A field programmable gate array based modular motion control platform

    Get PDF
The expectations from motion control systems have been rising day by day. As the systems become more complex, conventional motion control systems can not achieve to meet all the specifications with optimized results. This creates the necessity of fundamental changes in the infrastructure of the system. Field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology enables the reconfiguration of the digital hardware, thus dissolving the necessity of infrastructural changes for minor manipulations in the hardware even if the system is deployed. An FPGA based hardware system shrinks the size of the hardware hence the cost. FPGAs also provide better power ratings for the systems as well as a more reliable system with improved performance. As a trade off, the development is rather more difficult than software based systems, which also affects the research and development time of the overall system. In this paper a level of abstraction is introduced in order to diminish the requirement of advanced hardware description language (HDL) knowledge for implementing motion control systems thoroughly on an FPGA. The intellectual property library consists of synthesizable hardware modules specifically implemented for motion control purposes. Other parts of a motion control system, like user interface and trajectory generation, are implemented as software functions in order to protect the modularity of the system. There are also several external hardware designs for interfacing and driving various types of actuators

An Open-Source 7-Axis, Robotic Platform to Enable Dexterous Procedures within CT Scanners

This paper describes the design, manufacture, and performance of a highly dexterous, low-profile, 7 Degree-of-Freedom (DOF) robotic arm for CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy. Direct CT guidance allows physicians to localize tumours quickly; however, needle insertion is still performed by hand. This system is mounted to a fully active gantry superior to the patient's head and teleoperated by a radiologist. Unlike other similar robots, this robot's fully serial-link approach uses a unique combination of belt and cable drives for high-transparency and minimal-backlash, allowing for an expansive working area and numerous approach angles to targets all while maintaining a small in-bore cross-section of less than 16cm216cm^2. Simulations verified the system's expansive collision free work-space and ability to hit targets across the entire chest, as required for lung cancer biopsy. Targeting error is on average <1mm<1mm on a teleoperated accuracy task, illustrating the system's sufficient accuracy to perform biopsy procedures. The system is designed for lung biopsies due to the large working volume that is required for reaching peripheral lung lesions, though, with its large working volume and small in-bore cross-sectional area, the robotic system is effectively a general-purpose CT-compatible manipulation device for percutaneous procedures. Finally, with the considerable development time undertaken in designing a precise and flexible-use system and with the desire to reduce the burden of other researchers in developing algorithms for image-guided surgery, this system provides open-access, and to the best of our knowledge, is the first open-hardware image-guided biopsy robot of its kind.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, final submission to IROS 201

Last Generation Mechatronics: a Two-level Platform-based Reconfigurable Technology Approach

    Get PDF
As is well known mechatronic systems currently being designed and developed are often difficult multidisciplinary undertakings. Based on the intrinsic coupling of different implementation technologies, efficient design of mechatronic systems is of primordial importance for development of next generation industrial products. This paper is focused to current and future technological trends aimed to improve the design and implementation processes of mechatronic systems in an increasingly harsh industrial environment. Special attention is dedicated to introduction of the two-level platform-based reconfigurable technology approach. This strategy efficiently combines major advantages of both the hardware and software platform-based development trends in modern mecatronic systems. In order to support the unfolded theoretical arguments a last generation and versatile mechatronic system development is presented and discussed in the paper. The mentioned trends can be used as rough orientation for future mechatronic systems research and implementation activities

Machine Vision for intelligent Semi-Autonomous Transport (MV-iSAT)

AbstractThe primary focus was to develop a vision-based system suitable for the navigation and mapping of an indoor, single-floor environment. Devices incorporating an iSAT system could be used as ‘self-propelled’ shopping carts in high-end retail stores or as automated luggage routing systems in airports. The primary design feature of this system is its Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) core, chosen for its strengths in parallelism and pipelining. Image processing has been successfully demonstrated in real-time using FPGA hardware. Remote feedback and monitoring was broadcasted to a host computer via a local area network. Deadlines as short as 40ns have been met by a custom built memory-based arbitration scheme. It is hoped that the iSAT platform will provide the basis for future work on advanced FPGA-based machine-vision algorithms for mobile robotics

Alternative implementations of a fractional order control algorithm on FPGAs

Traditionally, microprocessor and digital signal processors have been used extensively in controlling simple processes, such as direct current motors. The Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are currently emerging as an alternative to the previously used devices in controlling all sorts of processes. The fractional order proportional-integrative control algorithm has the advantage of enhancing the closed loop performance as compared to traditional proportional-integrative controllers, but the implementation requires a higher number of computations. Implementations of control algorithms on FPGAs are nowadays much faster than implementations on microprocessors. This allows for a more accurate digital realization of the fractional order controller. The paper presents nine alternative implementations of such control algorithm on two different FPGA targets. The experimental results, considering DC motor speed control, show that double, fixed-point and integer data representation may be used efficiently for control purposes

FPGA Operating System for Hard Real Time Applications

In mechatronics, as in many others fields, one of the main aspect is the prototyping. Since the mechatronics covers a lot of complex applications, the availability of a common digital platform to use in all of them is a valid help in the prototyping phase of the project. FPGAs are often used as software acceleration in reconfigurable computers (RC), in which the operating system is a standard off-the-shelf real time operating system such as Linux and VxWorks. The object of the first part of the work is to develop a hardware operating system for mechatronic applications, which means that the FPGA device does not host a soft core processor, able to execute one only operation at a time, but it executes many concurrent hard real time functions allowing the user to develop his own application code taking advantage of the main features of the device: concurrency, flexibility and determinism. The second part of the thesis is related to the project of an electronic module that integrates logic and power devices to drive piezoelectric stack actuators and demonstrate experimentally the results in terms of control of piezoelectric stack tip displacement on atest bench. The electronic module controls up to four piezoelectric stack actuators and guarantees that the correct tip displacement is reached starting from a desired profile. The various opening/closing phases of the actuators are tuned in terms of slew rate, timings and values to reach during all the controlled phase. The control parameters are passed to the control unit by means of a host human machine interface or by an external electronic control unit that acts as a supervisor. This part will illustrate all the passages of the design starting from the constitutive equations of the piezoelectric material up to the final architecture of the control law and implementation passing through: • creation of a FEM model of the piezoelectric stack; • construction of the modal residues model; • FEM model validation; • identification of the electrical equivalent circuit of the piezoelectric stack; • design of the power driver circuit; • design of the control loops; A complete model validation is then performed and experimental results are presente

Aerial Manipulation Using a Novel Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Cyber-Physical System

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs) are attaining more and more maneuverability and sensory ability as a promising teleoperation platform for intelligent interaction with the environments. This work presents a novel 5-degree-of-freedom (DoF) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) cyber-physical system for aerial manipulation. This UAV's body is capable of exerting powerful propulsion force in the longitudinal direction, decoupling the translational dynamics and the rotational dynamics on the longitudinal plane. A high-level impedance control law is proposed to drive the vehicle for trajectory tracking and interaction with the environments. In addition, a vision-based real-time target identification and tracking method integrating a YOLO v3 real-time object detector with feature tracking, and morphological operations is proposed to be implemented onboard the vehicle with support of model compression techniques to eliminate latency caused by video wireless transmission and heavy computation burden on traditional teleoperation platforms.Comment: Newsletter of IEEE Technical Committee on Cyber-Physical System
