    Flexible Global Software Development (GSD): Antecedents of Success in Requirements Analysis

    Globalization of software development has resulted in a rapid shift away from the traditional collocated, on-site development model, to the offshoring model. Emerging trends indicate an increasing interest in offshoring even in early phases like requirements analysis. Additionally, the flexibility offered by the agile development approach makes it attractive for adaptation in globally distributed software work. A question of significance then is what impacts the success of offshoring earlier phases, like requirements analysis, in a flexible and globally distributed environment? This article incorporates the stance of control theory to posit a research model that examines antecedent factors such as requirements change, facilitation by vendor and client site-coordinators, control, and computer-mediated communication. The impact of these factors on success of requirements analysis projects in a “flexible” global setting is tested using two quasi-experiments involving students from Management Development Institute, India and Marquette University, USA. Results indicate that formal modes of control significantly influence project success during requirements analysis. Further, facilitation by both client and vendor site coordinators positively impacts requirements analysis success

    NANO-VESICLES OF SALBUTAMOL SULPHATE IN METERED DOSE INHALERS: FORMULATION, CHARACTERIZATION AND IN VITRO EVALUATION

    Objective: The present work was aimed to prepare niosomes entrapping salbutamol sulphate (SS) using reversed phase evaporation method (REV).Methods: Niosomes were prepared by mixing span 60 and cholesterol in 1:1 molar ratio in chloroform, SS in water was then added to organic phase to form niosomal SS. Formulations after evaporation of chloroform, freeze centrifuged then lyophilized, were evaluated for particles size, polydispersity index (Pdi), zeta-potential, morphology, entrapment efficiency (EE%) and in vitro release. For pulmonary delivery; metered dose inhalers (MDI) were prepared by suspending SS niosomes equivalent to 20 mg SS in hydrofluoroalkane (HFA). The metered valve was investigated for leakage rate, the total number of puffs/canister, weight/puff, dose uniformity and particle size.Results: The results showed spherical niosomes with 400-451 nm particles that entrapped 66.19% of SS. 76.54±0.132% SS release from niosomes that showed a controlled release profile for 8h. The leakage test was not exceeding 4 mg/3 d, the number of puffs were up to 200puffs/canister, the dose delivered/puff was 0.1 mg and 0.64-4.51μm niosomal aerosol.Conclusion: The results indicate an encouraging strategy to formulate a controlled drug delivery by entrapping (SS) in niosomes which could be packaged into (MDI) that met the requirements of (USP) aerosols guidelines which offering a novel approach to respiratory delivery

    Resource Allocation Management for Broadcast/Multicast Services

Broadcast and multicast service is the most efficient mechanism to deliver the same content to many users. Not only focusing on venue casting, but also distributing many other media such as software updates and breaking news, 5G broadcasting is a key driver to achieve the spectral efficiency needed for the 1,000 times traffic growth that is expected for the upcoming years. Improvements in some areas, such as resource allocation techniques for broadcast/multicast services, are needed. The utilization of the Conventional Multicast Scheme (CMS) approach for multicast resource allocation presents intrinsic inefficiencies, because of the different channel conditions of the users which demand the service. This paper presents some resource allocation strategies based on the use of multicast subgroups. We propose a multicast resource allocation algorithm including memory, which results in improvements of the service throughput at the time a high fairness among the users is guaranteed. In addition, an algorithm of joint resource allocation among multicast and unicast transmissions is developed.     Cities drifting apart: Heterogeneous outcomes of decentralizing public education [WP]

    Looking at the decentralized provision of public education in a middle income country, this paper estimates the impact of local autonomy on service quality, finding large heterogeneity in the effect across different levels of local development. Colombian municipalities were assigned to administer their public education serviceautonomously solely on the basis of whether they exceeded the 100 thousand inhabitants threshold. Exploiting this discontinuity, I estimate the impact that autonomy has had on student test scores across municipalities, using a regression discontinuity design and fixed-effects regression on a discontinuity sample. I find a test score gap arising between autonomous municipalities in the top quartile and those in the bottom quartile of the development range, in a trend that reinforces over time. From analysis of detailed municipal balance sheet data, I show that the autonomous high-developed municipalities invest in education more than the ad hoc transfers they receive, supplementing these with own financial resources. Indicators of municipal administration quality also show significant differences between the two groups of cities, helping to explain the education outcome patterns

