Finnish consumers' expectations on developments and changes in payment habits. Survey in connection with the research project 'Finnish payment habits 2010'

    Get PDF
The Bank of Finland’s Finnish Payment Habits 2010 project predicts that Finnish payment habits will face substantial changes. The causes for these changes include: the standardisation and integration of European payment systems, development of payment services-related legislation and regulation at EU level, changes in payment services-related cost factors and pricing, and new opportunities offered by technological advances. The last few years have seen a surge in new payment instruments and services. Increasing reliance on information and communication technology is characteristic to the development of these payment instruments, the vast majority of which have however failed to entice consumers. To increase our understanding of changes in payment patterns, this report analyses consumer needs, tastes and payment habits as new payment systems are adopted. Research data was collected in September 2005 using a mail-survey covering the central payment methods and addressed to 2,000 randomly-sampled Finnish consumers. According to our findings, security and trustworthiness are the most important characteristics of any new payment instrument. Other essential characteristics are the ability to produce good transaction-related information, compatibility with shopping and payment habits, accessibility, ease of use, time and cost savings, as well as time and place independence. New payment instruments – electronic billing and paying for shopping by mobile phone – are not likely to supersede conventional payment methods by 2010 when judged by the aforementioned characteristics: Trust and cost factors do not separate consumers well-disposed towards electronic bills and mobile payments from those set against these payment methods. A relatively restricted group of differentiating factors was found. Ease of use is a common differentiating factor for both electronic bills and mobile payments adoption. Additionally, accessibility is a differentiating characteristic in mobile payments adoption.payment habits; payment services to consumers; consumer behaviour; diffusion of innovations; theory of planned behaviour (TPB)

Predictors of seniors’ interest in assistive applications on smartphones:Evidence from a population-based survey in Slovenia

Assistive applications (apps) on smartphones could contribute to a better quality of life for seniors living independently at home. At present, there is a lack of empirical evidence of seniors’ acceptance of such apps. The Cycle of Technology Acquirement by Independent-Living Seniors (C-TAILS) model was recently proposed for studying the interplay between acceptance factors by integrating the personal, social and technological domains of seniors’ daily lives. This study aimed to explore how four groups of factors, clustered in accordance with the C-TAILS model, predict seniors’ interest in assistive apps, on a representative sample of the Slovenian population aged 55 years or older. The 617 respondents, who were contacted though a telephone survey, answered a questionnaire about their interest in three groups of assistive apps and four groups of potentially associated acceptance factors. Three linear regression models were used to analyse the association between the factors and the seniors’ interest in the three types of assistive apps. Smartphone-related dispositional traits were the strongest predictors across all three models. Among mobile phone usage patterns, smartphone use and the breadth of mobile phone features used were significant factors, while the significance of seniors’ personal characteristics and socio-economic conditions varied across the models. Hence, awareness that these factors play different roles in the acceptance of different assistive apps is needed in order to design viable interventions for their acceptance among seniors

    Get PDF
Addressing age-specific issues related to IT usage is becoming increasingly significant. To consolidate the existing knowledge on the usage of mobile apps amongst older adults, this study synthesizes the research nature, patterns, and theoretical foundations in existing studies through a systematic literature review. Based on our investigation into the 22 identified articles, we find that previous studies on this topic focus mainly on app usage behaviors, app development and evaluation, and app usage learning and training. Prior studies are still fragmented and a more comprehensive and integrated framework is required to guide future research. Finally, we discuss the key antecedents of older adults’ app usage identified in reviewed articles and highlight seven heuristic topics with corresponding research questions for future research. Limitations of this review are also discussed

The main objective of this study is to provide detailed analysis on the research conducted in the area of adoption for assistive technologies in aged care. The article analyses the studies and concludes with avenues, guidelines and gaps for research in this area. This study has conducted a systematic search on eight popular academic databases and identified relevant papers published. The paper identifies potential technologies that have been utilised to address seniors’ daily life difficulties in three areas: independent living, social isolation, dementia and medication taking. The article presents the theoretical lenses used for studying the adoption of these technologies in aged care. In addition to that, the systematic review has come up with interesting demographics on research approaches, and fields of publication for the research in this area. The paper outlines that the Australian research in adoption of assistive technologies for aged care has been over focused on healthcare domain and has largely ignored information system outlets. The possible reasons and potential directions for this issue have been discussed

