Machine Learning Research Trends in Africa: A 30 Years Overview with Bibliometric Analysis Review
In this paper, a critical bibliometric analysis study is conducted, coupled
with an extensive literature survey on recent developments and associated
applications in machine learning research with a perspective on Africa. The
presented bibliometric analysis study consists of 2761 machine learning-related
documents, of which 98% were articles with at least 482 citations published in
903 journals during the past 30 years. Furthermore, the collated documents were
retrieved from the Science Citation Index EXPANDED, comprising research
publications from 54 African countries between 1993 and 2021. The bibliometric
study shows the visualization of the current landscape and future trends in
machine learning research and its application to facilitate future
collaborative research and knowledge exchange among authors from different
research institutions scattered across the African continent
Estudo da remodelagem reversa miocárdica através da análise proteómica do miocárdio e do líquido pericárdico
Valve replacement remains as the standard therapeutic option for aortic
stenosis patients, aiming at abolishing pressure overload and triggering
myocardial reverse remodeling. However, despite the instant hemodynamic
benefit, not all patients show complete regression of myocardial hypertrophy,
being at higher risk for adverse outcomes, such as heart failure. The current
comprehension of the biological mechanisms underlying an incomplete reverse
remodeling is far from complete. Furthermore, definitive prognostic tools and
ancillary therapies to improve the outcome of the patients undergoing valve
replacement are missing. To help abridge these gaps, a combined myocardial
(phospho)proteomics and pericardial fluid proteomics approach was followed,
taking advantage of human biopsies and pericardial fluid collected during
surgery and whose origin anticipated a wealth of molecular information
contained therein.
From over 1800 and 750 proteins identified, respectively, in the myocardium
and in the pericardial fluid of aortic stenosis patients, a total of 90 dysregulated
proteins were detected. Gene annotation and pathway enrichment analyses,
together with discriminant analysis, are compatible with a scenario of increased
pro-hypertrophic gene expression and protein synthesis, defective ubiquitinproteasome system activity, proclivity to cell death (potentially fed by
complement activity and other extrinsic factors, such as death receptor
activators), acute-phase response, immune system activation and fibrosis.
Specific validation of some targets through immunoblot techniques and
correlation with clinical data pointed to complement C3 β chain, Muscle Ring
Finger protein 1 (MuRF1) and the dual-specificity Tyr-phosphorylation
regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) as potential markers of an incomplete
response. In addition, kinase prediction from phosphoproteome data suggests
that the modulation of casein kinase 2, the family of IκB kinases, glycogen
synthase kinase 3 and DYRK1A may help improve the outcome of patients
undergoing valve replacement. Particularly, functional studies with DYRK1A+/-
cardiomyocytes show that this kinase may be an important target to treat
cardiac dysfunction, provided that mutant cells presented a different response
to stretch and reduced ability to develop force (active tension).
This study opens many avenues in post-aortic valve replacement reverse
remodeling research. In the future, gain-of-function and/or loss-of-function
studies with isolated cardiomyocytes or with animal models of aortic bandingdebanding will help disclose the efficacy of targeting the surrogate therapeutic
targets. Besides, clinical studies in larger cohorts will bring definitive proof of
complement C3, MuRF1 and DYRK1A prognostic value.A substituição da válvula aórtica continua a ser a opção terapêutica de
referência para doentes com estenose aórtica e visa a eliminação da
sobrecarga de pressão, desencadeando a remodelagem reversa miocárdica.
Contudo, apesar do benefício hemodinâmico imediato, nem todos os pacientes
apresentam regressão completa da hipertrofia do miocárdio, ficando com maior
risco de eventos adversos, como a insuficiência cardíaca. Atualmente, os
mecanismos biológicos subjacentes a uma remodelagem reversa incompleta
ainda não são claros. Além disso, não dispomos de ferramentas de
prognóstico definitivos nem de terapias auxiliares para melhorar a condição
dos pacientes indicados para substituição da válvula. Para ajudar a resolver
estas lacunas, uma abordagem combinada de (fosfo)proteómica e proteómica
para a caracterização, respetivamente, do miocárdio e do líquido pericárdico
foi seguida, tomando partido de biópsias e líquidos pericárdicos recolhidos em
ambiente cirúrgico.
