QoS routing in ad-hoc networks using GA and multi-objective optimization

    Get PDF
Much work has been done on routing in Ad-hoc networks, but the proposed routing solutions only deal with the best effort data traffic. Connections with Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, such as voice channels with delay and bandwidth constraints, are not supported. The QoS routing has been receiving increasingly intensive attention, but searching for the shortest path with many metrics is an NP-complete problem. For this reason, approximated solutions and heuristic algorithms should be developed for multi-path constraints QoS routing. Also, the routing methods should be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent. In this paper, we use Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and multi-objective optimization for QoS routing in Ad-hoc Networks. In order to reduce the search space of GA, we implemented a search space reduction algorithm, which reduces the search space for GAMAN (GA-based routing algorithm for Mobile Ad-hoc Networks) to find a new route. We evaluate the performance of GAMAN by computer simulations and show that GAMAN has better behaviour than GLBR (Genetic Load Balancing Routing).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Genetic algorithms with elitism-based immigrants for dynamic shortest path problem in mobile ad hoc networks

This article is posted here with permission from the IEEE - Copyright @ 2009 IEEEIn recent years, the static shortest path (SP) problem has been well addressed using intelligent optimization techniques, e.g., artificial neural networks (ANNs), genetic algorithms (GAs), particle swarm optimization (PSO), etc. However, with the advancement in wireless communications, more and more mobile wireless networks appear, e.g., mobile ad hoc network (MANET), wireless sensor network (WSN), etc. One of the most important characteristics in mobile wireless networks is the topology dynamics, that is, the network topology changes over time due to energy conservation or node mobility. Therefore, the SP problem turns out to be a dynamic optimization problem (DOP) in MANETs. In this paper, we propose to use elitism-based immigrants GA (EIGA) to solve the dynamic SP problem in MANETs. We consider MANETs as target systems because they represent new generation wireless networks. The experimental results show that the EIGA can quickly adapt to the environmental changes (i.e., the network topology change) and produce good solutions after each change. This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant EP/E060722/1

QFSRD: Orthogenesis Evolution based Genetic Algorithm for QoS Fitness Scope aware Route Discovery in Ad hoc Networks

    Get PDF
Here in this paper we devised a novel orthogenesis evolution based GA technique for QoS fitness scope aware routing in Mobile Ad hoc Networks. The past decade research towards route discovery strategies for mobile ad hoc networks is continuing with magnitude speed. However, the majority of the routing solutions devised in past are dealing only with the optimality of the data transmission. QoS aware hop level connections in a given rute are not supported with the desired frequency. Hence the QoS aware routing in mobile ad hoc networks is grabbing the attention of many researchers as this domain is on the hot edge of the current research

Joint QoS multicast routing and channel assignment in multiradio multichannel wireless mesh networks using intelligent computational methods

Copyright @ 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. In this paper, the quality of service multicast routing and channel assignment (QoS-MRCA) problem is investigated. It is proved to be a NP-hard problem. Previous work separates the multicast tree construction from the channel assignment. Therefore they bear severe drawback, that is, channel assignment cannot work well with the determined multicast tree. In this paper, we integrate them together and solve it by intelligent computational methods. First, we develop a unified framework which consists of the problem formulation, the solution representation, the fitness function, and the channel assignment algorithm. Then, we propose three separate algorithms based on three representative intelligent computational methods (i.e., genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and tabu search). These three algorithms aim to search minimum-interference multicast trees which also satisfy the end-to-end delay constraint and optimize the usage of the scarce radio network resource in wireless mesh networks. To achieve this goal, the optimization techniques based on state of the art genetic algorithm and the techniques to control the annealing process and the tabu search procedure are well developed separately. Simulation results show that the proposed three intelligent computational methods based multicast algorithms all achieve better performance in terms of both the total channel conflict and the tree cost than those comparative references. This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant EP/E060722/1

Joint multicast routing and channel assignment in multiradio multichannel wireless mesh networks using tabu search

Copyright @ 2009 IEEE Computer SocietyThis paper proposes a tabu search (TS) based optimization approach to search a minimum-interference multicast tree which satisfies the end-to-end delay constraint and optimizes the usage of the scarce radio network resource in wireless mesh networks. The path-oriented encoding method is adopted and each candidate solution is represented by a tree data structure (i.e., a set of paths). Since we expect the multicast trees on which the minimum-interference channel assignment can be produced, a fitness function that returns the total channel conflict is devised. The techniques for controlling the tabu search procedure are well developed. A simple yet effective channel assignment algorithm is proposed to reduce the channel conflict. Simulation results show that the proposed TS multicast algorithm can produce the multicast trees which have better performance in terms of both the total channel conflict and the tree cost than that of a well known multicast algorithm in wireless mesh networks. This work was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant EP/E060722/1