Published Conference ProceedingsThe advancement on Information and Communication Technology and the Internet for educational purposes has been a staple discourse among researchers in recent years. However, preliminary investigations indicate that e-learning systems are underutilized due to the fact that some of their major features remaining inactive; features like electronic discussion forums. Despite several scholars reporting on high levels of e-learning systems implementation at Universities of Technology (UoT), it is disconcerting that discussion forums within these platforms remain poorly utilized. The purpose of this study is to establish constructs that may promote adoption and use of discussion forums. The Technology Acceptance Model forms the theoretical framework for this study and is extended by including digital inclusion, perceived attention and perceived enjoyment. Thirty participants were purposively selected from a third year Information Technology class and interviewed with regards to the different constructs which make up the Technology Acceptance Model. Findings of this case study suggest that, perceived usefulness and ease along with digital inclusion may positively influence adoption and use of discussion forums at UoT. The study contributes to the board of knowledge by providing useful insights into the application of the Technology Acceptance Model by establishing additional constructs that may promote discussion forum usage

BACKGROUND: The increasing health service demand driven by the aging of the global population calls for the development of modes of health service delivery that are less human resource-intensive. Electronic health (eHealth) and medical apps are expected to play an important role in this development. Although evidence shows mobile medical apps might be effective in improving the care, self-management, self-efficacy, health-related behavior, and medication adherence of older adults, little is known about older adults' intention to use these technologies when needed, or the factors influencing this intention. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship of technology acceptance factors and intention to use mobile medical apps among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: Data was collected using questionnaires. The factors selected from the literature have been validated using Cronbach α and tested for significance using logistic regressions. RESULTS: Almost half (49.7%) of the included older adults reported no intention to use medical apps. Adjusted logistic regression analysis per factor showed that the factors Attitude toward use (odds ratio [OR] 8.50), Perceived usefulness (OR 5.25), Perceived ease of use (OR 4.22), Service availability (OR 3.46), Sense of control (OR 3.40), Self-perceived effectiveness (OR 2.69), Facilities (OR 2.45), Personal innovativeness (OR 2.08), Social relationships (OR 1.79), Subjective norm (OR 1.48), and Feelings of anxiety (OR 0.62) significantly influenced the intention to use mobile medical apps among older adults, whereas the factor Finance (OR 0.98) did not. When considered together, a controlled multivariate logistic regression yielded high explained variances of 0.542 (Cox-Snell R2) and 0.728 (Nagelkerke R2). CONCLUSIONS: The high odds ratios and explained variance indicate that the factors associated with the intention to use medical apps are largely understood and the most important factors have been identified. To advance the evidence base, experimental controlled research should investigate the causality between the factors, intention to use, and actual use. For this purpose, our evidence suggests that policies designed to improve Attitude toward use appear most effective, followed by policies addressing Perceived usefulness, Perceived ease of use, Service availability, and Sense of control

Towards the implementation of a fully-fledged electronic service for citizens: the case for local government in South Africa

    Get PDF
The current literature on e-government implementation in South Africa informs this research that there is no framework to guide the implementation of e-government for local municipalities. The public sector does not adopt models that are designed and developed for their context. SA as a developing nation still battles with the implementation of e-government for local government. The research findings in this research depict that the implementation of electronic services is complicated, stagnant, and incoherent due to various factors that hinder its swift implementation. The research commenced its pursuit to identify the factors that hinder the implementation of e-government through conducting four areas of investigations, firstly, the study investigated 205 existing municipal electronic portals to establish the extent to which eportal offers the relevant e-services to the citizens; secondly, the study conducted a research survey and a sample of 579 citizens gave their perspective about e-government services that they receive from local municipalities; thirdly, the study also evaluated the City of Cape Town electronic services to ascertain its adoption; and finally, the study conducted in-depth interviews with 35 e-government experts to understand the factors that hinder the implementation of e-government in SA. The study selected three social theoretical approaches, namely structuration, activity, and agency theories to address the different contexts of the research. Structuration theory has aided the research to ask critical questions about the social structures in local government that affect implementation. The activity theory was used to provide some guidelines to investigate how e-government activities are implemented within the identified social structure. Finally, the agency theory was used to develop a model to guide the implementation of a successful egovernment model by employing a deductive approach.
