Competitive Gradient Descent
We introduce a new algorithm for the numerical computation of Nash equilibria
of competitive two-player games. Our method is a natural generalization of
gradient descent to the two-player setting where the update is given by the
Nash equilibrium of a regularized bilinear local approximation of the
underlying game. It avoids oscillatory and divergent behaviors seen in
alternating gradient descent. Using numerical experiments and rigorous
analysis, we provide a detailed comparison to methods based on \emph{optimism}
and \emph{consensus} and show that our method avoids making any unnecessary
changes to the gradient dynamics while achieving exponential (local)
convergence for (locally) convex-concave zero sum games. Convergence and
stability properties of our method are robust to strong interactions between
the players, without adapting the stepsize, which is not the case with previous
methods. In our numerical experiments on non-convex-concave problems, existing
methods are prone to divergence and instability due to their sensitivity to
interactions among the players, whereas we never observe divergence of our
algorithm. The ability to choose larger stepsizes furthermore allows our
algorithm to achieve faster convergence, as measured by the number of model
evaluations.Comment: Appeared in NeurIPS 2019. This version corrects an error in theorem

A Non-Monotone Conjugate Subgradient Type Method for Minimization of Convex Functions
We suggest a conjugate subgradient type method without any line-search for
minimization of convex non differentiable functions. Unlike the custom methods
of this class, it does not require monotone decrease of the goal function and
reduces the implementation cost of each iteration essentially. At the same
time, its step-size procedure takes into account behavior of the method along
the iteration points. Preliminary results of computational experiments confirm
efficiency of the proposed modification.Comment: 11 page

Tracking the gradients using the Hessian: A new look at variance reducing stochastic methods
Our goal is to improve variance reducing stochastic methods through better
control variates. We first propose a modification of SVRG which uses the
Hessian to track gradients over time, rather than to recondition, increasing
the correlation of the control variates and leading to faster theoretical
convergence close to the optimum. We then propose accurate and computationally
efficient approximations to the Hessian, both using a diagonal and a low-rank
matrix. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on a wide range
of problems.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, 1 tabl
Precoder design for space-time coded systems over correlated Rayleigh fading channels using convex optimization
A class of computationally efficient linear precoders for space-time block coded multiple-input multiple-output wireless systems is derived based on the minimization of the exact symbol error rate (SER) and its upper bound. Both correlations at the transmitter and receiver are assumed to be present, and only statistical channel state information in the form of the transmit and receive correlation matrices is assumed to be available at the transmitter. The convexity of the design based on SER minimization is established and exploited. The advantage of the developed technique is its low complexity. We also find various relationships of the proposed designs to the existing precoding techniques, and derive very simple closed-form precoders for special cases such as two or three receive antennas and constant receive correlation. The numerical simulations illustrate the excellent SER performance of the proposed precoders
