Time-dependent stochastic shortest path(s) algorithms for a scheduled transportation network
Following on from our work concerning travellersâ preferences in public transportation networks (Wu and Hartley, 2004), we introduce the concept of stochasticity to our algorithms. Stochasticity greatly increases the complexity of the route finding problem, so greater algorithmic efficiency becomes imperative. Public transportation networks (buses, trains) have two important features: edges can only be traversed at certain points in time and the weights of these edges change in a day and have an uncertainty associated with them. These features determine that a public transportation network is a stochastic and time-dependent network. Finding multiple shortest paths in a both stochastic and time-dependent network is currently regarded as the most difficult task in the route finding problems (Loui, 1983). This paper discusses the use of k-shortest-paths (KSP) algorithms to find optimal route(s) through a network in which the edge weights are defined by probability distributions. Tractable Pathfinding for the Stochastic On-Time Arrival Problem
We present a new and more efficient technique for computing the route that
maximizes the probability of on-time arrival in stochastic networks, also known
as the path-based stochastic on-time arrival (SOTA) problem. Our primary
contribution is a pathfinding algorithm that uses the solution to the
policy-based SOTA problem---which is of pseudo-polynomial-time complexity in
the time budget of the journey---as a search heuristic for the optimal path. In
particular, we show that this heuristic can be exceptionally efficient in
practice, effectively making it possible to solve the path-based SOTA problem
as quickly as the policy-based SOTA problem. Our secondary contribution is the
extension of policy-based preprocessing to path-based preprocessing for the
SOTA problem. In the process, we also introduce Arc-Potentials, a more
efficient generalization of Stochastic Arc-Flags that can be used for both
policy- and path-based SOTA. After developing the pathfinding and preprocessing
algorithms, we evaluate their performance on two different real-world networks.
To the best of our knowledge, these techniques provide the most efficient
computation strategy for the path-based SOTA problem for general probability

Stochastic on-time arrival problem in transit networks
This article considers the stochastic on-time arrival problem in transit
networks where both the travel time and the waiting time for transit services
are stochastic. A specific challenge of this problem is the combinatorial
solution space due to the unknown ordering of transit line arrivals. We propose
a network structure appropriate to the online decision-making of a passenger,
including boarding, waiting and transferring. In this framework, we design a
dynamic programming algorithm that is pseudo-polynomial in the number of
transit stations and travel time budget, and exponential in the number of
transit lines at a station, which is a small number in practice. To reduce the
search space, we propose a definition of transit line dominance, and techniques
to identify dominance, which decrease the computation time by up to 90% in
numerical experiments. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted on both a

Non-Zero Sum Games for Reactive Synthesis
In this invited contribution, we summarize new solution concepts useful for
the synthesis of reactive systems that we have introduced in several recent
publications. These solution concepts are developed in the context of non-zero
sum games played on graphs. They are part of the contributions obtained in the

Informed RRT*: Optimal Sampling-based Path Planning Focused via Direct Sampling of an Admissible Ellipsoidal Heuristic
Rapidly-exploring random trees (RRTs) are popular in motion planning because
they find solutions efficiently to single-query problems. Optimal RRTs (RRT*s)
extend RRTs to the problem of finding the optimal solution, but in doing so
asymptotically find the optimal path from the initial state to every state in
the planning domain. This behaviour is not only inefficient but also
inconsistent with their single-query nature.
For problems seeking to minimize path length, the subset of states that can
improve a solution can be described by a prolate hyperspheroid. We show that
unless this subset is sampled directly, the probability of improving a solution
becomes arbitrarily small in large worlds or high state dimensions. In this
paper, we present an exact method to focus the search by directly sampling this
subset.
The advantages of the presented sampling technique are demonstrated with a
new algorithm, Informed RRT*. This method retains the same probabilistic
guarantees on completeness and optimality as RRT* while improving the
convergence rate and final solution quality. We present the algorithm as a
simple modification to RRT* that could be further extended by more advanced
path-planning algorithms. We show experimentally that it outperforms RRT* in
rate of convergence, final solution cost, and ability to find difficult
passages while demonstrating less dependence on the state dimension and range

Solving a robust airline crew pairing problem with column generation
In this study, we solve a robust version of the airline crew pairing problem. Our concept of robustness was partially shaped during our discussions with small local airlines in Turkey which may have to add a set of extra flights into their schedule at short notice during operation. Thus, robustness in this case is related to the ability of accommodating these extra flights at the time of operation by disrupting the original plans as minimally as possible. We focus on the crew pairing aspect of robustness and prescribe that the planned crew pairings incorporate a number of predefined recovery solutions for each potential extra flight. These solutions are implemented only if necessary for recovery purposes and involve either inserting an extra flight into an existing pairing or partially swapping the flights in two existing pairings in order to cover an extra flight. The resulting mathematical programming model follows the conventional set covering formulation of the airline crew pairing problem typically solved by column generation with an additional complication. The model includes constraints that depend on the columns due to the robustness consideration and grows not only column-wise but also row-wise as new columns are generated. To solve this dicult model, we propose a row and column generation approach. This approach requires a set of modifications to the multi-label shortest path problem for pricing out new columns (pairings) and various mechanisms to handle the simultaneous increase in the number of rows and columns in the restricted master problem during column generation.
