    Conditional toggle mappings: principles and applications

    International audienceWe study a class of mathematical morphology filters to operate conditionally according to a set of pixels marked by a binary mask. The main contribution of this paper is to provide a general framework for several applications including edge enhancement and image denoising, when it is affected by salt-and-pepper noise. We achieve this goal by revisiting shock filters based on erosions and dilations and extending their definition to take into account the prior definition of a mask of pixels that should not be altered. New definitions for conditional erosions and dilations leading to the concept of conditional toggle mapping. We also investigate algebraic properties as well as the convergence of the associate shock filter. Experiments show how the selection of appropriate methods to generate the masks lead to either edge enhancement or salt-and-pepper denoising. A quantitative evaluation of the results demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Additionally, we analyse the application of conditional toggle mapping in remote sensing as pre-filtering for hierarchical segmentation

    General Adaptive Neighborhood Image Processing. Part II: Practical Applications Issues

    23 pagesInternational audienceThe so-called General Adaptive Neighborhood Image Processing (GANIP) approach is presented in a two parts paper dealing respectively with its theoretical and practical aspects. The General Adaptive Neighborhood (GAN) paradigm, theoretically introduced in Part I [20], allows the building of new image processing transformations using context-dependent analysis. With the help of a specified analyzing criterion, such transformations perform a more significant spatial analysis, taking intrinsically into account the local radiometric, morphological or geometrical characteristics of the image. Moreover they are consistent with the physical and/or physiological settings of the image to be processed, using general linear image processing frameworks. In this paper, the GANIP approach is more particularly studied in the context of Mathematical Morphology (MM). The structuring elements, required for MM, are substituted by GAN-based structuring elements, fitting to the local contextual details of the studied image. The resulting morphological operators perform a really spatiallyadaptive image processing and notably, in several important and practical cases, are connected, which is a great advantage compared to the usual ones that fail to this property. Several GANIP-based results are here exposed and discussed in image filtering, image segmentation, and image enhancement. In order to evaluate the proposed approach, a comparative study is as far as possible proposed between the adaptive and usual morphological operators. Moreover, the interests to work with the Logarithmic Image Processing framework and with the 'contrast' criterion are shown through practical application examples

    Local blur estimation based on toggle mapping

    International audienceA local blur estimation method is proposed, based on the difference between the gradient and the residue of the toggle mapping. This method is able to compare the quality of images with different content and does not require a contour detection step. Qualitative results are shown in the context of the LINX project. Then, quantitative results are given on DIQA database, outperforming the combination of classical blur detection methods reported in the literature

    WavePacket: A Matlab package for numerical quantum dynamics. I: Closed quantum systems and discrete variable representations

    WavePacket is an open-source program package for the numerical simulation of quantum-mechanical dynamics. It can be used to solve time-independent or time-dependent linear Schr\"odinger and Liouville-von Neumann-equations in one or more dimensions. Also coupled equations can be treated, which allows to simulate molecular quantum dynamics beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Optionally accounting for the interaction with external electric fields within the semiclassical dipole approximation, WavePacket can be used to simulate experiments involving tailored light pulses in photo-induced physics or chemistry.The graphical capabilities allow visualization of quantum dynamics 'on the fly', including Wigner phase space representations. Being easy to use and highly versatile, WavePacket is well suited for the teaching of quantum mechanics as well as for research projects in atomic, molecular and optical physics or in physical or theoretical chemistry.The present Part I deals with the description of closed quantum systems in terms of Schr\"odinger equations. The emphasis is on discrete variable representations for spatial discretization as well as various techniques for temporal discretization.The upcoming Part II will focus on open quantum systems and dimension reduction; it also describes the codes for optimal control of quantum dynamics.The present work introduces the MATLAB version of WavePacket 5.2.1 which is hosted at the Sourceforge platform, where extensive Wiki-documentation as well as worked-out demonstration examples can be found

    An electronic pan/tilt/zoom camera system

    A camera system for omnidirectional image viewing applications that provides pan, tilt, zoom, and rotational orientation within a hemispherical field of view (FOV) using no moving parts was developed. The imaging device is based on the effect that from a fisheye lens, which produces a circular image of an entire hemispherical FOV, can be mathematically corrected using high speed electronic circuitry. An incoming fisheye image from any image acquisition source is captured in memory of the device, a transformation is performed for the viewing region of interest and viewing direction, and a corrected image is output as a video image signal for viewing, recording, or analysis. As a result, this device can accomplish the functions of pan, tilt, rotation, and zoom throughout a hemispherical FOV without the need for any mechanical mechanisms. A programmable transformation processor provides flexible control over viewing situations. Multiple images, each with different image magnifications and pan tilt rotation parameters, can be obtained from a single camera. The image transformation device can provide corrected images at frame rates compatible with RS-170 standard video equipment

    Random projection depth for multivariate mathematical morphology

    International audienceThe open problem of the generalization of mathematical morphology to vector images is handled in this paper using the paradigm of depth functions. Statistical depth functions provide from the "deepest" point a "center-outward ordering" of a multidimensional data distribution and they can be therefore used to construct morphological operators. The fundamental assumption of this data-driven approach is the existence of "background/foreground" image representation. Examples in real color and hyperspectral images illustrate the results

    Text detection in street level images

    International audienceText detection system for natural images is a very challenging task in Computer Vision. Image acquisition introduces distortion in terms of perspective, blurring, illumination, and characters may have very diff erent shape, size, and color. We introduce in this article a full text detection scheme. Our architecture is based on a new process to combine a hypothesis generation step to get potential boxes of text and a hypothesis validation step to filter false detections. The hypothesis generation process relies on a new efficient segmentation method based on a morphological operator. Regions are then filtered and classi ed using shape descriptors based on Fourier, Pseudo Zernike moments and an original polar descriptor, which is invariant to rotation. Classi cation process relies on three SVM classi ers combined in a late fusion scheme. Detected characters are finally grouped to generate our text box hypotheses. Validation step is based on a global SVM classi cation of the box content using dedicated descriptors adapted from the HOG approach. Results on the well-known ICDAR database are reported showing that our method is competitive . Evaluation protocol and metrics are deeply discussed and results on a very challenging street-level database are also proposed
