    Design of a cybernetic hand for perception and action

    Strong motivation for developing new prosthetic hand devices is provided by the fact that low functionality and controllability—in addition to poor cosmetic appearance—are the most important reasons why amputees do not regularly use their prosthetic hands. This paper presents the design of the CyberHand, a cybernetic anthropomorphic hand intended to provide amputees with functional hand replacement. Its design was bio-inspired in terms of its modular architecture, its physical appearance, kinematics, sensorization, and actuation, and its multilevel control system. Its underactuated mechanisms allow separate control of each digit as well as thumb–finger opposition and, accordingly, can generate a multitude of grasps. Its sensory system was designed to provide proprioceptive information as well as to emulate fundamental functional properties of human tactile mechanoreceptors of specific importance for grasp-and-hold tasks. The CyberHand control system presumes just a few efferent and afferent channels and was divided in two main layers: a high-level control that interprets the user’s intention (grasp selection and required force level) and can provide pertinent sensory feedback and a low-level control responsible for actuating specific grasps and applying the desired total force by taking advantage of the intelligent mechanics. The grasps made available by the high-level controller include those fundamental for activities of daily living: cylindrical, spherical, tridigital (tripod), and lateral grasps. The modular and flexible design of the CyberHand makes it suitable for incremental development of sensorization, interfacing, and control strategies and, as such, it will be a useful tool not only for clinical research but also for addressing neuroscientific hypotheses regarding sensorimotor control

    Design of a Customized multipurpose nano-enabled implantable system for in-vivo theranostics

    The first part of this paper reviews the current development and key issues on implantable multi-sensor devices for in vivo theranostics. Afterwards, the authors propose an innovative biomedical multisensory system for in vivo biomarker monitoring that could be suitable for customized theranostics applications. At this point, findings suggest that cross-cutting Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) could improve the overall performance of the system given that the convergence of technologies in nanotechnology, biotechnology, micro&nanoelectronics and advanced materials permit the development of new medical devices of small dimensions, using biocompatible materials, and embedding reliable and targeted biosensors, high speed data communication, and even energy autonomy. Therefore, this article deals with new research and market challenges of implantable sensor devices, from the point of view of the pervasive system, and time-to-market. The remote clinical monitoring approach introduced in this paper could be based on an array of biosensors to extract information from the patient. A key contribution of the authors is that the general architecture introduced in this paper would require minor modifications for the final customized bio-implantable medical device

    dissertationBiomedical implantable devices have been developed for both research and clinical applications, to stimulate and record physiological signals in vivo. Chronic use of biomedical devices with thin-film-based encapsulation in large scale is impeded by their lack of long-term functionality and stability. Biostable, biocompatible, conformal, and electrically insulating coatings that sustain chronic implantation are essential for chip-scale implantable electronic systems. Even though many materials have been studied to for this purpose, to date, no encapsulation method has been thoroughly characterized or qualified as a broadly applicable long-term hermetic encapsulation for biomedical implantable devices. In this work, atomic layer deposited Al2O3 and Parylene C bi-layer was investigated as encapsulation for biomedical devices. The combination of ALD Al2O3 and CVD Parylene C encapsulation extended the lifetime of coated interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) to up to 72 months (to date) with low leakage current of ~ 15 pA. The long lifetime was achieved by significantly reducing moisture permeation due to the ALD Al2O3 layer. Moreover, the bi-layer encapsulation separates the permeated moisture (mostly at the Al2O3 and Parylene interface) from the surface contaminants (mostly at the device and Al2O3 interface), preventing the formation of localized electrolyte through condensation. Al2O3 works as an inner moisture barrier and Parylene works as an external ion barrier, preventing contact of AI2O3 with liquid water, and slowing the kinetics of alumina corrosion. Selective removal of encapsulation materials is required to expose the active sites for interacting with physiological environment. A self-aligned mask process with three steps was developed to expose active sites, composed of laser ablation, oxygen plasma etching, and BOE etching. Al2O3 layer was found to prevent the formation of microcracks in the iridium oxide film during laser ablation. Bi-layer encapsulated iridium oxide had higher charge injection capacity and similar electrochemical impedance compared with Parylene C coated iridium oxide film after deinsulation. The Al2O3 and Parylene C bi-layer encapsulation was applied to Utah electrode array (UEA)-based neural interfaces to study its long-term performance. The median tip impedance of the bi-layer encapsulated wired Utah electrode array increased slowly during the 960 days of equivalent soak testing at 37 °C. Impedance for Parylene coated UEA dropped 50% to 75% within 6 months. In addition, bi-layer coated fully integrated Utah array-based wireless neural interfaces had stable power-up frequencies at ~910 MHz and constant RF signal strength of -50 dBm during the 1044 days of equivalent soaking time at 37 °C. This is much longer than lifetime achieved with Parylene C coating, which was about one year at room temperature

