A mixed-signal integrated circuit for FM-DCSK modulation
This paper presents a mixed-signal application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for a frequency-modulated differential chaos shift keying (FM-DCSK) communication system. The chip is conceived to serve as an experimental platform for the evaluation of the FM-DCSK modulation scheme, and includes several programming features toward this goal. The operation of the ASIC is herein illustrated for a data rate of 500 kb/s and a transmission bandwidth in the range of 17 MHz. Using signals acquired from the test platform, bit error rate (BER) estimations of the overall FM-DCSK communication link have been obtained assuming wireless transmission at the 2.4-GHz ISM band. Under all tested propagation conditions, including multipath effects, the system obtains a BER = 10-3 for Eb/No lower than 28 dB.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC2003-0235
Apparatus to control and visualize the impact of a high-energy laser pulse on a liquid target
We present an experimental apparatus to control and visualize the response of
a liquid target to a laser-induced vaporization. We use a millimeter-sized drop
as target and present two liquid-dye solutions that allow a variation of the
absorption coefficient of the laser light in the drop by seven orders of
magnitude. The excitation source is a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at its
frequency-doubled wavelength emitting nanosecond pulses with energy densities
above the local vaporization threshold. The absorption of the laser energy
leads to a large-scale liquid motion at timescales that are separated by
several orders of magnitude, which we spatiotemporally resolve by a combination
of ultra-high-speed and stroboscopic high-resolution imaging in two orthogonal
views. Surprisingly, the large-scale liquid motion at upon laser impact is
completely controlled by the spatial energy distribution obtained by a precise
beam-shaping technique. The apparatus demonstrates the potential for accurate

The S2 VLBI Correlator: A Correlator for Space VLBI and Geodetic Signal Processing
We describe the design of a correlator system for ground and space-based
VLBI. The correlator contains unique signal processing functions: flexible LO
frequency switching for bandwidth synthesis; 1 ms dump intervals, multi-rate
digital signal-processing techniques to allow correlation of signals at
different sample rates; and a digital filter for very high resolution
cross-power spectra. It also includes autocorrelation, tone extraction, pulsar