Das mais de 1800 e 750 proteínas identificadas, respetivamente, no miocárdio
e no líquido pericárdico dos pacientes com estenose aórtica, um total de 90
proteínas desreguladas foram detetadas. As análises de anotação de genes,
de enriquecimento de vias celulares e discriminativa corroboram um cenário de
aumento da expressão de genes pro-hipertróficos e de síntese proteica, um
sistema ubiquitina-proteassoma ineficiente, uma tendência para morte celular
(potencialmente acelerada pela atividade do complemento e por outros fatores
extrínsecos que ativam death receptors), com ativação da resposta de fase
aguda e do sistema imune, assim como da fibrose.
A validação de alguns alvos específicos através de immunoblot e correlação
com dados clínicos apontou para a cadeia β do complemento C3, a Muscle
Ring Finger protein 1 (MuRF1) e a dual-specificity Tyr-phosphoylation
regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A) como potenciais marcadores de uma resposta
incompleta. Por outro lado, a predição de cinases a partir do fosfoproteoma,
sugere que a modulação da caseína cinase 2, a família de cinases do IκB, a
glicogénio sintase cinase 3 e da DYRK1A pode ajudar a melhorar a condição
dos pacientes indicados para intervenção. Em particular, a avaliação funcional
de cardiomiócitos DYRK1A+/- mostraram que esta cinase pode ser um alvo
importante para tratar a disfunção cardíaca, uma vez que os miócitos mutantes
responderam de forma diferente ao estiramento e mostraram uma menor
capacidade para desenvolver força (tensão ativa).
Este estudo levanta várias hipóteses na investigação da remodelagem reversa.
No futuro, estudos de ganho e/ou perda de função realizados em
cardiomiócitos isolados ou em modelos animais de banding-debanding da
aorta ajudarão a testar a eficácia de modular os potenciais alvos terapêuticos
encontrados. Além disso, estudos clínicos em coortes de maior dimensão
trarão conclusões definitivas quanto ao valor de prognóstico do complemento

Management controls, government regulations, customer involvement: Evidence from a Chinese family-owned business
This research reports on a case study of a family-owned elevator manufacturing company in China, where management control was sandwiched between the state policies and global customer production requirements. By analysing the role of government and customer, this thesis aimed to illustrate how management control operated in a family-owned business and to see how and why they do management control differently. In particular, it focused on how international production standards and existing Chinese industry policies translated into a set of the management control practices through a local network within the family-owned business I studied.
Based on an ethnographic approach to research, I spent six months in the field, conducted over 30 interviews, several conservations, and reviewed relevant internal documents to understand how management control (MC) techniques with humans cooperated in the company. I also understood how two layers of pressure have shaped company behaviour, and how a company located in a developing country is connecting with global network. I also found there is considerable tension among key actors and investigated how the company responded and managed it.
Drawing on Actor Network Theory (ANT), I analysed the interviews from key actors, examined the role of government regulations and customer requirements to see how management control being managed under two layers of pressure, i.e., the government regulations (e.g., labour, tax, environment control) and customer requirement (e.g., quality and production control). Management controls were an obligatory passage point (OPP), and transformation of those elements of Western production requirements and government requirements arrived at the Chinese local factory and influenced management control and budgeting.
The findings suggest that management control systems are not only a set of technical procedures, but it is also about managing tensions. This understanding shows a linear perspective on MC practices rather than a social perspective. However, when we use ANT as a theoretical perspective, we see those actors who, being obliged and sandwiched, and controlled by external forces for them to follow. Consequently, human actors must work in an unavoidable OPP. This is the tension they face which constructed mundane practices of MC. Hence, MCs are managing such tensions. This study contributes to management control research by analysing management controls in terms of OPP, extends our understanding by illustrating the role of the government and customers, and our understanding of family-owned business from a management controls perspective in a developing country
Examining the Impact of Personal Social Media Use at Work on Workplace Outcomes
A noticable shift is underway in today’s multi-generational workforce. As younger employees propel digital workforce transformation and embrace technology adoption in the workplace, organisations need to show they are forward-thinking in their digital transformation strategies, and the emergent integration of social media in organisations is reshaping internal communication strategies, in a bid to improve corporate reputations and foster employee engagement. However, the impact of personal social media use on psychological and behavioural workplace outcomes is still debatebale with contrasting results in the literature identifying both positive and negative effects on workplace outcomes among organisational employees.
