    The number of patient health data has been estimated to have reached 2314 exabytes by 2020. Traditional data analysis techniques are unsuitable to extract useful information from such a vast quantity of data. Thus, intelligent data analysis methods combining human expertise and computational models for accurate and in-depth data analysis are necessary. The technological revolution and medical advances made by combining vast quantities of available data, cloud computing services, and AI-based solutions can provide expert insight and analysis on a mass scale and at a relatively low cost. Computational intelligence (CI) methods, such as fuzzy models, artificial neural networks, evolutionary algorithms, and probabilistic methods, have recently emerged as promising tools for the development and application of intelligent systems in healthcare practice. CI-based systems can learn from data and evolve according to changes in the environments by taking into account the uncertainty characterizing health data, including omics data, clinical data, sensor, and imaging data. The use of CI in healthcare can improve the processing of such data to develop intelligent solutions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, as well as for the analysis of administrative processes. The present Special Issue on computational intelligence for healthcare is intended to show the potential and the practical impacts of CI techniques in challenging healthcare applications

    Understanding virus and microbial evolution in wildlife through meta-transcriptomics

    Wildlife harbors a substantial and largely undocumented diversity of RNA viruses and microbial life forms. RNA viruses and microbes are also arguably the most diverse and dynamic entities on Earth. Despite their evident importance, there are major limitations in our knowledge of the diversity, ecology, and evolution of RNA viruses and microbial communities. These gaps stem from a variety of factors, including biased sampling and the difficulty in accurately identifying highly divergent sequences through sequence similarity-based analyses alone. The implementation of meta-transcriptomic sequencing has greatly contributed to narrowing this gap. In particular, the rapid increase in the number of newly described RNA viruses over the last decade provides a glimpse of the remarkable diversity within the RNA virosphere. The central goal in this thesis was to determine the diversity of RNA viruses associated with wildlife, particularly in an Australian context. To this end I exploited cutting-edge meta-transcriptomic and bioinformatic approaches to reveal the RNA virus diversity within diverse animal taxa, tissues, and environments, with a special focus on the highly divergent "dark matter" of the virome that has largely been refractory to sequence analysis. Similarly, I used these approaches to detect targeted common microbes circulating in vertebrate and invertebrate fauna. Another important goal was to assess the diversity of RNA viruses and microbes as a cornerstone within a new eco-evolutionary framework. By doing so, this thesis encompasses multiple disciplines including virus discovery, viral host-range distributions, microbial-virus and host–parasite interactions, phylogenetic analysis, and pathogen surveillance. In sum, the research presented in this thesis expands the known RNA virosphere as well as the detection and surveillance of targeted microbes in wildlife, providing new insights into the diversity, evolution, and ecology of these agents in nature

    This Deliverable is the result of a joint effort by experts, working in the fields of risks management, accident analysis, learning from experience and safety management. They come from 10 countries mainly from Europe and also from USA and Australia. Their expertise covers several industrial sectors. They attempted to provide useful information, both from a theoretical and a practical point of views, about "Foresight in Safety". Safety is still an ongoing issue for which a number of subjects remain under debate (e.g. is goal of safety to ensure that 'as few things as possible go wrong' or to ensure that ‘as many things as possible go right’?). Anyway, we can assume that safety is to act in a way for both the process continues to be run right and that errors and failures to not lead to a major accident. Even if "foresight in safety" is the implicit underlying goal of every practitioner in safety, the outlines of its domain remain blurred and the relevant topics associated with it have never been clearly defined.     Novel Research in Sexuality and Mental Health

    Sexuality is considered as a great human value related to happiness and satisfaction, but unfortunately, when affecting mental disorders, they tend to be associated with second level human functions. Nevertheless, sexual dysfunction often accompanies psychiatric disorder, intensely influencing compliance, quality of life and human relationships. Sexuality could be influenced either by a mental disorder itself, difficulties to get and maintain couple relationships or by the use of psychotropic treatments. Treatment-related adverse events are unfortunately under-recognized by clinicians, scarcely spontaneously communicated by patients, and rarely investigated in clinical trials. The most frequent psychotropic compounds that could deteriorate sexuality and quality of life include antidepressants, antipsychotics and mood regulators. There are important differences between them related to some variations in mechanisms of action including serotonin, dopamine and prolactin levels. Little is known about the relevance of sexuality and its dysfunctions in chronic and frequent mental and neurological disorders, such as psychosis, mood disorders, anxiety, phobias, eating disorders, alcohol or drug dependencies, epilepsy and childhood pathology. Poor sexual life, low satisfaction and more frequent risky sex behavior than in the general population are associated with severe mental diseases. There is a need for increasing research in this field, including epidemiological, psychological, neurophysiological, neuroanatomical and genetic variables related to sexual life to get a better understanding of the implicated mechanisms. To increase the sensibility of clinicians, the identification and management of sexual disturbances after the onset of any mental disorder should be highlighted. This would avoid unnecessary suffering and deterioration of quality of life

    Novel Biomarkers for Heart Disease

    Cardiac biomarkers such as troponins and natiuretic peptides have made a great impact on clinical decision making as well as improving our understanding of molecular mechanisms of different disease conditions. However, the biomarkers that are currently in use do not reflect all the multiple disease pathways that are involved in a broad spectrum of cardiac disease conditions ranging from acute coronary syndrome, to heart failure (and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, HFpEF), to pulmonary hypertension or arrhythmias.
