Real-time communications over switched Ethernet supporting dynamic QoS management
Além disso, a implantação
Nesta
dissertação é proposto um protocolo, Flexible Time-Triggered communication
over Switched Ethernet (FTT-SE), que suporta as propriedades desejadas e
During the last decade we have witnessed a massive deployment of embedded
systems on a wide applications range, from industrial automation to process
control, avionics, cars or even robotics. Many of these applications have an
inherently high level of criticality, having to perform tasks within tight temporal
constraints. Additionally, the configuration of such systems is often distributed,
with several computing nodes that rely on a communication infrastructure to
cooperate and achieve the application global goals. Therefore, the communications
are also subject to the same temporal constraints set by the application
requirements.
Many applications relying on such networked embedded systems (NES)
are complex and heterogeneous, comprehending different activities with different
requirements and properties. For example, the communication between
subsystems may follow a strict temporal synchronization with respect to a
global time-base (time-triggered), like in a distributed feedback control loop,
or it may be issued asynchronously upon the occurrence of events (eventtriggered).
Regardless of the traffic characteristics and its activation model, it
is of paramount importance having a communication framework that provides
seamless integration of heterogeneous traffic sources while guaranteeing the
application requirements.
Another property that has been emerging as important for NES design and
operation is flexibility. The need to reduce installation and operational costs,
while facilitating maintenance is promoting a more rational use of the available
resources at run-time, exploring the ability to tune service parameters as the
system evolves.
However, such operational flexibility comes with the cost of increasing the
complexity of the system to handle the dynamic resource management, which
on the other hand demands the allocation of additional system resources.
Moreover, the capacity to dynamically modify the system properties also
causes a higher complexity when designing and specifying the system, since
the operational state-space increases with the degrees of flexibility of the
system.
Therefore, in order to bound this complexity appropriate operational models
are needed to handle the system dynamics and carry on an efficient and
fair resource management strategy based on quality of service (QoS) metrics.
This thesis states that the properties of flexibility and timeliness as needed
for dynamic QoS management can be provided to switched Ethernet based
systems. Switched Ethernet, although initially designed for general purpose
Internet access and file transfers, is becoming widely used in NES-based applications.
However, COTS switched Ethernet is insufficient regarding the needs
for real-time predictability and for supporting the aforementioned properties due
the use of FIFO queues too few priority levels and for stream-level management
capabilities. In this dissertation we propose a protocol to overcome those
limitations, namely the Flexible Time-Triggered communication over Switched
Ethernet (FTT-SE). The protocol is based on the FTT paradigm that generically
defines a protocol architecture suitable to enforce real-time determinism on a
communication network supporting the desired flexibility properties.
This dissertation addresses the motivation for FTT-SE, describing the
protocol as well as its schedulability analysis. It additionally covers the resource
distribution topic, where several distribution models are proposed to manage
the resource capacity among the competing services and while considering
the QoS level requirements of each service. A couple of application cases are
shown that support the aforementioned thesis

Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware, Services, and Applications
Today, there is a strong trend towards networked multimedia devices. However, common multimedia software architectures are restricted to perform all processing on a single system. Available software infrastructures for distributed computing — commonly referred to as middleware — only partly provide the facilities needed for supporting multimedia in distributed and dynamic environments. Approaches from the research community only focus on specific aspects and do not achieve the coverage needed for a full-featured multimedia middleware solution. The Network-Integrated Multimedia Middleware (NMM) presented in this thesis considers the network as an integral part. Despite the inherent heterogeneity of present networking and device technologies, the architecture allows to extend control and cooperation to the network and enables the development of distributed multimedia applications that transparently use local and remote components in combination. The base architecture of this middleware is augmented by several middleware services that especially aim at providing additional support for developing complex applications that involve mobile users and devices. To this end, previously not available services and corresponding abstractions are proposed, realized, and evaluated. The performance and applicability of the developed middleware and its additional services are demonstrated by describing different realized application scenarios.
The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC
Após a descrição dos modelos de simulação e algoritmos desenvolvidos, apresentam-se os resultados obtidos com os dois sistemas propostosThis work proposes solutions intended to optimize the transmission of traffic on data acquisition and control systems using wireless networks to interconnect remote units to a central unit. The traffic generated by such systems normally is subject to real time constraints, so the wireless network must be able to support the quality of service (QoS) requirements of the applications.
Although the priority is given to the transportation of real time (isochronous) traffic, the proposed system also allows the transmission of asynchronous data simultaneously, in order to enable the integration of different services under the same communication platform.
The bandwidth available to the operation of wireless networks is scarce, and has to be shared among all the units. Moreover, the channel error rate tends to be higher and more variable than on wired networks. Due to such problems, the medium access control, error control and traffic scheduling mechanisms implemented by the wireless network that is used by the system must be optimized in order to guarantee the quality of service required by the applications.
After a preliminary study of the available wireless networks in order to select those who present the most appropriate characteristics to serve as the basis of the proposed system, the HIPERLAN/2 and IEEE 802.11 networks were chosen.
As the utilization of real systems was not viable, a detailed simulation model for each of the chosen networks was developed and implemented, according to the respective standards. Based on these models, this thesis proposes scheduling algorithms comprising the data and control traffic, which provide quality of service guarantees to the isochronous traffic and allow the transportation of asynchronous traffic on the system at the same time. The results obtained with the simulations allow the evaluation of the performance of the system, even when it is subject to channel errors, and to compare the quality of service of the HIPERLAN/2 network with that of the IEEE 802.11 network.
At the start of this thesis, the fundamental concepts related to the presented work are introduced, followed by the description of the different existing wireless networks technologies, with emphasis on the HIPERLAN/2 and IEEE 802.11 standards. After the description of the developed simulation models and algorithms, the results achieved with both proposed systems are presented.PRODEP - 4/5.3/PRODEP/2000
A Scheduling Model of Isochronous Frame Generation on Self-similar Traffic of AOS Multiplexing
As the first layer of AOS multiplexing, the frame scheduling performance has a great effect on the efficiency of multiplexing. Traditional researches about the scheduling model mainly focus on the source packet arrival model of Poisson process. In this paper, an ON/OFF source arrival model and Pareto distribution of AOS multiplexing in self-similar service traffic is used to establish a isochronous frame-generated method through rigorous theoretical analysis, which results in a calculable formula of average packet delay and MPDU average multiplex efficiency. According to simulation of MATLAB, the simulation curve coincides with that of theory. The novel model contributes to the improvement of average packet delay and MPDU average multiplex efficiency on AOS