This study seeks to examine this debate through the lens of social capital theory and study personal social media use at work using distinct variables of social use, cognitive use, and hedonic use. A quantitative analysis of data from 419 organisational employees in Jordan using SEM-PLS reveals that personal social media use at work is a double-edged sword as its impact differs by usage types. First, the social use of personal social media at work reduces job burnout, turnover intention, presenteeism, and absenteeism; it also increases job involvement and organisational citizen behaviour. Second, the cognitive use of personal social media at work increases job involvement, organisational citizen behaviour, employee adaptability, and decreases presenteeism and absenteeism; it also increases job burnout and turnover intention. Finally, the hedonic use of personal social media at work carries only negative effects by increasing job burnout and turnover intention.
This study contributes to managerial understanding by showing the impact of different types of personal social media usage and recommends that organisations not limit employee access to personal social media within work time, but rather focus on raising awareness of the negative effects of excessive usage on employee well-being and encourage low to moderate use of personal social media at work and other personal and work-related online interaction associated with positive workplace outcomes. It also clarifies the need for further research in regions such as the Middle East with distinct cultural and socio-economic contexts
Material Economies of South Yorkshire. The Organisation of Metal Production in Roman South Yorkshire.
This thesis aims to develop a model for the social organisation and production of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in South Yorkshire during the Roman period. This characterisation of the organisation of metallurgical activities is achieved through a combined methodology that will gather data from grey literature, published literature, as well as chemical, visual and microstructural analysis of metallurgical debris. The metallurgical practices in the study area are primarily rural in nature. These results are looked at through the lenses of Agency, Habitus, and the social construction of craft production. The movement of materials and people within the study area and local specialist practices are central in the interpretation of regional metalworking practices. Furthermore, models of craft production are critiqued, and an alternative modelisation process is suggested to characterise and understand the organisation of metal production in Roman South Yorkshire
Synthesis and Characterisation of Low-cost Biopolymeric/mineral Composite Systems and Evaluation of their Potential Application for Heavy Metal Removal
Heavy metal pollution and waste management are two major environmental problems faced in the world today. Anthropogenic sources of heavy metals, especially effluent from industries, are serious environmental and health concerns by polluting surface and ground waters. Similarly, on a global scale, thousands of tonnes of industrial and agricultural waste are discarded into the environment annually. There are several conventional methods to treat industrial effluents, including reverse osmosis, oxidation, filtration, flotation, chemical precipitation, ion exchange resins and adsorption. Among them, adsorption and ion exchange are known to be effective mechanisms for removing heavy metal pollution, especially if low-cost materials can be used.
This thesis was a study into materials that can be used to remove heavy metals from water using low-cost feedstock materials. The synthesis of low-cost composite matrices from agricultural and industrial by-products and low-cost organic and mineral sources was carried out. The feedstock materials being considered include chitosan (generated from industrial seafood waste), coir fibre (an agricultural by-product), spent coffee grounds (a by-product from coffee machines), hydroxyapatite (from bovine bone), and naturally sourced aluminosilicate minerals such as zeolite.
The novel composite adsorbents were prepared using commercially sourced HAp and bovine sourced HAp, with two types of adsorbents being synthesized, including two- and three-component composites. Standard synthetic methods such as precipitation were developed to synthesize these materials, followed by characterization of their structural, physical, and chemical properties (by using FTIR, TGA, SEM, EDX and XRD).
The synthesized materials were then evaluated for their ability to remove metal ions from solutions of heavy metals using single-metal ion type and two-metal ion type solution systems, using the model ion solutions, with quantification of their removal efficiency. It was followed by experimentation using the synthesized adsorbents for metal ion removal in complex systems such as an industrial input stream solution system obtained from a local timber treatment company.
Two-component composites were considered as control composites to compare the removal efficiency of the three-component composites against. The heavy metal removal experiments were conducted under a range of experimental conditions (e.g., pH, sorbent dose, initial metal ion concentration, time of contact). Of the four metal ion systems considered in this study (Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cr as chromate ions), Pb2+ ion removal by the composites was found to be the highest in single-metal and two-metal ion type solution systems, while chromate ion removal was found to be the lowest. The bovine bone-based hydroxyapatite (bHAp) composites were more efficient at removing the metal cations than composites formed from a commercially sourced hydroxyapatite (cHAp).
In industrial input stream solution systems (containing Cu, Cr and As), the Cu2+ ion removal was the highest, which aligned with the observations recorded in the single and two-metal ion type solution systems. Arsenate ion was removed to a higher extent than chromate ion using the three-component composites, while the removal of chromate ion was found to be higher than arsenate ion when using the two-component composites (i.e., the control system).
