A Discussion of Thin Client Technology for Computer Labs

    Get PDF
Computer literacy is not negotiable for any professional in an increasingly computerised environment. Educational institutions should be equipped to provide this new basic training for modern life. Accordingly, computer labs are an essential medium for education in almost any field. Computer labs are one of the most popular IT infrastructures for technical training in primary and secondary schools, universities and other educational institutions all over the world. Unfortunately, a computer lab is expensive, in terms of both initial purchase and annual maintenance costs, and especially when we want to run the latest software. Hence, research efforts addressing computer lab efficiency, performance or cost reduction would have a worldwide repercussion. In response to this concern, this paper presents a survey on thin client technology for computer labs in educational environments. Besides setting out the advantages and drawbacks of this technology, we aim to refute false prejudices against thin clients, identifying a set of educational scenarios where thin clients are a better choice and others requiring traditional solutions

Kata kunci : E-learning, Scorm, Keterlibatan dan Hasil belajar AbstractThis study aims to determine the use of the e-learning score model to improve learning outcomes through the involvement of students in digital simulation subjects at SMK Negeri 12 Garut. The research method used is accurate experimental research. Research instruments in the form of tests and non-tests. The population in this study was class X students at SMK Negeri 12 Garut in the 2019/2020 school year. Learning outcomes are obtained through tests, while responses and student involvement in learning are obtained through questionnaires (questionnaires) which are then statistically tested through parametric tests. The results showed the use of e-learning in theoretical knowledge by using the score (Sharable Content Object Reference Model). 46%. The results of the calculation of the experimental class students' responses to education using e-learning obtained the highest average percentage of 82.1% and were included in the excellent category. In e-learning, 90% of students are actively involved in online discussion forums, each of these students responding several times to online discussion forums. While the research results obtained in the experimental class for the posttest average value of 88, there was an increase from the pretest average value of 62.75 with an increased level of 40%. This means that students respond well in learning by using the e-learning score model. This model can be an alternative to online learning models combined with face-to-face learning. Further research needs to be done to see the effectiveness of using e-learning in a broader scale and on different topics. Keywords: E-learning, Scorm, Engagement, and Learning Outcome

Conceptual architecture design and configuration of thin client system for schools in Malaysia: a pilot project

Thin client systems have advanced recently with new innovative design extensions such as virtualisation and cloud computing. Client-server architecture is the basis for thin client system to connect remote multi-workstations to administrative servers located in headquarters or data center. This paper first presents a literature review on thin client concept and virtualization. In the next section, we describe the Wyse Technology and Linux thin client for windows-based and open source solution respectively. We then proceed with description of proposed conceptual architecture design and implementation for primary and secondary schools in Malaysia taking into account International Telecommunication Union and other International standards or benchmarks for high quality of service (QoS) delivery. Finally, our recommendation is that each system design and implementation is unique and thus requires different sets of decision-making criteria before designing an architecture. Networked-schools across a country like Malaysia with heavy users requirements pose high specification in architecture and system design planning to IT divisions. Interoperability of Remote Laboratories Systems

There has been growing interest in, and development of, remotely accessible laboratories as a mechanism for improving access and flexibility, and enabling sharing of facilities. Differences in focus, philosophy, approach or domain have led to quite different technical solutions in supporting remote laboratories. Whilst this diversity represents a significant strength in terms of the ability to explore different issues and support diverse applications, it does however potentially hamper the sharing of labs between different institutions. Investigation into interoperability between two remote lab platforms has realized a need for a common application protocol to achieve the goals remote labs aims to provide. We describe our approach to providing a bridge between two current remote laboratory architectures Labshares Sahara and MITs iLabs and report on the issues that arise with regard to the protocol translations
