A Cross-layer Perspective on Energy Harvesting Aided Green Communications over Fading Channels
We consider the power allocation of the physical layer and the buffer delay
of the upper application layer in energy harvesting green networks. The total
power required for reliable transmission includes the transmission power and
the circuit power. The harvested power (which is stored in a battery) and the
grid power constitute the power resource. The uncertainty of data generated
from the upper layer, the intermittence of the harvested energy, and the
variation of the fading channel are taken into account and described as
independent Markov processes. In each transmission, the transmitter decides the
transmission rate as well as the allocated power from the battery, and the rest
of the required power will be supplied by the power grid. The objective is to
find an allocation sequence of transmission rate and battery power to minimize
the long-term average buffer delay under the average grid power constraint. A
stochastic optimization problem is formulated accordingly to find such
transmission rate and battery power sequence. Furthermore, the optimization
problem is reformulated as a constrained MDP problem whose policy is a
two-dimensional vector with the transmission rate and the power allocation of
the battery as its elements. We prove that the optimal policy of the
constrained MDP can be obtained by solving the unconstrained MDP. Then we focus
on the analysis of the unconstrained average-cost MDP. The structural
properties of the average optimal policy are derived. Moreover, we discuss the
relations between elements of the two-dimensional policy. Next, based on the
theoretical analysis, the algorithm to find the constrained optimal policy is
presented for the finite state space scenario. In addition, heuristic policies
with low-complexity are given for the general state space. Finally, simulations
are performed under these policies to demonstrate the effectiveness
Secure Beamforming For MIMO Broadcasting With Wireless Information And Power Transfer
This paper considers a basic MIMO information-energy (I-E) broadcast system,
where a multi-antenna transmitter transmits information and energy
simultaneously to a multi-antenna information receiver and a dual-functional
multi-antenna energy receiver which is also capable of decoding information.
Due to the open nature of wireless medium and the dual purpose of information
and energy transmission, secure information transmission while ensuring
efficient energy harvesting is a critical issue for such a broadcast system.
Assuming that physical layer security techniques are applied to the system to
ensure secure transmission from the transmitter to the information receiver, we
study beamforming design to maximize the achievable secrecy rate subject to a
total power constraint and an energy harvesting constraint. First, based on
semidefinite relaxation, we propose global optimal solutions to the secrecy
rate maximization (SRM) problem in the single-stream case and a specific
full-stream case where the difference of Gram matrices of the channel matrices
is positive semidefinite. Then, we propose a simple iterative algorithm named
inexact block coordinate descent (IBCD) algorithm to tackle the SRM problem of
general case with arbitrary number of streams. We proves that the IBCD
algorithm can monotonically converge to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) solution to
the SRM problem. Furthermore, we extend the IBCD algorithm to the joint
beamforming and artificial noise design problem. Finally, simulations are
performed to validate the performance of the proposed beamforming algorithms.Comment: Submitted to journal for possible publication. First submission to

Interference-Assisted Wireless Energy Harvesting in Cognitive Relay Network with Multiple Primary Transceivers
We consider a spectrum sharing scenario, where a secondary network coexists
with a primary network of multiple transceivers. The secondary network consists
of an energy-constrained decode-and-forward secondary relay which assists the
communication between a secondary transmitter and a destination in the presence
of the interference from multiple primary transmitters. The secondary relay
harvests energy from the received radio-frequency signals, which include the
information signal from the secondary transmitter and the primary interference.
The harvested energy is then used to decode the secondary information and
forward it to the secondary destination. At the relay, we adopt a time
switching policy due to its simplicity that switches between the energy
harvesting and information decoding over time. Specifically, we derive a
closed-form expression for the secondary outage probability under the primary
outage constraint and the peak power constraint at both secondary transmitter
and relay. In addition, we investigate the effect of the number of primary
transceivers on the optimal energy harvesting duration that minimizes the
secondary outage probability. By utilizing the primary interference as a useful
energy source in the energy harvesting phase, the secondary network achieves a
better outage performance.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, To be presented at IEEE GLOBECOM 201
