, wobei die meisten Konzepte auch auf die allgemeine Mediennutzung ĂŒbertragbar sind. Im Folgenden wird ein Framework fĂŒr die UnterstĂŒtzung der wichtigsten Konzepte der Nutzerzentrierung im Multimedia Bereich vorgestellt. Um dem Trend zur mobilen Mediennutzung Sorge zu tragen, ermöglicht das vorgestellte Framework die Nutzung von multimedialen Diensten und Inhalten auf und ĂŒber die Grenzen verschiedener GerĂ€te und Netzwerke hinweg (Session mobility). Durch die Nutzung einer mobilen Agentenplattform in Kombination mit dem MPEG-21 Standard konnte ein neuer und flexibel erweiterbarer Ansatz zur MobilitĂ€t von Benutzungssitzungen realisiert werden. Im Zusammenhang mit der stetig wachsenden Menge an Inhalten und Diensten stellt diese Arbeit ein Konzept zur einfachen und individualisierten Selektion und dem Auffinden von interessanten Inhalten und Diensten in einer kontextspezifischen Weise vor. Hierbei werden Konzepte und Methoden des inhaltsbasierten Filterns, aktuelle Klassifikationsmechanismen und Methoden aus dem Bereich des ”Textminings” in neuer Art und Weise in einem Multimedia Empfehlungssystem eingesetzt. ZusĂ€tzlich sind Methoden des Web 2.0 in eine als Tag-basierte kollaborative Komponente integriert. In einer umfassenden Evaluation wurde sowohl die Umsetzbarkeit als auch der Mehrwert dieser Komponente demonstriert. Eine aktivere Beteiligung im Medienkonsum ermöglicht unsere iTV Komponente. Sie unterstĂŒtzt das Anbieten und die Nutzung von interaktiven Diensten, begleitend zum Medienkonsum, auf mobilen GerĂ€ten. Basierend auf einem Szenario zur Anreicherung von TV Sendungen um interaktive Dienste konnte die Umsetzbarkeit dieses Konzepts demonstriert werden

    Segmentation sémantique des contenus audio-visuels

    Dans ce travail, nous avons mis au point une mĂ©thode de segmentation des contenus audiovisuels applicable aux appareils de stockage domestiques pour cela nous avons expĂ©rimentĂ© un systĂšme distribuĂ© pour l’analyse du contenu composĂ© de modules individuels d’analyse : les Service Unit. L’un d’entre eux a Ă©tĂ© dĂ©diĂ© Ă  la caractĂ©risation des Ă©lĂ©ments hors contenu, i.e. les publicitĂ©s, et offre de bonnes performances. ParallĂšlement, nous avons testĂ© diffĂ©rents dĂ©tecteurs de changement de plans afin de retenir le meilleur d’entre eux pour la suite. Puis, nous avons proposĂ© une Ă©tude des rĂšgles de production des films, i.e. grammaire de films, qui a permis de dĂ©finir les sĂ©quences de Parallel Shot. Nous avons, ainsi, testĂ© quatre mĂ©thodes de regroupement basĂ©es similaritĂ© afin de retenir la meilleure d’entre elles pour la suite. Finalement, nous avons recherchĂ© diffĂ©rentes mĂ©thodes de dĂ©tection des frontiĂšres de scĂšnes et avons obtenu les meilleurs rĂ©sultats en combinant une mĂ©thode basĂ©e couleur avec un critĂšre de longueur de plan. Ce dernier offre des performances justifiant son intĂ©gration dans les appareils de stockage grand public.In this work we elaborated a method for semantic segmentation of audiovisual content applicable for consumer electronics storage devices. For the specific solution we researched first a service-oriented distributed multimedia content analysis framework composed of individual content analysis modules, i.e. Service Units. One of the latter was dedicated to identify non-content related inserts, i.e. commercials blocks, which reached high performance results. In a subsequent step we researched and benchmarked various Shot Boundary Detectors and implement the best performing one as Service Unit. Here after, our study of production rules, i.e. film grammar, provided insights of Parallel Shot sequences, i.e. Cross-Cuttings and Shot-Reverse-Shots. We researched and benchmarked four similarity-based clustering methods, two colour- and two feature-point-based ones, in order to retain the best one for our final solution. Finally, we researched several audiovisual Scene Boundary Detector methods and achieved best results combining a colour-based method with a shot length based criteria. This Scene Boundary Detector identified semantic scene boundaries with a robustness of 66% for movies and 80% for series, which proofed to be sufficient for our envisioned application Advanced Content Navigation

    Information-Centric Connectivity

    Mobile devices are often presented with multiple connectivity options usually making a selection either randomly or based on load/wireless conditions metrics, as is the case of current offloading schemes. In this paper we claim that link-layer connectivity can be associated with information-availability and in this respect connectivity decisions should be information-aware. This constitutes a next step for the Information-Centric Networking paradigm, realizing the concept of Information-Centric Connectivity (ICCON). We elaborate on different types of information availability and connectivity decisions in the context of ICCON, present specific use cases and discuss emerging opportunities, challenges and technical approaches. We illustrate the potential benefits of ICCON through preliminary simulation and numerical results in an example use case