    Neuroengineering Tools/Applications for Bidirectional Interfaces, Brain–Computer Interfaces, and Neuroprosthetic Implants – A Review of Recent Progress

    The main focus of this review is to provide a holistic amalgamated overview of the most recent human in vivo techniques for implementing brain–computer interfaces (BCIs), bidirectional interfaces, and neuroprosthetics. Neuroengineering is providing new methods for tackling current difficulties; however neuroprosthetics have been studied for decades. Recent progresses are permitting the design of better systems with higher accuracies, repeatability, and system robustness. Bidirectional interfaces integrate recording and the relaying of information from and to the brain for the development of BCIs. The concepts of non-invasive and invasive recording of brain activity are introduced. This includes classical and innovative techniques like electroencephalography and near-infrared spectroscopy. Then the problem of gliosis and solutions for (semi-) permanent implant biocompatibility such as innovative implant coatings, materials, and shapes are discussed. Implant power and the transmission of their data through implanted pulse generators and wireless telemetry are taken into account. How sensation can be relayed back to the brain to increase integration of the neuroengineered systems with the body by methods such as micro-stimulation and transcranial magnetic stimulation are then addressed. The neuroprosthetic section discusses some of the various types and how they operate. Visual prosthetics are discussed and the three types, dependant on implant location, are examined. Auditory prosthetics, being cochlear or cortical, are then addressed. Replacement hand and limb prosthetics are then considered. These are followed by sections concentrating on the control of wheelchairs, computers and robotics directly from brain activity as recorded by non-invasive and invasive techniques

    Bringing sensation to prosthetic hands—chronic assessment of implanted thin-film electrodes in humans

    Direct stimulation of peripheral nerves with implantable electrodes successfully provided sensory feedback to amputees while using hand prostheses. Longevity of the electrodes is key to success, which we have improved for the polyimide-based transverse intrafascicular multichannel electrode (TIME). The TIMEs were implanted in the median and ulnar nerves of three trans-radial amputees for up to six months. We present a comprehensive assessment of the electrical properties of the thin-film metallization as well as material status post explantationem. The TIMEs stayed within the electrochemical safe limits while enabling consistent and precise amplitude modulation. This lead to a reliable performance in terms of eliciting sensation. No signs of corrosion or morphological change to the thin-film metallization of the probes was observed by means of electrochemical and optical analysis. The presented longevity demonstrates that thin-film electrodes are applicable in permanent implant systems

    Polymeric Microsensors for Intraoperative Contact Pressure Measurement

    Biocompatible sensors have been demonstrated using traditional microfabrication techniques modified for polymer substrates and utilize only materials suitable for implantation or bodily contact. Sensor arrays for the measurement of the load condition of polyethylene spacers in the total knee arthroplasty (TKA) prosthesis have been developed. Arrays of capacitive sensors are used to determine the three-dimensional strain within the polyethylene prosthesis component. Data from these sensors can be used to give researchers a better understanding of component motion, loading, and wear phenomena for a large range of activities. This dissertation demonstrates both analytically and experimentally the fabrication of these sensor arrays using biocompatible polymer substrates and dielectrics while preserving industry-standard microfabrication processing for micron-level resolution. An array of sensors for real-time measurement of pressure profiles is the long-term goal of this research. A custom design using capacitive-based sensors is an excellent selection for such measurement, giving high spatial resolution across the sensing surface and high load resolution for pressures applied normal to that surface while operating at low power
