    Advancing security in IoT-driven critical infrastructure: a focus on smart transportation system.

    As new technological platforms such as the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are gradually emerging and being integrated into critical infrastructures which are subjected to digital attacks. i.e., the critical systems are vulnerable to new cybersecurity threatsand thus requires corresponding security approach to challenge the threats.It is therefore imperative to identify the various types of possible cyber-attacks on the systems and develop a security framework to manage the associated security risks. IoT-based critical infrastructure systemslike smart healthcare, smart transportation and smart manufacturing are prone to attacks such as Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, brute-force attacks, Man-in-the-Middle attacks (MiTM), Stuxnet computer virus etc. This paper focuses on a detailed study of the smart transportation system and its security issues; various threat vectors used by the attackers are examinedalongsidecorresponding countermeasures. Additionally,an in-depth analysis on how an identified malicious attack on smart transportationcould be achieved was carried out by using an open-source vehicular network tool called Vehicle in Network Simulation (Veins). A detailed evaluation of the impact of MiTM attack was then carried out based on the evaluation metrics. Results from the simulation results indicate that attacks on the built STSthesis vehicular network have a higher influence on the network. Also, although the STSthesis was a basic network that was run with considerable node, limited time and injected malicious node, the impact of the MiTM attack was still visible. Furthermore, implementing the elliptic-curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) in the early stage of design and implementation will prevent the MiTM attacks from intercepting messages between legitimate nodes

    Industrial Control Systems (ICSs) are responsible for the automation of different processes and the overall control of systems that include highly sensitive potential targets such as nuclear facilities, energy-distribution, water-supply, and mass-transit systems. Given the increased complexity and rapid evolvement of their threat landscape, and the fact that these systems form part of the Critical National infrastructure (CNI), makes them an emerging domain of conflict, terrorist attacks, and a playground for cyberexploitation. Existing layered-defence approaches are increasingly criticised for their inability to adequately protect against resourceful and persistent adversaries. It is therefore essential that emerging techniques, such as orthogonality, be combined with existing security strategies to leverage defence advantages against adaptive and often asymmetrical attack vectors. The concept of orthogonality is relatively new and unexplored in an ICS environment and consists of having assurance control as well as functional control at each layer. Our work seeks to partially articulate a framework where multiple functional and assurance controls are introduced at each layer of ICS architectural design to further enhance security while maintaining critical real-time transfer of command and control traffic

    As the Internet and society become ever more integrated so the number of Internet users continues to grow. Today there are 1.6 billion Internet users. They use its services to work from home, shop for gifts, socialise with friends, research the family holiday and manage their finances. Through generating both wealth and employment the Internet and our economies have also become interwoven. The growth of the Internet has attracted hackers and organised criminals. Users are targeted for financial gain through malware and social engineering attacks. Industry has responded to the growing threat by developing a range defences: antivirus software, firewalls and intrusion detection systems are all readily available. Yet the Internet security problem continues to grow and Internet crime continues to thrive. Warnings on the latest application vulnerabilities, phishing scams and malware epidemics are announced regularly and serve to heighten user anxiety. Not only are users targeted for attack but so too are businesses, corporations, public utilities and even states. Implementing network security remains an error prone task for the modern Internet user. In response this thesis explores whether intrusion detection and management can be effectively offered as a web service to users in order to better protect them and heighten their awareness of the Internet security threat

    Enhancing the security of wireless sensor network based home automation systems

    Home automation systems (HASs)seek to improve the quality of life for individuals through the automation of household devices. Recently, there has been a trend, in academia and industry, to research and develop low-cost Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) based HASs (Varchola et al. 2007). WSNs are designed to achieve a low-cost wireless networking solution, through the incorporation of limited processing, memory, and power resources. Consequently, providing secure and reliable remote access for resource limited WSNs, such as WSN based HASs, poses a significant challenge (Perrig et al. 2004). This thesis introduces the development of a hybrid communications approach to increase the resistance of WSN based HASs to remote DoS flooding attacks targeted against a third party. The approach is benchmarked against the dominant GHS remote access approach for WSN based HASs (Bergstrom et al. 2001), on a WSN based HAS test-bed, and shown to provide a minimum of a 58.28%, on average 59.85%, and a maximum of 61.45% increase in remote service availability during a DoS attack. Additionally, a virtual home incorporating a cryptographic based DoS detection algorithm, is developed to increase resistance to remote DoS flooding attacks targeted directly at WSN based HASs. The approach is benchmarked against D-WARD (Mirkovic 2003), the most effective DoS defence identified from the research, and shown to provide a minimum 84.70%, an average 91.13% and a maximum 95.6% reduction in packets loss on a WSN based HAS during a DoS flooding attack. Moreover, the approach is extended with the integration of a virtual home, hybrid communication approach, and a distributed denial of defence server to increase resistance to remote DoS attacks targeting the home gateway. The approach is again benchmarked against the D-WARD defence and shown to decrease the connection latency experienced by remote users by a minimum of 90.14%, an average 90.90%, and a maximum 91.88%.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

This article presents a holistic review of cybersecurityattacks on sensors and threats regardingmulti-modal sensor fusion. A compre-hensive review of cyberattacks on intra-vehicle and inter-vehicle communicationsis presented afterward. Besides the analysis of conventional cybersecurity threatsand countermeasures for CAV systems,a detailed review of modern machinelearning, federated learning, and blockchain approach is also conducted to safe-guard CAVs.
