    Analyzing Peer Selection Policies for BitTorrent Multimedia On-Demand Streaming Systems in Internet

    The adaptation of the BitTorrent protocol to multimedia on-demand streaming systems essentially lies on the modification of its two core algorithms, namely the piece and the peer selection policies, respectively. Much more attention has though been given to the piece selection policy. Within this context, this article proposes three novel peer selection policies for the design of BitTorrent-like protocols targeted at that type of systems: Select Balanced Neighbour Policy (SBNP), Select Regular Neighbour Policy (SRNP), and Select Optimistic Neighbour Policy (SONP). These proposals are validated through a competitive analysis based on simulations which encompass a variety of multimedia scenarios, defined in function of important characterization parameters such as content type, content size, and client interactivity profile. Service time, number of clients served and efficiency retrieving coefficient are the performance metrics assessed in the analysis. The final results mainly show that the novel proposals constitute scalable solutions that may be considered for real project designs.     Enabling Large-Scale Peer-to-Peer Stored Video Streaming Service with QoS Support

    This research aims to enable a large-scale, high-volume, peer-to-peer, stored-video streaming service over the Internet, such as on-line DVD rentals. P2P allows a group of dynamically organized users to cooperatively support content discovery and distribution services without needing to employ a central server. P2P has the potential to overcome the scalability issue associated with client-server based video distribution networks; however, it brings a new set of challenges. This research addresses the following five technical challenges associated with the distribution of streaming video over the P2P network: 1) allow users with limited transmit bandwidth capacity to become contributing sources, 2) support the advertisement and discovery of time-changing and time-bounded video frame availability, 3) Minimize the impact of distribution source losses during video playback, 4) incorporate user mobility information in the selection of distribution sources, and 5) design a streaming network architecture that enables above functionalities.To meet the above requirements, we propose a video distribution network model based on a hybrid architecture between client-server and P2P. In this model, a video is divided into a sequence of small segments and each user executes a scheduling algorithm to determine the order, the timing, and the rate of segment retrievals from other users. The model also employs an advertisement and discovery scheme which incorporates parameters of the scheduling algorithm to allow users to share their life-time of video segment availability information in one advertisement and one query. An accompanying QoS scheme allows reduction in the number of video playback interruptions while one or more distribution sources depart from the service prematurely.The simulation study shows that the proposed model and associated schemes greatly alleviate the bandwidth requirement of the video distribution server, especially when the number of participating users grows large. As much as 90% of load reduction was observed in some experiments when compared to a traditional client-server based video distribution service. A significant reduction is also observed in the number of video presentation interruptions when the proposed QoS scheme is incorporated in the distribution process while certain percentages of distribution sources depart from the service unexpectedly

    How to Perform AMP? Cubic Adjustments for Improving the QoE

    [EN] Adaptive Media Playout (AMP) consists of smoothly and dynamically adjusting the media playout rate to recover from undesired (e.g., buffer overflow/underflow or out-of-sync) situations. The existing AMP solutions are mainly characterized by two main aspects. The first one is their goal (e.g., keeping the buffers¿ occupancy into safe ranges or enabling media synchronization). The second one is the criteria that determine the need for triggering the playout adjustments (e.g., buffer fullness or asynchrony levels). This paper instead focuses on a third key aspect, which has not been sufficiently investigated yet: the specific adjustment strategy to be performed. In particular, we propose a novel AMP strategy, called Cubic AMP, which is based on employing a cubic interpolation method to adjust a deviated playout point to a given reference. On the one hand, mathematical analysis and graphical examples show that our proposal provides superior performance than other existing linear and quadratic AMP strategies in terms of the smoothness of the playout curve, while significantly outperforming the quadratic AMP strategy regarding the duration of the adjustment period and without increasing the computational complexity. It has also been proved and discussed that higher-order polynomial interpolation methods are less convenient than cubic ones.     Error and Congestion Resilient Video Streaming over Broadband Wireless

    In this paper, error resilience is achieved by adaptive, application-layer rateless channel coding, which is used to protect H.264/Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec data-partitioned videos. A packetization strategy is an effective tool to control error rates and, in the paper, source-coded data partitioning serves to allocate smaller packets to more important compressed video data. The scheme for doing this is applied to real-time streaming across a broadband wireless link. The advantages of rateless code rate adaptivity are then demonstrated in the paper. Because the data partitions of a video slice are each assigned to different network packets, in congestion-prone wireless networks the increased number of packets per slice and their size disparity may increase the packet loss rate from buffer overflows. As a form of congestion resilience, this paper recommends packet-size dependent scheduling as a relatively simple way of alleviating the buffer-overflow problem arising from data-partitioned packets. The paper also contributes an analysis of data partitioning and packet sizes as a prelude to considering scheduling regimes. The combination of adaptive channel coding and prioritized packetization for error resilience with packet-size dependent packet scheduling results in a robust streaming scheme specialized for broadband wireless and real-time streaming applications such as video conferencing, video telephony, and telemedicine

    EdgeDASH: Exploiting Network-Assisted Adaptive Video Streaming for Edge Caching

    While edge video caching has great potential to decrease the core network traffic as well as the users' experienced latency, it is often challenging to exploit the caches in current client-driven video streaming solutions due to two key reasons. First, even those clients interested in the same content might request different quality levels as a video content is encoded into multiple qualities to match a wide range of network conditions and device capabilities. Second, the clients, who select the quality of the next chunk to request, are unaware of the cached content at the network edge. Hence, it becomes imperative to develop network-side solutions to exploit caching. This can also mitigate some performance issues, in particular for the scenarios in which multiple video clients compete for some bottleneck capacity. In this paper, we propose a network-side control logic running at a WiFi AP to facilitate the use of cached video content. In particular, an AP can assign a client station a different video quality than its request, in case the alternative quality provides a better utility. We formulate the quality assignment problem as an optimization problem and develop several heuristics with polynomial complexity. Compared to the baseline where the clients determine the quality adaptation, our proposals, referred to as EdgeDASH, offer higher video quality, higher cache hits, and lower stalling ratio which are essential for user's satisfaction. Our simulations show that EdgeDASH facilitates significant cache hits and decreases the buffer stalls only by changing the client's request by one quality level. Moreover, from our analysis, we conclude that the network assistance provides significant performance improvement, especially when the clients with identical interests compete for a bottleneck link's capacity
