Enabling GPU Support for the COMPSs-Mobile Framework
Using the GPUs embedded in mobile devices allows for increasing the performance of the applications running on them while reducing the energy consumption of their execution. This article presents a task-based solution for adaptative, collaborative heterogeneous computing on mobile cloud environments. To implement our proposal, we extend the COMPSs-Mobile framework – an implementation of the COMPSs programming model for building mobile applications that offload part of the computation to the Cloud – to support offloading computation to GPUs through OpenCL. Parallel and Distributed Simulation from Many Cores to the Public Cloud (Extended Version)
In this tutorial paper, we will firstly review some basic simulation concepts
and then introduce the parallel and distributed simulation techniques in view
of some new challenges of today and tomorrow. More in particular, in the last
years there has been a wide diffusion of many cores architectures and we can
expect this trend to continue. On the other hand, the success of cloud
computing is strongly promoting the everything as a service paradigm. Is
parallel and distributed simulation ready for these new challenges? The current
approaches present many limitations in terms of usability and adaptivity: there
is a strong need for new evaluation metrics and for revising the currently
implemented mechanisms. In the last part of the paper, we propose a new
approach based on multi-agent systems for the simulation of complex systems. It
is possible to implement advanced techniques such as the migration of simulated
entities in order to build mechanisms that are both adaptive and very easy to
use. Adaptive mechanisms are able to significantly reduce the communication
cost in the parallel/distributed architectures, to implement load-balance
techniques and to cope with execution environments that are both variable and
dynamic. Finally, such mechanisms will be used to build simulations on top of

Middleware Design Framework for Mobile Computing
Mobile computing is one of the recent growing fields in the area of wireless networking. The recent standardization efforts accomplished in Web services, with their XML-based formats for registration/discovery, service description, and service access, respectively UDDI, WSDL, and SOAP, certainly represent an interesting first step towards open service composition, which MA supports for mobile computing are expected to integrate within their frameworks soon. A middle-ware that can work even if the network parameters are changed can be a better solution for successful mobile computing. A middle-ware is proposed for handling the entire existing problem in distributed environment. Middleware is about integration and interoperability of applications and services running on heterogeneous computing and communication devices. The services it provides - including identification, authentication, authorization, soft-switching, certification and security - are used in a vast range of global appliances and systems, from smart cards and wireless devices to mobile services and e-Commerce

Modelling network memory servers with parallel processors, break-downs and repairs.
This paper presents an analytical method for the performability evaluation of a previously reported network memory server attached to a local area network. To increase the performance and availability of the proposed system, an additional server is added to the system. Such systems are prone to failures. With this in mind, a mathematical model has been developed to analyse the performability of the proposed system with break-downs and repairs. Mean queue lengths and the probability of job losses for the LAN feeding the network memory server is calculated and presented
A general purpose programming framework for ubiquitous computing environments
It is important to note that the need to support ad-hoc and potentially mobile arrangements of devices in ubiquitous environments does not fit well within the traditional client/server architecture. We believe peer-to-peer communication offers a preferable alternative due to its decentralised nature, removing dependence on individual nodes. However, this choice adds to the complexity of the developers task. In this paper, we describe a two-tiered approach to address this problem: A lower tier employing peer-to-peer interactions for managing the network infrastructure and an upper tier providing a mobile agent based programming framework. The result is a general purpose framework for developing ubiquitous applications and services, where the underlying complexity is hidden from the developer. This paper discusses our on-going work; presenting our design decisions, features supported by our framework, and some of the challenges still to be addressed in a complex programming environment