Panoramic-reconstruction temporal imaging for seamless measurements of slowly-evolved femtosecond pulse dynamics
Single-shot real-time characterization of optical waveforms with
sub-picosecond resolution is essential for investigating various ultrafast
optical dynamics. However, the finite temporal recording length of current
techniques hinders comprehensive understanding of many intriguing ultrafast
optical phenomena that evolve over a time scale much longer than their fine
temporal details. Inspired by the space-time duality and by stitching of
multiple microscopic images to achieve a larger field of view in the spatial
domain, here a panoramic-reconstruction temporal imaging (PARTI) system is
devised to scale up the temporal recording length without sacrificing the
resolution. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, the PARTI system is applied to
study the dynamic waveforms of slowly-evolved dissipative Kerr solitons in an
ultrahigh-Q microresonator. Two 1.5-ns-long comprehensive evolution portraits
are reconstructed with 740-fs resolution and dissipative Kerr soliton
transition dynamics, in which a multiplet soliton state evolves into stable
singlet soliton state, are depicted
An Analog Multiphase Self-Calibrating DLL to Minimize the Effects of Process, Supply Voltage, and Temperature Variations
Delay locked loops have been found to be useful tools in such applications as computing, TDCs, and communications. These system can be found in space exploration vehicles and satellites, which operate in extreme environments. Unfortunately, in these environments supply voltage and temperature will not be constant, therefore they must be under consideration when designing a DLL. Furthermore, solar radiation in conjunction with the varying environmental aspects, could cause the delay locked loop to lose it locked state.
Delay locked loops are inherently good at tracking these environmental aspects, but in order to do so, the voltage controlled delay line must exhibit a very large gain, which translates to a large capture range. Assuming charged particles hit a key node in the DLL (e.g. the control voltage), the DLL would lose lock and would have to recapture it. Depending on the severity of the uctuation, this relocking process could easily take on the order of many microseconds assuming the bandwidth was kept low to minimize jitter. To date, no delay locked loops have been published for extreme environment applications.
In many other extreme environment circuits, calibration techniques have been applied to minimize the environmental effects. Whereas there have been multiple calibration methods published related to delay locked loops, none of them were intended for extreme environments. Furthermore, none of these methods are directly suitable for an analog multiphase delay locked loop.
The self-calibrating DLL in this work includes an all digital calibration circuit, as well as a system transient monitor. The coarse calibration helps minimize global process, voltage, and temperature errors for an analog multiphase DLL. The system monitor is used to detect any transients that might cause the DLL to unlock, which could be used to allow the DLL to be recalibrated to the new environmental conditions. The presented measurement results will demonstrate that the DLL can be used in extreme environments such as space, or other extreme environment applications
JUNO Conceptual Design Report
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is proposed to determine
the neutrino mass hierarchy using an underground liquid scintillator detector.
It is located 53 km away from both Yangjiang and Taishan Nuclear Power Plants
in Guangdong, China. The experimental hall, spanning more than 50 meters, is
under a granite mountain of over 700 m overburden. Within six years of running,
the detection of reactor antineutrinos can resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy
at a confidence level of 3-4, and determine neutrino oscillation
parameters , , and to
an accuracy of better than 1%. The JUNO detector can be also used to study
terrestrial and extra-terrestrial neutrinos and new physics beyond the Standard
Model. The central detector contains 20,000 tons liquid scintillator with an
acrylic sphere of 35 m in diameter. 17,000 508-mm diameter PMTs with high
quantum efficiency provide 75% optical coverage. The current choice of
the liquid scintillator is: linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as the solvent, plus PPO
as the scintillation fluor and a wavelength-shifter (Bis-MSB). The number of
detected photoelectrons per MeV is larger than 1,100 and the energy resolution
is expected to be 3% at 1 MeV. The calibration system is designed to deploy
multiple sources to cover the entire energy range of reactor antineutrinos, and
to achieve a full-volume position coverage inside the detector. The veto system
is used for muon detection, muon induced background study and reduction. It
consists of a Water Cherenkov detector and a Top Tracker system. The readout
system, the detector control system and the offline system insure efficient and

A gated oscillator clock and data recovery circuit for nanowatt wake-up and data receivers
This article presents a data-startable baseband logic featuring a gated oscillator clock and data recovery (GO-CDR) circuit for nanowatt wake-up and data receivers (WuRxs). At each data transition, the phase misalignment between the data coming from the analog front-end (AFE) and the clock is cleared by the GO-CDR circuit, thus allowing the reception of long data streams. Any free-running frequency mismatch between the GO and the bitrate does not limit the number of receivable bits, but only the maximum number of equal consecutive bits (Nm). To overcome this limitation, the proposed system includes a frequency calibration circuit, which reduces the frequency mismatch to ±0.5%, thus enabling the WuRx to be used with different encoding techniques up to Nm = 100. A full WuRx prototype, including an always-on clockless AFE operating in subthreshold, was fabricated with STMicroelectronics 90 nm BCD technology. The WuRx is supplied with 0.6 V, and the power consumption, excluding the calibration circuit, is 12.8 nW during the rest state and 17 nW at a 1 kbps data rate. With a 1 kbps On-Off Keying (OOK) modulated input and −35 dBm of input RF power after the input matching network (IMN), a 10^(−3) missed detection rate with a 0 bit error tolerance is measured, transmitting 63 bit packets with the Nm ranging from 1 to 63. The total sensitivity, including the estimated IMN gain at 100 MHz and 433 MHz, is −59.8 dBm and −52.3 dBm, respectively. In comparison with an ideal CDR, the degradation of the sensitivity due to the GO-CDR is 1.25 dBm. False alarm rate measurements lasting 24 h revealed zero overall false wake-ups