    SULFATED DEHYDROPOLYMER OF CAFFEIC ACID FOR REPAIR OF LUNG DAMAGE AND EMPHYSEMA

    The complex pathobiologic mechanisms of emphysema are not fully understood, leaving this deadly disease without effective pharmacotherapy for a cure. This project hypothesized that the sulfated dehydropolymer of caffeic acid (CDSO3) exhibits Fe2+ chelation-based hypoxia inducible factor-1a (HIF-1a) up-regulatory protective activities against in vitro emphysematous cell death and for in vivo reversal of emphysema induced with SU5416, a vascular endothelial growth factor blocker. Using in vitro chromogenic competitive inhibition assays, CDSO3 was shown to chelate Fe2+ (IC50 of 23 µM), but not Fe3+ ions. The trypan blue exclusion and lactate dehydrogenase assays were then employed to examine the cytoprotective activities of CDSO3 against inflammatory, oxidative, elastolytic, and apoptotic cell death using alveolar macrophages, epithelial and endothelial cells. CDSO3 at 10 µM produced significant protective activities against these emphysematous cell deaths by 50-154 %. These protective effects were opposed by the addition of the HIF-1a inhibitors, CAY10585 and echinomycin, and excess Fe2+, but not Fe3+, ions. Emphysema was then induced in rats following a subcutaneous injection of SU5416 at 20 mg/kg, after which CDSO3 at 60 µg/kg was administered to the lungs 3 times/week for two weeks. Treadmill exercise endurance (EE) was measured to assess the functional impairment, while lung tissues were removed for morphological assessments of alveolar airspace enlargement (MLI) and destruction (DI), as well as to measure protein levels using Western blot. SU5416 significantly impaired EE, MLI, and DI by 81 %, 47 %, and 5-fold, compared to the healthy animals, and these were significantly reversed by CDSO3 by 66, 74, and 87 %. CDSO3 treatment did not change the lung cytoplasmic expression of histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2), HIF-1a, or a pro-apoptotic marker, BAX. However, induction with SU5416 significantly reduced VEGF expression by 52 % and increased cleaved caspase-3 expression by 1.5-fold, compared to the healthy animals, while CDSO3 normalized the expressions of both proteins in these emphysematous animals. However, when CDSO3 was pre-mixed with excess Fe2+, the reversal activities of CDSO3 were diminished. In conclusion, this study has demonstrated the Fe2+ chelation-based HIF-1a up-regulatory dependent in vitro and in vivo lung repairing efficacies for CDSO3 in emphysema

    Clinical evaluation of a novel adaptive bolus calculator and safety system in Type 1 diabetes

    Bolus calculators are considered state-of-the-art for insulin dosing decision support for people with Type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, they all lack the ability to automatically adapt in real-time to respond to an individual’s needs or changes in insulin sensitivity. A novel insulin recommender system based on artificial intelligence has been developed to provide personalised bolus advice, namely the Patient Empowerment through Predictive Personalised Decision Support (PEPPER) system. Besides adaptive bolus advice, the decision support system is coupled with a safety system which includes alarms, predictive glucose alerts, predictive low glucose suspend for insulin pump users, personalised carbohydrate recommendations and dynamic bolus insulin constraint. This thesis outlines the clinical evaluation of the PEPPER system in adults with T1D on multiple daily injections (MDI) and insulin pump therapy. The hypothesis was that the PEPPER system is safe, feasible and effective for use in people with TID using MDI or pump therapy. Safety and feasibility of the safety system was initially evaluated in the first phase, with the second phase evaluating feasibility of the complete system (safety system and adaptive bolus advisor). Finally, the whole system was clinically evaluated in a randomised crossover trial with 58 participants. No significant differences were observed for percentage times in range between the PEPPER and Control groups. For quality of life, participants reported higher perceived hypoglycaemia with the PEPPER system despite no objective difference in time spent in hypoglycaemia. Overall, the studies demonstrated that the PEPPER system is safe and feasible for use when compared to conventional therapy (continuous glucose monitoring and standard bolus calculator).     Linking an integrated framework with appropriate methods for measuring QoE

    Quality of Experience (QoE) has recently gained recognition for being an important determinant of the success of new technologies. Despite the growing interest in QoE, research into this area is still fragmented. Similar - but separate - efforts are being carried out in technical as well as user oriented research domains, which are rarely communicating with each other. In this paper, we take a multidisciplinary approach and review both user oriented and technical definitions on Quality of Experience (including the related concept of User Experience). We propose a detailed and comprehensive framework that integrates both perspectives. Finally, we take a first step at linking methods for measuring QoE with this framework
