Developing thesis research remains the central requirement of graduation for most universities. Lack of personal knowledge and experience are among the main challenges facing post graduate students during their research completion. Failure to resolve these issues could lead to drop out or delay their graduation. It is considered that previously unacquainted research students who have already gone through the research writing can be a good knowledge and experience resource for those who have just started. It is a highly desirable to help post graduate students in order to overcome their difficulties in research development through facilitating experience and knowledge-sharing. Online communities and social networking have become important aspects in information systems technology nowadays. Developing or emerging these online communities for connecting educators can establish a powerful form of sustained professional learning. The purpose of this study is to develop web based community of knowledge-creation for research development, to help post graduate students overcome their research development difficulties, and to achieve such strategically professional sustainability. Multi-methodological approach was used for this study as it is more advisable for information system development research. The research was started by observation, literature review, and interviews to understand the current situation and identify required web tools and knowledge conversions within research development activities; next a questionnaire is used to develop the proposed model. Finally the information system was developed based on the proposed model. The user acceptance test proofs that the proposed model and developed system can successfully implemented and help post graduate students to overcome their difficulties

From Social Tagging to Social Hierarchies: Sharing Deeper Structural Knowledge in Web 2.0

    Get PDF
Social tagging systems, such as del.icio.us, have helped users find and reuse information by sharing individuals’ structural knowledge, i.e., the knowledge of relationships among documents and concepts. Besides being an Internet phenomenon, social tagging can help organizations manage their intranet document repositories. The structural knowledge embedded in tags is flat, shallow, and often ambiguous however. We develop a theoretical model to argue for potential benefits of sharing deeper structural knowledge in an electronic document repository through personal document hierarchies. Based on the theoretical model, we design a “social hierarchies” system. Deployment and exploratory study confirm the benefits of sharing personal hierarchies in a collaborative knowledge work environment and suggest future research directions

Geovisual analytics for spatial decision support: Setting the research agenda

    Get PDF
This article summarizes the results of the workshop on Visualization, Analytics & Spatial Decision Support, which took place at the GIScience conference in September 2006. The discussions at the workshop and analysis of the state of the art have revealed a need in concerted cross‐disciplinary efforts to achieve substantial progress in supporting space‐related decision making. The size and complexity of real‐life problems together with their ill‐defined nature call for a true synergy between the power of computational techniques and the human capabilities to analyze, envision, reason, and deliberate. Existing methods and tools are yet far from enabling this synergy. Appropriate methods can only appear as a result of a focused research based on the achievements in the fields of geovisualization and information visualization, human‐computer interaction, geographic information science, operations research, data mining and machine learning, decision science, cognitive science, and other disciplines. The name ‘Geovisual Analytics for Spatial Decision Support’ suggested for this new research direction emphasizes the importance of visualization and interactive visual interfaces and the link with the emerging research discipline of Visual Analytics. This article, as well as the whole special issue, is meant to attract the attention of scientists with relevant expertise and interests to the major challenges requiring multidisciplinary efforts and to promote the establishment of a dedicated research community where an appropriate range of competences is combined with an appropriate breadth of thinking

This research aims to provide a better understanding on how firms stimulate knowledge sharing through the utilization of collaboration tools, in particular Emergent Social Software Platforms (ESSPs). It focuses on the distinctive applications of ESSPs and on the initiatives contributing to maximize its advantages. In the first part of the research, I have itemized all types of existing collaboration tools and classify them in different categories according to their capabilities, objectives and according to their faculty for promoting knowledge sharing. In the second part, and based on an exploratory case study at Cisco Systems, I have identified the main applications of an existing enterprise social software platform named Webex Social. By combining a qualitative and quantitative approach, as well as combining data collected from survey’s results and from the analysis of the company’s documents, I am expecting to maximize the outcome of this investigation and reduce the risk of bias. Although effects cannot be universalized based on one single case study, some utilization patterns have been underlined from the data collected and potential trends in managing knowledge have been observed. The results of the research have also enabled identifying most of the constraints experienced by the users of the firm’s social software platform. Utterly, this research should provide a primary framework for firms planning to create or implement a social software platform and for firms willing to increase adoption levels and to promote the overall participation of users. It highlights the common traps that should be avoided by developers when designing a social software platform and the capabilities that it should inherently carry to support an effective knowledge management strategy

Nowadays, business companies cannot be seen merely as a physical place where employees execute their daily functions. The progress and the development of technologies has made possible the continuous interconnection and interaction among co-workers, allowing to carry on own activities also if are not physically present. It became a key factor for companies or teams geographically separated which need to unit their efforts to achieve a shared goal. The aim of many companies and workers it is, indeed, to use these new technologies not merely to communicate with remote team members, but rather to take advantage of their tools in order to improve knowledge work in workplace day by day. Although there is a general agreement about the development in the future of these platforms, many companies and workers have still not understood completely the potential benefits. Thus, the aim of this work is to find and define a number of benefits from the organizational and collaborative point of view regarding the implementation of a social media platform within companies. Moreover, in order to make aware the subjects interested, here it is proposed also a number of challenges during their usage, that they will be faced during the implementation and the exploitation of the system. Finally, considering the bounds between knowledge sharing and enterprise social media platforms, with the willingness of people as common factors of both, will be analysed also this relationship in order to find the enabling factors for knowledge sharing which can make easier the social media adoption in teamwork and organizations
