    Get PDF
This paper introduces an intelligent computational approach to automatically authenticate fingerprint for personal identification and verification. The feature vector is formed using combined features obtained from Gabor filtering technique and deep learning technique such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Principle Component Analysis (PCA) has been performed on the feature vectors to reduce the overfitting problems in order to make the classification results more accurate and reliable. A multiclass classifier has been trained using the extracted features. Experiments performed using standard public databases demonstrated that the proposed approach showed better performance with regard to accuracy (99.87%) compared to the more recent classification techniques such as Support Vector Machine (97.86%) or Random Forest (95.47%). However, the proposed method also showed higher accuracy compared to other validation approaches such as K-fold (98.89%) and generalization (97.75%). Furthermore, these results were supported by confusion matrix results where only 10 failures were found when tested with 5000 images

Fingerprint recognition systems have been applied widely to adopt accurate and reliable biometric identification between individuals. Deep learning, especially Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has made a tremendous success in the field of computer vision for pattern recognition. Several approaches have been applied to reconstruct fingerprint images. However, these algorithms encountered problems with various overlapping patterns and poor quality on the images. In this work, a convolutional neural network autoencoder has been used to reconstruct fingerprint images. An autoencoder is a technique, which is able to replicate data in the images. The advantage of convolutional neural networks makes it suitable for feature extraction. Four datasets of fingerprint images have been used to prove the robustness of the proposed architecture. The dataset of fingerprint images has been collected from various real resources. These datasets include a fingerprint verification competition (FVC2004) database, which has been distorted. The proposed approach has been assessed by calculating the cumulative match characteristics (CMC) between the reconstructed and the original features. We obtained promising results of identification rate from four datasets of fingerprints images (Dataset I, Dataset II, Dataset III, Dataset IV) with 98.1%, 97%, 95.9%, and 95.02% respectively by CNN autoencoder. The proposed architecture was tested and compared to the other state-of-the-art methods. The achieved experimental results show that the proposed solution is suitable for recreating a complex context of fingerprinting images

Biometrics, such as fingerprint, iris, face, hand print, hand vein, speech and gait recognition, etc., as a means of identity management have become commonplace nowadays for various applications. Biometric systems follow a typical pipeline, that is composed of separate preprocessing, feature extraction and classification. Deep learning as a data-driven representation learning approach has been shown to be a promising alternative to conventional data-agnostic and handcrafted pre-processing and feature extraction for biometric systems. Furthermore, deep learning offers an end-to-end learning paradigm to unify preprocessing, feature extraction, and recognition, based solely on biometric data. This Special Issue has collected 12 high-quality, state-of-the-art research papers that deal with challenging issues in advanced biometric systems based on deep learning. The 12 papers can be divided into 4 categories according to biometric modality; namely, face biometrics, medical electronic signals (EEG and ECG), voice print, and others

The book attempts to introduce a gentle introduction to the field of Facial Micro Expressions Recognition (FMER) using Color and Depth images, with the aid of MATLAB programming environment. FMER is a subset of image processing and it is a multidisciplinary topic to analysis. So, it requires familiarity with other topics of Artifactual Intelligence (AI) such as machine learning, digital image processing, psychology and more. So, it is a great opportunity to write a book which covers all of these topics for beginner to professional readers in the field of AI and even without having background of AI. Our goal is to provide a standalone introduction in the field of MFER analysis in the form of theorical descriptions for readers with no background in image processing with reproducible Matlab practical examples. Also, we describe any basic definitions for FMER analysis and MATLAB library which is used in the text, that helps final reader to apply the experiments in the real-world applications. We believe that this book is suitable for students, researchers, and professionals alike, who need to develop practical skills, along with a basic understanding of the field. We expect that, after reading this book, the reader feels comfortable with different key stages such as color and depth image processing, color and depth image representation, classification, machine learning, facial micro-expressions recognition, feature extraction and dimensionality reduction. The book attempts to introduce a gentle introduction to the field of Facial Micro Expressions Recognition (FMER) using Color and Depth images, with the aid of MATLAB programming environment.Comment: This is the second edition of the boo

Use of Pattern Classification Algorithms to Interpret Passive and Active Data Streams from a Walking-Speed Robotic Sensor Platform

In order to perform useful tasks for us, robots must have the ability to notice, recognize, and respond to objects and events in their environment. This requires the acquisition and synthesis of information from a variety of sensors. Here we investigate the performance of a number of sensor modalities in an unstructured outdoor environment, including the Microsoft Kinect, thermal infrared camera, and coffee can radar. Special attention is given to acoustic echolocation measurements of approaching vehicles, where an acoustic parametric array propagates an audible signal to the oncoming target and the Kinect microphone array records the reflected backscattered signal. Although useful information about the target is hidden inside the noisy time domain measurements, the Dynamic Wavelet Fingerprint process (DWFP) is used to create a time-frequency representation of the data. A small-dimensional feature vector is created for each measurement using an intelligent feature selection process for use in statistical pattern classification routines. Using our experimentally measured data from real vehicles at 50 m, this process is able to correctly classify vehicles into one of five classes with 94% accuracy. Fully three-dimensional simulations allow us to study the nonlinear beam propagation and interaction with real-world targets to improve classification results

Improved Human Face Recognition by Introducing a New Cnn Arrangement and Hierarchical Method

    Get PDF
Human face recognition has become one of the most attractive topics in the fields ‎of biometrics due to its wide applications. The face is a part of the body that carries ‎the most information regarding identification in human interactions. Features such ‎as the composition of facial components, skin tone, face\u27s central axis, distances ‎between eyes, and many more, alongside the other biometrics, are used ‎unconsciously by the brain to distinguish a person. Indeed, analyzing the facial ‎features could be the first method humans use to identify a person in their lives. ‎As one of the main biometric measures, human face recognition has been utilized in ‎various commercial applications over the past two decades. From banking to smart ‎advertisement and from border security to mobile applications. These are a few ‎examples that show us how far these methods have come. We can confidently say ‎that the techniques for face recognition have reached an acceptable level of ‎accuracy to be implemented in some real-life applications. However, there are other ‎applications that could benefit from improvement. Given the increasing demand ‎for the topic and the fact that nowadays, we have almost all the infrastructure that ‎we might need for our application, make face recognition an appealing topic. ‎ When we are evaluating the quality of a face recognition method, there are some ‎benchmarks that we should consider: accuracy, speed, and complexity are the main ‎parameters. Of course, we can measure other aspects of the algorithm, such as size, ‎precision, cost, etc. But eventually, every one of those parameters will contribute to ‎improving one or some of these three concepts of the method. Then again, although ‎we can see a significant level of accuracy in existing algorithms, there is still much ‎room for improvement in speed and complexity. In addition, the accuracy of the ‎mentioned methods highly depends on the properties of the face images. In other ‎words, uncontrolled situations and variables like head pose, occlusion, lighting, ‎image noise, etc., can affect the results dramatically. ‎ Human face recognition systems are used in either identification or verification. In ‎verification, the system\u27s main goal is to check if an input belongs to a pre-determined tag or a person\u27s ID. ‎Almost every face recognition system consists of four major steps. These steps are ‎pre-processing, face detection, feature extraction, and classification. Improvement ‎in each of these steps will lead to the overall enhancement of the system. In this ‎work, the main objective is to propose new, improved and enhanced methods in ‎each of those mentioned steps, evaluate the results by comparing them with other ‎existing techniques and investigate the outcome of the proposed system.