The project also aimed to elucidate the removal mechanisms of these synthesized composite materials by using appropriate adsorption and kinetic models. The adsorption of metal ions exhibited a range of adsorption behaviours as both the models (Langmuir and Freundlich) were found to fit most of the data recorded in different adsorption systems studied. The pseudo-second-order model was found to be the best fitted to describe the kinetics of heavy metal ion adsorption in all the composite adsorbent systems studied, in single-metal ion type and two-metal ion type solution systems. The ion-exchange mechanism was considered as one of the dominant mechanisms for the removal of cations (in single-metal and two-metal ion type solution systems) and arsenate ions (in industrial input stream solution systems) along with other adsorption mechanisms. In contrast, electrostatic attractions were considered to be the dominant mechanism of removal for chromate ions
Cooking the wild: the role of the Lundayeh of the Ulu Padas, (Sabah, Malaysia) in managing forest foods and shaping the landscape
This thesis provides an account of the Lundayeh subsistence system as found in the villages of Long Pasia and Long Mio, situated in the Ulu Padas, Sabah. The research focuses on Lundayeh food and diet, describing the diversity of resources used and the importance of forest foods. Comparison with studies from elsewhere in Borneo suggests that there are many similarities between Lundayeh practices and those of other highland peoples. These data are used to critically examine the concepts of 'wild' and 'wilderness', considering whether these concepts are meaningful, either analytically or for the Lundayeh. Investigation of the way in which the Lundayeh manipulate and manage their resources suggests that they have had a profound influence on their environment. Consequently, the Ulu Padas cannot be described as a wilderness, nor its resources as wild. The extent to which the Lundayeh themselves construct the categories of 'wild' and 'cultivated' foods is investigated through examining how these resources are owned, and their different roles in the diet. These data suggest that the Lundayeh recognise that there is no simple dichotomy of 'wild' and 'cultivated', but rather, that there is a gradation between these two categories. There is also evidence to suggest that the Lundayeh do not consider any resources as wild, in the sense of being uninfluenced by people. The environmental perceptions of the Lundayeh are also investigated, and how these have been shaped by their particular way of life, history, beliefs and knowledge systems. It is apparent that for the Lundayeh, the Ulu Padas is a cultural landscape. However, this is changing, as a result of recent social and environmental changes. This thesis concludes by examining the impact of changing perceptions on how the Lundayeh are managing their environment, and on their attitudes towards conservation
The International Political Economy of Land Reform and Conflict in Colombia 1936-2018
Why did land reforms attempted in 1936, 1961 and 1994 not lead to more equality, stability, and peace in Colombia? Using a theoretical framework informed by Gramscis theory of passive revolution, this study examines the origin of inequality and the propagation of conflict in Colombia by exploring the relationship between international political economy, production relations and class conflict surrounding three cases of land reform (1936, 1961 and 1994). I argue that land reforms have failed to address inequality and have exacerbated class conflicts for three interrelated reasons: 1) though campesinos demanded the redistribution of large estates, pro-capitalist land reforms left productive plantations intact and instead promoted access to lands in frontier areas where the state had little effective control over property rights; 2) demands for reforms emerged during 'commodity booms', when a bourgeois-peasant alliance in favour of capitalist expansion was possible, but during phases of subsequent crisis and price collapse, agrarian reforms were coopted by landlord-bourgeois alliances that pushed the consolidation of larger, more productive holdings; 3) the failure of reforms to address popular demands for land contributed to an atmosphere of instability in which reactionary elites used popular unrest as a pretext for repression against opponents of capitalism with the support of international financial and military power. The result has been the intensification of land conflicts and several waves of landlord-led dispossession, popular resistance, and counterinsurgency in the 1940s-50s, 1960s-1970s and 1980s-2000s. Political instability in Colombia is indicative of the dynamics of passive revolution as the case lends itself to a Gramscian analysis of uneven development in the 20th century Latin American context. Colombia's experience shows the limits of "passive revolutionary" land reforms which may unite diverse constituencies under certain conditions, but which leave the material and social foundations of conflict fundamentally unchanged, leaving campesinos vulnerable to shifts in global market conditions. This leads me to the conclusion that there will be no stable peace in Colombia without redistributive land reform. Redistribution has been the demand of the agrarian social movement since the 1930s but has been consistently denied in land reforms during broader processes of passive revolution that favour large-scale corporate farming, natural resource development and the debasement and exploitation of labour through dispossession in a context of unevenly expanding capitalism
