    The cultural evolution of coinage as an informational system

    The invention of coined money significantly changed economic history, by introducing a convenient and universal medium of exchange, whose value is regulated and guaranteed by a political authority. In order to be used as a means of payment, coins need to be recognized as valid and trustworthy. Combining carefully designed material features with inscriptions and images, they form a system of symbols that store and transmit information, primarily of an economic nature. The aim of this thesis was to investigate how coins encode information, and to understand how historical dynamics and human cognition shaped their evolution as an informational system. These questions were explored over three studies. The first study investigated the influence of changing political and economic circumstances in the ancient Mediterranean (7th - 1st ct. BCE) on the informative role of graphic designs as marks of issuing authority and monetary value. The second study discussed the advantages and challenges of digitization, standardization and quantitative approaches to cultural data, with a focus on coin iconography. The third study examined the representation and perception of monetary value in the properties of contemporary coins. This thesis shows how we can examine the structure and evolution of coins within an interdisciplinary framework, using quantitative methods, combined with insights from evolutionary and cognitive anthropology, and information theory. The increasing availability of expertly curated digital collections opens more possibilities for developing quantitative approaches necessary for proper interpretation of the processes which shaped observed patterns in cultural data. The approach taken in this thesis complements the research in numismatics and economic history on the origins and development of coinage, while also highlighting the possibilities of using historical artefacts to study large-scale patterns in the evolution and transmission of cultural traits

    Designing Statistical Language Learners: Experiments on Noun Compounds

    The goal of this thesis is to advance the exploration of the statistical language learning design space. In pursuit of that goal, the thesis makes two main theoretical contributions: (i) it identifies a new class of designs by specifying an architecture for natural language analysis in which probabilities are given to semantic forms rather than to more superficial linguistic elements; and (ii) it explores the development of a mathematical theory to predict the expected accuracy of statistical language learning systems in terms of the volume of data used to train them. The theoretical work is illustrated by applying statistical language learning designs to the analysis of noun compounds. Both syntactic and semantic analysis of noun compounds are attempted using the proposed architecture. Empirical comparisons demonstrate that the proposed syntactic model is significantly better than those previously suggested, approaching the performance of human judges on the same task, and that the proposed semantic model, the first statistical approach to this problem, exhibits significantly better accuracy than the baseline strategy. These results suggest that the new class of designs identified is a promising one.     Dealing with linguistic mismatches for automatic speech recognition

    Recent breakthroughs in automatic speech recognition (ASR) have resulted in a word error rate (WER) on par with human transcribers on the English Switchboard benchmark. However, dealing with linguistic mismatches between the training and testing data is still a significant challenge that remains unsolved. Under the monolingual environment, it is well-known that the performance of ASR systems degrades significantly when presented with the speech from speakers with different accents, dialects, and speaking styles than those encountered during system training. Under the multi-lingual environment, ASR systems trained on a source language achieve even worse performance when tested on another target language because of mismatches in terms of the number of phonemes, lexical ambiguity, and power of phonotactic constraints provided by phone-level n-grams. In order to address the issues of linguistic mismatches for current ASR systems, my dissertation investigates both knowledge-gnostic and knowledge-agnostic solutions. In the first part, classic theories relevant to acoustics and articulatory phonetics that present capability of being transferred across a dialect continuum from local dialects to another standardized language are re-visited. Experiments demonstrate the potentials that acoustic correlates in the vicinity of landmarks could help to build a bridge for dealing with mismatches across difference local or global varieties in a dialect continuum. In the second part, we design an end-to-end acoustic modeling approach based on connectionist temporal classification loss and propose to link the training of acoustics and accent altogether in a manner similar to the learning process in human speech perception. This joint model not only performed well on ASR with multiple accents but also boosted accuracies of accent identification task in comparison to separately-trained models

    An Adaptive Machine Learning Methodology Applied to Neuromarketing Analysis: Prediction of Consumer Behaviour Regarding the Key Elements of the Packaging Design of an Educational Toy

    This research is in response to the question of which aspects of package design are more relevant to consumers, when purchasing educational toys. Neuromarketing techniques are used, and we propose a methodology for predicting which areas attract the attention of potential customers. The aim of the present study was to propose a model that optimizes the communication design of educational toys’ packaging. The data extracted from the experiments was studied using new analytical models, based on machine learning techniques, to predict which area of packaging is observed in the first instance and which areas are never the focus of attention of potential customers. The results suggest that the most important elements are the graphic details of the packaging and the methodology fully analyzes and segments these areas, according to social circumstance and which consumer type is observing the packaging
